Game's still as good as ever. Sort of surprised I didn't run into any one of those bots while on Valve servers tonight.

I’ve noticed Bots are sent to specific gametypes. A lot are in the Smissmiss rotation and not the regular. I play evenings so I can usually jump on Creators/Uncletopia/ LazyPub with a decent amount of other people and active server admins if casual is a mess.

I haven't played this game in 3 months. I joined a server, killed some dudes, got a pocket medic and then some hacker joins with my name and votekicks me the instant they load. Ok, sad but nothing new. I played on 3 other games and this same person joined within 2 minutes, micspamming. Always joining with my name and votekicking me. How are they following me, and why? I haven't played in months. This is them, my weird stalker man
https://steamcommunity.com/profiles/76561198074095616

I played 3 maps on an alt account with no more stalkers. Everything was fine except there were still aimhacking sniper-bots so actually not fine. Eventually one was kicked and his friend/2nd bot left. This is normal for TF2 now I assume? Past 2 years every time I fire this game up I have the same experience.

I’ve given up on casual and pretty much only play community servers these days. It’s a shame that valve literally gives no fucks. I don’t mind lack of updates in a decade old game, but if your still making money at least make the base game playable.

If the end of year lists are any indication apparently tf2 still made it into like top 50 most revenue on steam lmao

Oxygenpoisoning

It’s been steady in the top 10 this year and been pretty high after the smissmas update, so not super surprising. I think the game is unique enough to that it could stay in the higher tiers if they just used community updates for maps and events. Seems like easy ROI.

I really hope Mastercoms gets hired by Valve, I assume she would pay attention to the bot problem / have the skills to fix whatever they're exploiting.

Unfortunately the bot problem seems to be a result of TF2's current F2P model combined with running on spaghetti code that's almost old enough to vote and probably isn't fixable without a massive change

otoh, Valve is showing interest in going at the source directly, especially since I've seen botters start to sell "bot exemptions" to players for real world money, which seems to cross the line from "breaks the ToS" to "literally illegal"

Oxygenpoisoning
Feb 21, 2006
There have always been hackers. I don’t think the F2P model really has much to do with it since Valve hasn’t been banning in the first place. I could see the potential, but they are also using 1000 hour accounts that have unusuals that they snagged from scams and other avenues as well.

Its strange having dealt with an endless conga line of regular sniper bots and then getting a legit hacker with an actual person behind the mouse. Just silent aiming as a heavy, its almost quaint.

Anyone got any recommendations for servers that are consistently populated, getting sick of the Uncletopia servers, they're full of assholes

Oxygenpoisoning
Feb 21, 2006
Depends on what your looking for. A lot of the people that play on Danes play on Creators.tf servers. They have better moderation imo but play more custom maps than anything. It’s still no crit no spread.

Other than that, most only fill in the evening. I play on the lazy pub as well, but it’s got some really bad custom maps that are based on gimmicks.

I was playing last night and I think I saw one bot all evening. I wonder if Valve has cracked down on bots or done a big VAC ban wave. I actually had a bunch of balanced, pleasant games, it was really nice.

Does anyone have experience with server config settings? I'm running a MvM server for some games with friends and would like a way to give us unlimited retries on waves we fail especially since we're going as a group of five instead of six.

do you not normally on a custom server? you do on official servers.

Come to think of it, it may have been the automatic map rotation timer? We were able to load the checkpoint several times before the server automatically rotated to the next MvM map.

Played this morning for a good long while and saw just one. A couple of my friends are just getting into the game at the moment so if the bots have vanished that's gonna make a much better first impression, hah.

Speaking of the new player experience: it keeps asking those friends what they think of random crits, and stuff like that. They have absolutely no idea how to answer that, and I've never even seen those popups! Recognise my thousands of hours, Valve, I want to tell you that random crits are good.

Oxygenpoisoning

I can’t stand random crits or random spread. Granted I probably benefit from crits more so than others due to my preferred play style, but they aren’t very satisfying to me to use or to die to.

I'm pretty sure that I'm in the minority of liking random crits because they often lead to really stupid and funny poo poo which I believe is the heart of TF2

edit: Never not taunt when you kill with a random crit. Especially if taunting will get you killed

The best random crit is when it's a sick airshot on someone bombing you, and you just delete them. But it wasn't just a lucky crit, it was the combination of crit + sick airshot that made the magic happen.

Someday we'll get that server mod that forces taunt after every kill. Someday.

I always taunt after a domination, I don't care if I'm ubered or kritzed or it will kill me.

This game still whips hard. Lady VG and I were watching the 'Meet The' videos last night and it really does make me sad that they had all these ideas for videos and comics and just dropped them. I would give anything for a team to start paying full attention to the game again like with the big updates.

Same but it will never, ever happen. Valve only give a poo poo about TF2 insomuch as it still generates money via hats. It will never be updated and will never have a sequel.

VideoGames
Aug 18, 2003
Part of the genius that got us watching them again was Lady VG came across a video (no idea how true it was or not but for the purposes of the video we took it as true) about a non gamer lady who did not have any clue what TF2 was but was asked to react to the Meet the Videos. She watched them in a bit of a strange order, but she had a whale of a time and was laughing and enjoying it.

It really hit home just how phenomenally designed this game was and how it really does suck that they are content to drop something so, so good.

It's not even particularly hard, there's already code that makes bots do it if you set the right setting
