It's just so thoroughly in my playhouse that I have to see it for myself even though I probably won't like it. But it's still AUS$90 right now. I like the writing, the mechanics are solid if unspectacular, the major issue is just that the worlds are all kinda samey- you have the company town, a wilderness full of monsters and outlaws on the road (and the outlaws are sorta generic always-attack enemies), and a few dungeons. Like part of the issue is, it makes sense for the colonies to all be the same because it's like how every small town in America got homogenized but it's just not the best structure (whereas NV was built around one big overworld with the city at the center- well, the top-center- surrounded by smaller settlements with their own poo poo going on.) I do love Pavarti and will permit no harm to come to her though.

I mean at the very least they're very different games (apart from being space related.) Wilds is a sort of exploration/puzzle game where you're trying to figure out what the deal is with a star system that keeps going supernova every 15 minutes, Worlds is making your way in a capitalist hellscape.

Outer Wilds is loving incredible and will make you mourn the fact it didn't sell 10 million copies and get every award there was because it's practically high art. Outer Worlds is a technically finished game lacking any depth or nuance beyond "is forcing people into slavery aksually bad if the alternative is death?" and Borderlands style combat but with lovely guns and way less fun. Also surprisingly ugly for a modern AAA $60 game.

Outer Worlds to my understanding is preaching to the choir and not saying anything particularly revolutionary, but at least the choir they're preaching to is one that hasn't exactly had a lot of AAA content catering to them. There's that, at least.

Yeah Outer Wilds ends up having the better writing. Outer Worlds idea of nuance is saying "Sure, corporate slavery is bad, but what if the leader of the rebels occasionally kicked puppies on purpose? Perhaps the truth is somewhere in the middle." They managed to write one good companion to tick every checkbox (asexual lesbian woman of colour) and then apparently ran out of their writing budget based on the rest of the game.

The Outer Worlds is just such a thoroughly mediocre experience that it ends up feeling kind of offensive after awhile. People tend to fixate on the tepid satire but if any other part of the game was interesting or fun to play, then it would probably be more fondly remembered.

The thing is that it was always gonna be a sub-AAA game with average gunplay that would live or die on the strength of its writing. Disco Elysium cost a fraction of the budget but is a great game even though all you do is click things and talk to people to read text. If Outer Worlds had writing that was actually thoughtful and good too we would have excused the average actual gameplay. It doesn't have to be top-tier writing. Tales from the Borderlands is much better too and that's making the most of a setting just by approaching it from the point of view of "What if you're not a badass gun-toting vault hunter, you're just a corporate drone or alternatively, a poor hustler."

People tend to fixate on the tepid satire but if any other part of the game was interesting or fun to play, then it would probably be more fondly remembered. The game has a side quest to get a priest hosed up on ayahuasca tea to confront his beliefs on whether the universe is predetermined (per his Bible) or if free will exists, by confronting a spectral image of his parents who disowned him And they made it loving boring. You go to the most boring map in the whole game, talk to a token shaman character, begin the vision-quest racist bullshit, and instead of doing something cool like arriving in the Sheogorath-style dream dimension where reality can bend, you just watch a dude argue with his mom about how he was a gently caress-up for being a priest instead of a wealthy failson. For completing the quest he gets the perk of Gets Better At Doing Drugs. They had a whole opportunity for a quest of questioning the theology of a hyper capitalist science fiction world, and decided to poo poo the bed instead E: I guess the whole vision quest thing itself is dragging the game down, but being disappointed that a racist stereotype wasn't a dumpster fire is also itself an extremely lovely perspective bawk has a new favorite as of 15:29 on Jan 14, 2021 |

There's not really a way to make having someone else go on a drug trip be fun and engaging, it's like the world's worst escort mission. Which, you know... should be a reason not to include a quest like that in the first place, not to do it but make it deliberately unfun.

I'm picturing a minigame very much like Lemmings. Why isn't Lemmings gameplay a thing anymore? Lemmings used to be huge, there were ports for any system you can imagine, a not insignificant number of knockoffs, and it seems to have completely dropped from the collective gaming consciousness.

Outer Worlds' gravest offense is that it never got to the exciting part. You will have a feeling that things are leading up to the interesting turn, and you will finished the game with that feeling.

The Outer Worlds sequel has room to turn around on the original's too safe and familar gameplay. I've never seen Firefly and don't want to, so they could riff on cooler material next-time. Deadfire sadly underperformed commercially despite having shark-people practicing realpolitik and a hell of a lot more flavor in its setting. I like everything about Disco Elysium except the act of actually playing it. Since there's no combat or puzzles all the non-dialogue bits are just you hauling rear end across the map, picking up junk, and running into load-screens.

My Lovely Horse posted:I'm picturing a minigame very much like Lemmings. I'm pretty sure it's similar to why there aren't space flight combat games anymore; the big player in the genre (in this case, Lemmings) cornered the market on their game genre so hard there basically wasn't competition anymore, and then stopped making their game. In Lemmings' case it was in part because the developers made a game about being a criminal in an open world that wound up getting pretty popular. ...which weirdly also has something in common with the last-man-standing of space flight combat games; the publisher of Freespace went under, and the developer was kinda quiet and nondescript for a console generation or so until they made a game about being a criminal in an open world that also got pretty popular.

Zombie Night Terror is pretty decent newish Lemmings clone. https://store.steampowered.com/app/416680/Zombie_Night_Terror/ There's other indie attempts as well, but I feel like the genre just isn't very popular. Requiring both puzzle solving and well-timed mouse clicking is a big hurdle (I guess you can solve some of that with good rewind/pause mechanics). AFAIK the Lemmings sequels weren't big hits either.

Oh man have I hit a roadblock in Persona 5 Royal, Okumura and his loving robots, you have to beat each wave of robots in 2 turns or they run away and he resummons them at full health, the trouble is that as you progress through the fight the robots get stronger and have different weakenesses. You basically need to have every element available to you and have ways to counteract the buffs and debuffs Okumura himself casts, its a horrible nightmare.

So I never played Skyrim when it came out, I had a busy job back then so no time for big open world rpgs. Decided during the new and improved recent lockdown to give the Special Edition a go. As a result, I am now about to criticize an old game thats been discussed too many times in this thread over the course of many years. Enjoy. - The combat. Apparently the thing to do is spec your character as a stealth archer, which does not suit my playstyle at all. I like to hit things with swords. Skyrim gives you really big swords. Whacking enemies with them is sort of like waving a pool noodle at a light cloud of steam while wading through treacle. Enemies that are most definitely in my sword range (ie my sword actually clips right through them and keeps going with a good swing) do not register as hit. I end up spending most fights swinging wildly like a hyperactive toddler with no idea if I've connected with anything or not. - Bethesdas poo poo optimization. Had bad framerate amongst foliage, turned a load of settings down, did not fix. Found the BethINI mod, which simply tweaks the INI file values a bit. Now I can have everything on Ultra at 60 FPS plus. What, indeed, the gently caress. Had a very similar issue with Fallout 4. Tweak your creaky loving engine you fucks. - The bugs. Despite being the Special Edition, and despite installing the most popular user bugfix, I've had to use the console to get past a quest (focussing the mirrors in the dwarven observatory, mirrors wouldnt move, apparently a notorious bug as a 2 second google search told me to "just enter this console command"), I've had a boss forget that it could attack me and simply float around the room with a stuck animation and I've t-posed several times. Also, some spells only work in some towns, sometimes. I am about 15 hours into the game. - The merchants all have an absurdly low amount of money unless I buy something from them, and most of what they sell is poo poo. The accepted method for this it to bounce around with fast travel with occassional waiting for the shop to top up its funds. I am aware there is a perk to give the merchants more money. Why not do that in the goddamn first place rather than make the player do mindless busy work just to sell their loot? - The shop/inventory interface is not designed for a mouse. Misclicks while selling things to a merchant kicks you back out to the dialogue tree. WHO THOUGHT THAT WAS ACCEPTABLE. - Your companions are actually pretty useful in combat, thats nice. What they are most useful at, however, is standing RIGHT IN THE loving DOORWAY I'M TRYING TO GET OUT OF MOVE YOU PIECE OF poo poo Despite this, I am actually enjoying this game because I am a broken human being that likes exploring fantasy lands. What amazes me is how many releases this game has and how little they've actually managed to fix during that development time. I was determined to play through vanilla as much as possible in order to get the "intended experience". That time has ended. I am now going to have to fall down the rabbit hole of Bethesda modding in order to stop myself eating my own head, so wish me luck dear thread. It's been fun. I am one of those guys now.

Haru especially is a beast with her triple hit gun attack - luck is required. Sometimes the suicide robots don't work out for you. Chill, heal, wait for the next two rounds
