Terrible car stuff is getting a cheap or "free" car from a friend/roomie/family member that proceeds to burn several holes in your wallet. Smash bro made the right choice.Invalido posted:I dunno. While suboptimal, at least there's a child seat, presumably with belts to restrain the child. This alone is well above and beyond what is common in most of the world when it comes to child traffic safety. A few years ago I vacationed in SE Asia with my family. Due to bad planning I had failed to bring booster seats for my kids (3 and 5 at the time) from home. When I asked the car rental agency people if they could provide such things they looked at me like I was crazy. Seats could not be bought so I ended up building some out things I could buy, including plastic laundry baskets, rope, zip ties and lots of duct tape. Much fun was had at the hardware store where nobody spoke any English. The best I could do was probably better than nothing was my reasoning. Given how some folks in SE Asia and elsewhere consider it NBD to put a family of five on a 50cc scooter, the idea of a booster seat might seem a bit absurd.

In what other transaction can you buy something used and expect it to not be as-is? I don't understand where people get these ideas. I tend to not sell stuff to friends, especially cars, because even at the best, they'll ask about it when something breaks. I can tell a stranger to gently caress off with no harm done.

I feel that too, but I also kind of feel like if I saw them driving around town in the back of my mind I'd be like that's my car. Like what if they put a dent in it, or put fake chrome hubcaps on it or some other poo poo I don't like I'd still feel like they were defacing MY CAR. I once sold a very, very clean 1991 Camaro RS, 305 V8 with a manual transmission, to a guy who's plan was to basically hack it up and take poo poo out of it to put in another project Camaro he was working on. He had a similar aged Z28 I think but it was an automatic and had some lovely panels on it so he wanted mine as donor and I really didn't want to sell it to him because it was just so rust free and couldn't think of it rotting and being cannibalized it some guys yard. Like I know that '91 Camaro with a 305 and about 170hp is not exactly desirable but to sell it to somebody who's solution was not to put a better motor in that car but to take everything but the motor and put it on another car was annoying to me. I'm by no means like a Camaro purist or superfan or anything, I actually have no brand allegiance what so ever, so I don't know why that bothered me so much but it did.

I sold my 1-ton Kingswood ute to a friend of mine's older brother, decent dude, had his poo poo together, I knew he would take care of it, and he did, pretty well. Then he got rear-ended by a 4.5 ton rental truck when that driver was checking their big Melways street directory and didn't realise my mate's brother had stopped for a pedestrian crossing. Completely totaled, chassis cracked in several places, diff housing smashed open, etc. He sold the 350 chev engine to another friend to use in a speed boat, but it was hard to see something I had spent a long time and a lot of money crunched like that.

My father had a 76 Monte Carlo, silver with a burgundy Landau top and matching interior. Put a 454 bored .040 with an aluminum intake and dual 4 barrels in it. Sold it and had this guy come to buy it for his daughter who just got her license. My Dad begged this guy not to buy it, tried to explain why it was such a bad idea. Bought it anyway and came back mad when she totaled it in less than a month.

I sold my rust free and completely fixed-everything Forester to my friends brother and he money shifted it and jumped the timing belt like less than a month later. I had just got done dropping the entire rear subframe and everything to rebush, paint and swap an LSD into it like a few weeks before. It had the altimeter/compass on the dash too. I really regret selling that car even though they made me an offer I couldn't refuse, seriously.

I sold my beloved but clapped out VR6 Passat wagon to a guy who pulled up in another VR6 Passat wagon. I'd owned the car for 10 years, and this instance made the 2nd time I'd seen another one on the road. I had it listed for a few bills above scrap value to keep the vultures away, but honestly would have just given it to him knowing at the very least, some of the good bits (motor and trans ran STRONG, still some good body panels & OK interior) would find their way back onto the road.

Sold my Fit to a guy on Nextdoor who needed a car for his daughter who just got her license. Great first car choice, upgraded with wireless carplay even. It was really tough selling it after 11 years, but I still wanted to upgrade while it was in great shape. Coworker saw it a week later, driven by a young woman with her friends getting drinks at a 7-11. Seems likely it will become someone else’s fond memory as well. Roll on tiny Honda. And for some actual content, this exhaust pipe: A bit hard to see since I’m lined up with it, but the thing juts out from behind at like a 45 degree angle.

The only reason to get an N47 is the 123D and then you just set 2000€ aside for the inevitable timing chain dilemma. The M47 was the best 4 cylinder common rail diesel ever made in germany (bar, maybe, the mercedes 220) The M57 was the absolute best 6 cylinder diesel to ever grace the earth. Their Nxx successors were nightmares. look at this. Duplex Chains, easy cams, Vacuum EGR that can be defeated with a screw or some hot glue. Literally all you ever need is to remove the swirl flaps (20€ ebay plugs) and change oil and filters and deactivate the EGR if you wanna drive the thing for over a million miles. Even the cranc case ventilation can be easily serviced. show me a german car that can do that today. Combat Theory fucked around with this message at 16:32 on Jan 8, 2021 |

I sold my '95 2-door Cherokee to a friend when I picked up the Crown Vic, who unfortunately attracts idiots on the road. The poor thing got merged into, and rear-ended twice, and then he neglected to replace the coolant temp sensor when it failed, so was unaware that he had blown a rad hose and lost all his coolant until the poor little 2.5 gave up. It still runs after cooling down, but seems to have lost a cylinder. He still has it, but currently doesn't have a job, so it sits. Even if he fixed it, the rear of the chassis is bent pretty bad from the last rear-ender.

CAT INTERCEPTOR posted:If you have pieces of poo poo like you describe running about, you dont have safety inspections. I dotn know what they should be called but they aint safety inspections. Yeah they basically drive it through the parking lot, hit the brakes, check the lights, check the horn, and check how much tread you have left on your tires. Also make sure there's seat belts of some kind, and wipers. That's it. The safety part takes all of 5 minutes if they have a helper to watch the lights, otherwise they pull into a garage with mirrors on the corners. Only the newbies or someone busted for passing someone for cash bothers to check to see if there's a catalytic converter or bother measuring all 4 tires, unless the car is obviously modified. In over 20 years of driving I've only had them look under the car twice to make sure there was a cat. They don't care how many warning lights you have on (airbag light could even be on) so long as it's not a check engine light. But this is what it takes to get some people to finally put new tires on their cars. Or replace the metal backing plates that had brake pads attached at one point. If you live in a smog county (which is only the major metro areas - except for San Antonio, no smog there), it takes longer for them to smog it. And smog here at this point is literally make sure the CEL works, plug in their computer, and wait. Computer just checks to make sure there's no codes stored and that all of the readiness monitors are set (you're allowed 1 not ready - it used to be 2 for 96-99, now it's 1 across all years). Anything 25+ yrs old is smog exempt, so there's absolutely no tailpipe sniff here anymore. We all know it's impossible to tune out catalytic converter codes..... Just too much risk of guilt of something going wrong with the car despite no intentional malice or deception. At least when you sell it to a stranger it is out of sight out of mind. I've never sold a running/driving car private party before. I did sell a wrecked car for $200 one time to a guy that needed an engine (it ran fantastic, even with >200k on it), everything else has gone to scrapyards. I've traded two cars that needed a bunch of work in to dealerships (99 Altima and 06 Saturn - Altima had a badly rattling timing chain and dying AC compressor, Saturn was a rust heap). On the Saturn, since it was a mom and pop lot and they actually gave me an okay deal on Brokeback, I was up front about what it needed, and loaded up the trunk with the parts waiting to go on. They were giving me a little more than scrap value despite it barely running and spraying gas from (as it turned out) 3 different holes in the main fuel line. randomidiot fucked around with this message at 20:13 on Jan 8, 2021 |

I did this to one of my lower control arm bolts. Hit the brake caliper. I managed to put it in backwards on previous assembly when servicing my struts. The entire arm was drooping past it's normal travel because I had removed the shock which gave me enough clearance to absent mindedly install the bolt in backwards without touching the caliper.Wasabi the J posted:Can the bolt go in the other way?
