Gonzo McFee posted:https://twitter.com/danbloom1/status/1350731276504993792?s=19 The funny thing is if you look at it without context the vaccinations have - so far - been wildly successful. They're hitting >250k/day and the whole system isn't yet stood up (IIRC they want to be doing 4 million a week by Feb, so they're on-target for that), although there's some pretty sharp divides regionally. I think this might be a case where they're so aware of their own capacity for fuckups that they came up with a plan *expecting* it to be a catastrophe, and now it seems to be working more-or-less okay they don't actually have a Plan A. Like because they gave themselves these two big cheat codes they never bothered planning how to do the jabs properly and now it looks like they might be in the ridiculous position of running out of high-priority cases before having a plan to get people in for their second jabs. Of course there's still some big speedbumps on the way - at the moment demand is still outstripping supply which means they can punt a lot of problems with getting those in need but who are reluctant to take it for either personal or logistical reasons down the road, they've still not apparently got any sort of plan for how to deal with lower-priority cases, and of course the additional capacity is going to be coming from Serco et. al. (AIUI all current vaccination centres are 100% NHS-run, they're going to start moving testing centres to do jabs this week) so the fuckup capacity is going to go through the roof.

There was something on FB last night from either Wales Online or South Wales Argus complaining about how people are just not turning up for vaccinations without informing that they're not coming. However, the comments are absolutely chock full of people saying they had the vaccination at their GP and then got sent invitations for 'first vaccinations' from sometimes two or more different locations giving set appointment times, but people can't get anyone to answer the phones to cancel their unneeded appointments. Also, people who physically cannot get to where they are supposed to go from being either housebound-disabled or no transport. Again, noone is answering phones to be able to cancel appointments. Seems whoever is managing it in Wales is managing to fk up distribution too.

Did anyone else who uses twitter notice this insidious theme that is spreading as in "Rashford did more to help poor people than Corbyn / Corbyn supporters ever did"? Call them Person A I feel it is designed to get Corbyn supporters to either spend hours rushing around finding facts and data about help given by Corbyn (which the left absolutely must resist doing because the right don't actually give a drat about evidence) or to get Corbyn supporters saying stuff like 'yes they do' (and so Person A can start spreading poo poo like 'Corbyn supporters hate Rashford" Ie the comments are designed to split and damage and I'm sure they are coordinated in some sort of 'how to get Corbynistas to do a pile on' group. Many Corbyn supporters that I know have helped personally in food banks, making meals for kids in summer holidays (pre covid), working in local groups ensuring the self-isolating or disabled can get shopping or medications etc, all sorts of locally based support services. I really had to bite my fingers not to jump in on some of those poo poo-stirring threads.

It may also be an attempt to frame what Rashford is doing as 'good capitalism'. Look what the rich powerful guy can do, this is how welfare should be. Always remember how Tories and their voters are huge proponents of charity because it keeps people from getting too angry but also is an implicit refusal to fix the problem. If this group have just taken someone’s name and address and used it without his approval that’s really bad. Like not as bad as the time that Mossad forged a bunch of passports to pretend to be Irish people and used it to murder a foreign national. But still bad.

Just talking to a neighbour (through the window with a mask) - she's 86 and been offered a vaccination in Cwmbran. 25 miles away. No transport. She has been able to get through on the phone to cancel it and they said they'll send her an invite when it comes to our locality.

JeremoudCorbynejad posted:I got the vaccine yesterday and so far have only experienced one symptom: an overwhelming urge to buy a Surface Pro As someone who really likes surface it's definitely a complex choice. The screen is great for colour accuracy/sketching (if you get the pen) and resolution, but it's no longer incomparably ahead of others in the same price range. The form factor is likewise nice but with the massive advances in GPU performance in the last 4 years you won't be able to do much gaming on it outside of older games, unless you get the surface book which is really expensive for what you get in terms of performance (though the up-to-4k pressure sensitive touchscreen is still better than anything for comparable price, nevermind among 2-in-1s). There is the option of gaming via geforce/ps now, which works great, but then you don't need such an expensive piece of hardware in the first place. Also the small screen is not particularly great for coding, the resolution may be excellent but you really need the screen to be bigger to make use of it, otherwise the text is too small to read without concentrating. YMMV it's still excellent as a cross between ipad pro and laptop. The smaller size of the pro compared to the book actually helps a lot if you want to use it as a tablet, the book is a bit too big to comfortably use that way.
