What? No they’re not, they use the standard eurocentric layout with Europe in the centre and the Pacific on both edges. I’ve almost never seen a US (or canadian!) map of the world centred on the Americas.

That said, someone not phoneposting should post the US Marine Corps flag that prominently features an eagle mounting the globe

As an outfit made for foreign military adventures the globe makes more sense. Especially with only the Americas visible.

One thing that was crazy about the capitol attack was just how many drat flags there were. Barely any picket signs, a million flags (which they also used as weapons).

Which I think both speaks to a lot of things. There's how the protestors were kind of ideologically vapid without any clear messages or complex ideas they want to push beyond just their general allegiance, there's how conservatives for a long time now have co-opted generic americana to imply that only they are the true americans and their rivals are all false americans (that was a lot bigger during the W days), and there's the fact that there's a huge industry for flagmaking for these flag-happy idiots so they can do things like cross the Texas flag with the snake flag. For whatever reason, they really like flags as a medium.

Here's a good article analyzing some of their flags. https://qz.com/1953366/decoding-the-pro-trump-insurrectionist-flags-and-banners/

When I first saw that there were flags for the Trump campaign, something about it just deeply disgusted me about the concept. Not just because he's a horrible monster, but because it seems like a way of elevating the pissfuck above the nation, like in a place where you've put a flagpole, you're raising some fuckin' idiot's personal logo instead of your nation or even your locality.

Has anyone determined whether the guy with the Georgian flag (the nation, not the state) was just a moron who bought the first thing he found online for 'Georgia flag,' or if there is some weird Georgian iconography fetishism in the far right?

Leaning heavily towards the former for what should be obvious reasons.

There were a number of other national flags there so it seems less likely, unfortunately.

To be fair, the nobles did traditionally own, and by extension represent, the land.

These posts remind me of an article I read a few years ago about an Iranian factory that made hand painted American flags. The entire business was based on burning the flags, which somehow seemed reasonable to all involved.

...perfect spiral, scientists are still figuring it out...
Hey flag thread, I recently found out that Poland has two official national flags!

According to wiki,

quote:

The basic variant of the national flag is a plain white-and-red horizontal bicolor. A variant defaced with the coat of arms is restricted to official use abroad and at sea. Legal restrictions notwithstanding, the two variants are often treated as interchangeable in practice.

But my question is: do these have any unofficial political significance? I'm aware there's currently a big old chasm in Polish politics between people who think women are human beings and a super Trumpy block of arseholes, does either side favour one or the other flag?

I guess I'm a flag nerd because a few errors in that article jumped out at me.

1) In the diagram at the top of the page, the upside-down US flag is inverted the wrong way; rotated 180 in-plane instead of mirrored vertically. (In other words, the pole is still at the left side, as always, and the sewn-in attachment points don't magically move to the other end of the flag.)
2) They miscounted the stars on the Confederate battle flag.
3) I admit this one's nitpicky as hell, but they refer to the Betsy Ross flag having 13 stars in the "corner", not in the "canton". :argh:

I am hoping some of you flag experts can help me ID a flag I saw hanging in a home office over a Zoom call. By memory it was in a Texas home, seven alternating red and white stripes and sixteen (I think) stars in a circle in the upper left. Definitely didn't match any representation of the Betsy Ross flag that I have seen. My first thought it that it was an historic Texas flag, but did not match any Texas flag I could find.

Thank You

What color were the stars? Was the corner a different color?

Can you draw a lovely MS Paint sketch of the flag, maybe?

There's quite a few countries with both civil and state flags, the latter representing the head of state and government. I don't think it's an issue for anyone in Poland or elsewhere.

White stars on a blue canton. And it's possible that the canton is like the left 1/3rd of the flag. Seven red and white alternating stripes.

Thanks for the reply. Not not that. Only 7 stripes, and I think the canton wasn't actually in the corner, it was probably the left 1/3 of the flag. White stars in a circle.

Moving the vertical stripe to the fly gives the Aargau Canton of Switzerland instead:

The actual flag of my town. I have no idea what the story behind it is and most people who live here don't know it exists because there's very few mentions of it anywhere. One of the few references is the Wikipedia page: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Corvallis,_Oregon

I would have thought it was a joke except that I later noticed it flies outside city hall.

Portland's is pretty cool tho and gets cited as one of the best city flags in the US, despite kinda looking like a swastika.
