Nah she'd just drop the R, add an I, and caucus with the Democrats. She could flip parties, there's no rule against it though.

Chuck should give her a plum committee assignment with seniority and throw money Alaska's way and make a de facto 51-49 Senate. No need for weird power-sharing agreements and a permapresent VP like in a 50-50 senate. I've never had much of a problem with Murkowski.

It happened back in 2009, Senator Arlen Specter of Pennsylvania switched from Republican to Democratic in April which was the second-to-last step in giving the Dems a supermajority (The last being Franken finally getting seated).

We elect individuals, not parties. Those individuals are free to caucus with whoever they desire at any time. The main incentive for association is money and support for reelection.

From what I've seen about her, she's about as conservative as Joe Manchin, and has stood up to Trump several times during his presidency. She's pretty centrist, and could easily be a member of both parties.
