babyeatingpsychopath posted:

Based on context and language, I suspect "thickening" is some kind of dynamic suspension travel adjustment, and "undercut" just means the suspension bottomed out and they cut the tire on the bodywork.

I am interested to see if my interpretation is correct.

This is definitely possible.

But this was my guess. Of course it could also be both which given the discussion below may be most likely.

Theres some interesting discussion of the role of mechanic in the truck in this article. Bikes get a rider, cars get a driver and a navigator and trucks get a driver, a navigator and a mechanic.

article posted:

These dials are for the mechanic to monitor the tyre pressure in all four wheels, and adjust it on the go if required, and at the same time to monitor the engine temperature, he explained through a translator.

In sand the tyres should be 1 bar and on the normal road it could be up to 6 bars.

The four flappy paddles on the steering wheel are for stabilisation, to make suspension adjustments for each wheel, because when you race you need to make constantly make different adjustments, for off-road and on sand.

The steering wheel buttons are for the cruise control, and scrolling through the monitor options, he said pointing to the little screen behind the wheel, a screen which also features in front of the mechanic, who sits staggered between the driver and navigator.

During the race the mechanic works from the computer, because its very bumpy in the cabin and the pilot needs to focus on driving, he explained. But in the showcase or when the pilot drives alone they need it to be able to check everything on the tablet.

DAY ELEVEN

First things first. Toby Price is doing well. He'll need surgery but he'll be right. I don't know whether or not this was his last race on a bike. I think the writing on the wall has been that he'll be moving over to cars at some point and I can't blame him. Given the punishment his body has taken and continues to take, it's sensible to stop if you can.
https://twitter.com/tobyprice87/status/1349258542893604867

I said it before, but I really love this part of rally. It's not every sport that you stop and help your fellow competitors and the friendship that clearly exists among the top bike riders is heartwarming.
https://twitter.com/tobyprice87/status/1349258612317712384

Second, Sara Jugla and Alexandre Bispo didn't make it yesterday. They had a good run and I hope they come back next year. Bispo had a red lantern on his helmet this year. The lanterne rouge is the prize given out to the very last finisher every year. Maybe next year.

Now, on to today's stage!

https://twitter.com/dakar/status/1349221248170151937

The big question for the day was what Honda's strategy would be. Benavides was leading out and then you had Ricky and then Nacho. I thought one option was to preserve the win and have Benavides and Brabec wait for Nacho and then just ride it home. That... was not what happened. Instead, in a nod to documentary filmmakers everywhere, Ricky Brabec decided that there were only two options. First or last. He quickly overtook Benavides and then continued to build his lead while navigating in first. Nacho crashed and while he managed to continue he still ended up 17 minutes 42 seconds down on the day. Joan Barreda Bort heard me talking poo poo about his tires (and his strategy, see below) and came in second, three minutes behind Ricky even though JBB started in seventh. To be clear, nobody has done anything like this in this Dakar. Starting second and then just turning on the afterburners and putting time on people while leading out. Benavides finished five minutes back of Ricky and Skyler Howes was 40 seconds further back in fifth. Sam Sunderland proved me entirely wrong and finished twelve minutes back.

But, at least I was right about one thing. JBB crashed yesterday (a lot?) and hurt his leg and that's why lost 14 minutes yesterday and is not winning this year. Shock. All the top riders ride out near the edge for at least long enough portions of the race that they're taking risk but Barreda has always been about the pin it to win it life which in Dakar just doesn't work. Nobody can ride at 100% for two grueling weeks.

The counterpoint in this dakar is AVB, who in past years has been exactly the same kind of hell for leather devil may care saisissez-le et dchirez-le style and... results. However, he's had worse injuries than JBB and this year he's very clearly taking a more measured approach. He also took a 15 minute penalty, almost certainly for changing a piston after teammate Ross Branch's engine broke yesterday. So van Beveren is in tenth. He has the speed to ride at the front and was doing extraordinarily well until he had that 30 minute brain fart trying to find a waypoint he'd already hit. I think a more mature version of van Beveren has a shot at a win so this is nice progress. But Yamaha's factory team is actually Yamaha europe which is actually Yamaha france and that means that the amount of dollars being spent pales beside KTM and Honda, to say nothing of not having a bike designed specifically for Dakar as KTM and Honda do. Whatever his future holds, he'll always have style.
https://twitter.com/dakar/status/1349246913229578242

The overall now is Benavides in first, Ricky in second 50 seconds back, Nacho in third one minute back and Sunderland a distant fourth, ten minutes 36 seconds back. That's a Honda 1-2-3 and almost certain doom for KTM's hopes at resuming their Dakar dominance. The question for tomorrow? Can Brabec repeat by leading out and putting even more time on his competitors or will it be too little too late. He's certainly done a miraculous job just putting himself back on the podium at this point and today's ride was just incredible.

As I was putting this together, I discovered that Nacho is out! After his crash, he was examined by medical and then withdrew. Hopefully he's OK. He was the best navigator Honda had left and starting so far down he could have made up huge minutes. Now it's just Ricky and Kevin duking it out up front.

Nacho posted:

We failed the mission Today I had a very strong fall that left me unconscious for a few minutes. I was able to get back on the bike, but very slowly and with the bike all bent. We made the finish line on stage 10, but for safety I have to get checked for the heavy blow to the head. I feel like a train passed me overhead, but we're going to be fine. I have nothing left but to thank the tremendous support of my team, my family, my coaches and all of you for the good vibes. We were close to the big dream, but it will be pending. I'm sorry and thanks for everything

Maybe you've heard of my boy, Skyler Howes? Just a reminder he sold everything he owns other than a trials bike to get here.

Juanitos Pistoles continues to do pretty well, he's up in fifty first place after today!

In the cars, Peterhansel's strategy at this point is clear. He's 17 minutes up on Nasser in first place and he's just going to follow Nasser until the end. Today he finished third, 49 seconds behind Nasser and 2m53s behind the leader, and local hero Yazeed al Rajhi. Yazeed's tire uh... how did you do that? Other than, you know, the Toyota's are just a lot harder on tires being significantly heavier and 4WD.

At this point there's nothing Nasser can do but hope for a mistake from THIRTEEN TIME DAKAR WINNER, Stefan "Mr. Dakar" Peterhansel.

Maybe he'll retire soon?

Carlos Sainz is still racing and hasn't complained about navigation. It is unclear whether his navigator is still alive or if he has been replaced with a crash test dummy and Sainz is just following tracks.

In trucks, Martin Macik's Iveco took a massive one minute and forty seconds out of Sotnikov's lead. That puts us with Loprais still the closest back overall in fourth. Twenty one minutes behind third and one hour thirty five minutes behind first.

$100-120k for a bike are the numbers I've heard. Manny is a famous pennypincher so when he says "this is what I did it for" then that's literally the cheapest possible way to do it. These are also all South America numbers.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nTM9BcXYtVM

I can't imagine going and doing malle moto your first time (or your second or...). Malle moto is no outside assistance. The factory mechanics will still tell you what to do if your bike is hosed (maybe? if you've been nice?) but you have to do it and so you end up spending a ton more time than anyone else does.

For a car? I have no idea. I've heard a million dollars as a number but I have literally no idea how accurate that is. From some looking, it seems like maybe the bottom end is more like 300k. I assume a SxS is cheaper than a car (but more than a bike) so maybe 200k for one of those?

I don't mean to keep picking on him as Bam Bam is a great racer who just keeps coming back for more and he's never been lovely to teammates or media or anything like that. His race strategy is just bad and frustrating because he actually has the speed and talent to win and then his brain betrays him. A 12 minute lead over Ricky at ~1/2 way through the stage! THAT IS SO FAST. I just hope he doesn't... oh.

dakar.com posted:

Joan Barreda boasts a lead of 12' over Ricky Brabec after 215 km! However, the Spaniard has not stopped at the refuelling point and has continued the special. The fifth placed rider in the general standings is likely to receive a big penalty at the finish and could end up running out of petrol...

There are two big mistakes he made here. First, he's going to run out of gas. Second, remember how I said that racers know where other folks are on the track around them because fueling stops are 15 minutes? So you know how far back they start and you can tell by when they arrive/depart where they are in relation to you? Well, it's a mandatory 15 minutes. There's a two minute penalty for every 30 seconds early that you leave. So if you leave five minutes early that's a twenty minute penalty. That means that he's got a HUGE one hour penalty coming. He was 15 minutes back in fifth yesterday, close enough he could have contended for the podium with a bit of luck (or the win with a LOT of luck). With an hour penalty, he'd drop back to tenth. But... he never made it to the fourth checkpoint on today's stage.

11:16 Barreda, dry! Joan Barreda ran out of gas at km 267! Unfortunately, after missing the refueling point, the Spaniard was at risk.

Of course, there's a dark side to the race too and I wouldn't be fair if I didn't talk about it at least a little. When JBB fell a couple days ago (because he was pushing too hard and managing tires poorly...), he almost certainly got a concussion. So how much of today's mistake is just the Dakar snowball becoming an avalanche and how much is a person with a brain injury?

JBB instagram translation posted:

I'm sorry, friends. I am in the hospital performing a head scan. The fall of two days ago in which I lost consciousness for a few minutes has taken its toll today.

I really wanted to continue in the race and finish my best, but it couldn't be. I want to thank my team @rallyteamhrc and all of you for always being there.
https://www.instagram.com/p/CKBttEUnrlo/

So, now you know that JBB didn't win today's stage, who did and could Brabec repeat his amazing performance of yesterday? Sadly, no. Brabec ended up losing 12m46s and coming in sixth, six minutes behind Benavides. Sam Sunderland blazed to the front and the overall is now Benavides, Sunderlands +4m12s, Ricky +7m13s. Daniel "mini price" Sanders is fourth and Skyler Howes is in fifth. It will be interesting to see what happens with teams next year as Sanders and Howes both deserve factory rides.

The big question now becomes what the orga does with start order. Traditionally, the final stage of Dakar is a bit of a parade stage. Like the tour de france (which ASO also runs) and the Champs-lyses. On the parade stage, the start order is reversed so the slowest bike starts first and the fastest starts last and everyone arrives at roughly the same time for additional spectacle. But tomorrow's stage is 200km, with almost 100km of dunes. Not an easy stage by any stretch, although not a 450km stage either. Certainly enough though that the winner may well be determined by whether ASO decides to do the traditional reverse start order on the last day or the regular competitive stage order with the fastest from the prior day leading out.

Regular Start
1 - SAM SUNDERLAND (GBR) KTM
2 - PABLO QUINTANILLA (CHL) HUSQVARNA
3 - KEVIN BENAVIDES (ARG) HONDA
4 - DANIEL SANDERS (AUS) KTM
5 - MATTHIAS WALKNER (AUT) KTM
6 - RICKY BRABEC (USA) HONDA

Ricky would get a chance to make up the seven minutes following tracks through the dunes and Sunderland is almost certainly out of contention because he has to lead. It really comes down to whether Ricky can be seven minutes faster than Benavides with with five tracks already laid vs. Benavides two. It's a tossup, but you have to think that barring some very bad luck or a bad mistake, one of the two Hondas wins.

Traditional Reverse Start
1-52 slower riders
53 - RICKY BRABEC (USA) HONDA
54 - MATTHIAS WALKNER (AUT) KTM
55 - DANIEL SANDERS (AUS) KTM
56 - KEVIN BENAVIDES (ARG) HONDA
57 - PABLO QUINTANILLA (CHL) HUSQVARNA
58 - SAM SUNDERLAND (GBR) KTM

In this scenario, it's really just a question of who's willing to slam the throttle widest and take the most risks. Sunderland has a shot four minutes back, Brabec is almost certainly out and Benavides is very much the clear favorite.

We'll find out tonight (Saudi time) what ASO chooses, but that decision will play a huge part in who wins and ASO has to be feeling fairly sheepish that they didn't publish the start order ahead of time so they're not seen playing favorites. Of course, nobody here is french so any favorites will be a question of whether they think Honda or KTM will put more dollars in...

Look at Juanitos Pistoles's helmet. It's so good. Just another reason he is part of the official SomethingAwful Forums race team.

Some pics from yesterday. It's been a tough year for Quintanilla,

That rock!

Looking for that rock. Found a different rock.

"QUIET! Or Kamaz will hear you." The truck class started out as support vehicles for other racers as on stage you're only permitted to get help from other racers (unless you're slow, then anyone can help you and nobody will bat an eye). Then the folks driving the trucks started actually racing. Presumably this occurred approximately .03 seconds after sitting in the cab and firing up the engine. But trucks are still used as support vehicles. Peterhansel was, for example, able to replace part of his car on the marathon stage because mini has a truck with a ton of spare parts following along and the truck team members are basically a team of mechanics for Peterhansel. You saw Price playing bush mechanic but Mr. Dakar's hands stay clean.

The trucks provide another important service.

The skill of these helicopter pilots is incredible.

Car is 12% tape by volume.

Look at the size of those wrenches!

A real quad participating in a category about which I care deeply.

I also care deeply about side by sides and they are an important category with a deep, meaningful history.

Sadly, no footage of how this happened.

At least he fixed his wheel and got another tire.

DAY THIRTEEN

Not all news from the day was happy. Rest in peace Pierre Cherpin. He had crashed on stage seven and died when being flown back to france to be (further) operated on.
https://www.dakar.com/en/news/2021/pierre-cherpin-biker-111-fra-passed-away/172003

The Final Day

Sam Sunderland led out on the last day and the only real question was could Ricky, starting in sixth, make up seven minutes on Benavides, starting in third.
https://twitter.com/damonrelator/status/1349930452795142147

Sunderland immediately fell behind and Benavides is leading out! KB is the blue. It seems an almost impossible task to lead out and not lose significant time to Ricky.

After WP2, KB continued to show blazing speed leading out and Ricky was still six minutes back. To catch KB he'd have to get him within sight which, for a race lasting two weeks and 45 hours of racing, is just remarkable.
https://twitter.com/dakar/status/1349969313474752514

And... Ricky wins the stage! But by only two minutes. Kevin Benavides becomes the first Argentinean to win the Dakar (except in quads...)! Last year's champion, Ricky Brabec finishes second, just five minutes and seven seconds behind after forty five hours of racing.
https://twitter.com/dakar/status/1350051197433032704

Sam Sunderland on KTM was third.

This is Honda's first 1-2 on the podium since 1986.

Here's what the bikes looked like back then.

And today.

Skyler Howes finished fifth! Which is good because it includes a 5k prize which he can use to pick up a beater so that he doesn't have to ride his mountain bike to work. He really deserves a factory ride.

Skyler posted:

5th overall!!!

This one feels good. The amount of hard work and sacrifice it took just to get here. The racing was next level, this was one tough Dakar. To be at the finish is a huge relief and to be top privateer and land in the top 5... drat this is something Im proud of. The people that came together and supported me, bought a t shirt, my sponsors, the encouragement, it wouldnt be possible without all of you! My team was amazing, thank you @bas_dakar for giving me the tools to accomplish this and keep me going every day.

Ricky posted:

Thank you all for the support, we came here for one thing and one thing only. We rode our rear end off, made mistakes, learned from them but failed the mission. Let's settle for the #2 🙏🏼 the team did a excellent job and so did all the riders. #2022

I've been happy to see AVB's new-found caution and hope he can finish solidly this year and then combine race craft and his flair for wheelies into at least a podium.
https://twitter.com/dakar/status/1349945394546016257?s=21

poo poo. I've mentioned this before, but Yamaha is actually Yamaha france and as a result their bikes are WR450s with some rally kit rather than purpose-built rally bikes with real factory support like Honda and KTM. In the past their riders have crashed out but this year the bikes let them down across the board (except Andrew Short who got booted by bad gas).
https://twitter.com/dakar/status/1349955935993819138

Daniel Sanders has been a fantastic rookie. But, he's not entirely unknown as he did win the ISDE six days in 2019 and was Aussie Off Road Champion. The last fast Australian was Toby Price who finished third in his first Dakar and then won two. Does Sanders fourth place finish mean he'll go on to win next year?

In the cars, Nasser, like Ricky, managed to take two minutes out of the leader but Stefan Peterhansel's lead was just too much and Mr. Dakar wins his FOURTEENTH championship.

"Are you going to win again?" "We'll see"
Note how, now that it's over, nobody is even pretending that he won't win again if he keeps racing.
https://twitter.com/dakar/status/1350012083535024128

It's not for lack of trying. Nasser is absolutely wide open here.
https://www.instagram.com/p/CKD70okhAc5/
https://www.instagram.com/p/CKDV8WyhRF8/

Look how nice Nasser is and how uh... excited, Sainz is to see this guy. I always feel a little sympathy for celebrities approached by random folks in the middle of a ridiculous desert race with a frustrating result but... one of these dudes is not like the other.
https://photos.smugmug.com/Other/Util/Dakar/i-nCTZ4ST/0/c7490101/636/WhatsApp%20Video%202021-01-15%20at%2005.38.09_mp4-636.mp4

I know I'm picking on him now and it's not fair because good God it must be so frustrating to be that fast and try so hard and just know that the only way you're winning is if Nasser somehow crashes into Peterhansel and they both catch fire before getting run over by a Kamaz. But I laughed when Sainz's own instagram consoled him and chose this picture.
https://twitter.com/Carlossainz55/status/1350055749339275266/photo/1

Wait! I've changed my mind about Sainz!
https://twitter.com/CSainz_oficial/status/1350092343228166147

This is just fine too.
https://twitter.com/dakar/status/1349990956427337732

Next year, Nani Roma will be rejoined by his teammate Loeb. Who will still not win.

In the trucks, Kamaz is... inevitable. After coming in second in 2017 and 2019, Sotnikov finally finished in first, with teammates Shibalov and Mardeev coming in second and third.
https://twitter.com/dakar/status/1350095404763906051

That's just raw emotion right there.
https://twitter.com/KAMAZmasterTEAM/status/1350031556723802115

He's been planning this for a while now I bet.
https://twitter.com/dakar/status/1350066454079524866

These are the official two best photos. It's weird because neither contains a truck.

Some folks were a little melodramatic about that.

Not wrong. Just melodramatic.

Yazeed ended up seven hours back in sixteenth, but not too shabby nonetheless.

Is that lens or the car worth more?

Definitely the lens.

Saucer of milk, table two.

Prokop's ford finished ninth. Four hours and nine minutes back.

One of those pictures that makes me realize just how fun this must be and how terrible the consequences of any mistake.

I like the mirrors. They look very functional.

You think the trucks cannot find you up there? It will just make them angry.

Pretty sure these two are from yesterday.

And now it's time for Dakar winner Kevin Benavides to ride off into the sunset.

Until next year.
