Can't miss out on Rhapsody's official video too. (Might be NSFW as the version I have on DVD has boobs, but this might be a censored version for YouTube)

Yes.
Rhapsody is the loving worst.

I can't even really explain what it is about them that makes me detest them so much, eventhough I might otherwise enjoy some cheesy fantasy nonsense. Fabio Lione ticks me the gently caress off, but he's not the whole reason. IDK, they're just a bunch of poncy fucks who don't have a loving clue. gently caress Rhapsody and all its permutations.

There's a fine line between "self aware" and "to committed to the bit" and I feel like a lot of power metal acts are WAYYYY too committed to the bit.

It's so funny that when Lost Horizon came out with A Flame to the Ground Beneath, music journos described them as Europower without the cheese. They are easily one of the cheesiest bands ever.

some power metal is cool but the vocals are hideously bad and corny. any power metal (or adjacent) with cool and good guttural vox?

Ensiferum and Wintersun sound right up your alley. It can go guttural at times but is more growly than most power metal. Wintersun's s/t is one of my guilty pleasures as it's just so good.

I liked Iced Earth okay, but it never made it into my usual rotation because when I listened to it I just wished I was listening to Blind Guardian, so I turned that on instead. Demons & Wizards is better, mostly because of Hansi's voice, and the first three tracks on III (coincidentally) kind of slap. Good riddance to that poo poo though. If you were curious like I was what Blind Guardian's response was:

quote:

On the occasion of the assault upon the United States Capitol

We are deeply shocked and our thoughts are with the relatives of the deceased. We expressly distance ourselves from any kind of violence irrespective if applied against institutions or persons. The incidents will be thoroughly investigated and the responsibles will be brought to justice. We ask for your understanding that in view of the hourly news situation we will not make any further comments at present.

So obviously as vague a statement as possible, though the "relatives of the deceased" part sucks because all the deceased were brain-poisoned conspiracy theorists as far as I'm aware. I can't find anything about Hansi's political beliefs even if I go as far as I'm willing to search (aka ~the second page of Google results~) and maybe that's for the best.

I stopped listening to Nightwish once Tarja left, but sometime this December while listening to metal Christmas song playlists this one came on and got stuck in my head. It is very dorky and I think it only wound up on the Christmas list because it mentions snowflakes and chimneys:

Oh yeah that one absolutely gets its hooks into you for sure. It’s weird, Annette was totally the wrong choice for the band because you can’t just replace an operatic soprano with a rock vocalist full of pep who simply couldn’t deal with the back catalog. But for some reason I just loved her, especially on the live stuff I saw and the stuff that was written for her range worked well.

Floor is far more the right choice for the band, but I’ve not really had much interest in the stuff they’ve done since she joined.

Granted it was written in the 80s but Battalions of Fear is very clearly anti-Reagan and anti-imperialist and there's a general leftist slant to the entire early German scene they hung out in, so take that for what it's worth.

I remember reading that they weren't looking for a female vocalist to replace Tarja, and thought they had a male vocalist for an album, but I think I misremembered the quote.

Oh yeah, also "Born in a Mourning Hall" is more recent, from 1995, and talks about how TV preachers/pundits and sympathy for the upper class is crushing the poor, so that's another in the "probably not a closeted Nazi" column.

I found this

quote:

METALLIAN: Is there a political or reality side to Blind Guardian? Is there a social side to you as a person, do you pay attention to the news and the politics?
HANSI: Yes certainly and I would say so for the other guys as well because we are really stuck in reality. We are facing it and it is also delivered in the music and the lyrics, but on a lower level. If you go back to A Night At The Opera, the song Wait For An Answer is certainly a political statement as well.

METALLIAN: Where do you stand politically and what is your view as far as Germany is concerned right now?
HANSI: I am what you would call a democrat with a strong social aspect. It is almost a green attitude I have, but it is not exactly green although I am on a more working class level.

METALLIAN: Do you mean to say the Green Party?
HANSI: I am certainly closely related to the Green Party but, to be honest, they have so many things which they politically try to achieve which are not worth achieving and they don't have a clue about a lot of things, which are not connected to the environment. I am really shocked by that, trying to save the Amazon by killing the European forest, for example, type of a thing.

METALLIAN: That makes no sense.
HANSI: But that's how they work. I have spoken to a lot of people and the more local it gets the worse it is. I mean, the biggest achievement of the Green Party here was they agreed to some activity which was completely against their philosophy and ideology but apart of that they have some really good aspects, so yes somewhere between the Greens, working class parties and the more liberal economy parties is where I stand.

METALLIAN: Like the Social Democrats?
HANSI: Yes, but there is no big difference between them and the Christian Democrats anymore. That makes it really difficult, but we have a liberal party here which is more supportive for the economy. So it's the minor parties which I am pretty much supporting.

METALLIAN: Are you referring to the free liberals?
HANSI: Yes them and the Greens, the two big parties are too much the same at the moment to be supported. When it came to elections a few years back I voted for the social party but that was more for the chancellor Gerhard Schröder because I think he was not exactly what you would consider a social democrat even though he was their leader, but I like a lot of the things he said and the way he thought.

METALLIAN: What is the name of that left leaning party you mentioned you support?
HANSI: Die Linke.
