The dorms at the state college where closets and not always nicely furnished, but I always had AC, Running Water, and was never charged for poo poo that wasn't my fault. I cannot say the same for any apartment I've lived in.

The fact is someone at some level has to be in charge of distribution of the goods. Ideally this would mean that person gives themselves and their cronies the same thing everyone else gets, in reality this means they get large homes, swimming pools, plenty of food, while the people get whatever is left over. Also once they have these things they want to keep them so any dissent, or perceived dissent gets punished severely. The best to enact something like this would be a social safety net, except unlike what has been tried previously in this country one that has an exit plan. So if you are in poverty you get food, shelter and housing, but also a roadmap to work towards not being in poverty, to not having to rely on the state to provide for you. Of course this is way easier said then done, and some people will unfortunately never be able to leave the care of the state. Some people legitimately do not have the ability to ever care for themselves, or at least not in a capacity for long term growth. In those cases then the safety net for them should be permanent. I don't have all the answers these are just some ideas, historically though we know that communism/socialism have only led to totalitarian regimes. Socialist democracies like the nordic countries people often point too are ok, but they have their own problems that people from the outside don't see, and they also enjoy being relatively small populations.
