Does anyone else remember an early 2000s (like year 2000) FOX reality show called "Boot Camp" or something similar? It was basically just the first act of Full Metal Jacket but with reality show contestants going through some bastardization of military boot camp for the cameras? I remember my middle school friends and I were like, enamored with it for a season because we all had poo poo father figures, and then were surprised when it was canceled went away.

I never bothered to dig up much on it, but if I remember correctly it was part of that cheap/early era of reality shows where you could tell the producers were not safety-minded and didn't realize how exploitative even staged reality shows get, so the contestants really got beat to poo poo. Like bleeding, injuries, breakdowns, the works. My hunch had always been the show got canceled because someone saw it and was like "gently caress no we are so gonna get sued if we run a single frame more."

There was also "Celebrity Boot Camp", but instead of a series it was like a two-hour special. I don't remember any of the "celebrities" in it, though, other than Coolio, who won if I remember right.

The most gentle reality TV show was Coach Trip back when they sometimes had older couples on the coach and they'd just do little activities and eventually everyone would get to be such good friends that they'd just vote off the new contestants as soon as they were able to so they didn't have to vote off the friends they'd been hanging out with for weeks.

Never forget that Ted Nugent did a reality show where one of the challenges was to play chicken with an oncoming pickup truck. Your progress was tracked by bales of hay with progressively higher dollar amounts on them.

The first contestant got hit by the truck.

Tune in every week to see a group of spoiled narcissists out to save the world, all of whom have absolutely no maritime experience, take a run-down vessel into the most dangerous waters on the planet and find new and exciting ways to gently caress up and almost die.

The first season even featured one of the camera crew breaking their normal role of 'silent watcher' and outright telling a crew member "I'm getting the gently caress out of here, if you stay you are going to die," leaving their camera behind and nopeing the gently caress out of there.

Why, you ask? Because the brave captain who was steering their ancient ship, which was not rated for ice breaking, decided to sail straight through an ice field. And wanted someone to go into the tiny, cramped room under the waterline at the front of the vessel where they stored the chain for the anchor to "try and shore up any holes" if an iceberg came through the hull.

It remains the most amazing show I have ever seen. The TVIV thread going from "Yeah, you guys are heroes, stop those nasty whalers" to "Oh my god, what the gently caress is wrong with these people?" by halfway through the first episode will always be a cherished memory.

The Biggest Loser had some drama in Australia when one of the contenders had a straight up heart attack - according to rumours, might need Frakes in here to clarify.

What’s not rumour is that one contestant was convicted of producing child pornography and hastily edited out.

It’s an oddly aged show ... feels weird to make a show about screaming at fat people to lose weight is oddly judgemental compared to recent culture.

The most cursed reality show has to be The Murder Game. The 2003 UK version was won by a farmer who was voted out every single week for being the most useless member of the team but somehow managed to win nine consecutive coinflips to stay in. After he tried to parlay his "fame" into a public speaking career, being seemingly completely oblivious to the fact that everyone who might know who he was hated him. Meanwhile, the original US version was won by a New York firefighter who died on 9/11.

From what I've read the biggest problem with The Biggest Loser in every country is that the contestants usually gain back some or all of the weight after they leave the show because they no longer have the 24/7 support and personal trainer.

Although really you hear that about all those shows that are supposed to fix some aspect of a person's life. They're frequently just bandaids and as soon as the cameras are off the issues come right back.

The Food Network copy of this show, Restaurant Impossible (down to having a British chef!!) was exactly the same. The problem was most of them, by the time the show got involved, were already months and months behind bills, on top of having owners/leadership that had no idea what they were doing. I feel like in later seasons they did better about getting to restaurants in time to save them, but in the early seasons I'd look up the fate of these places and it was almost universally "shut down ~6 months later" with the owner saying that the show helped but it wasn't enough. Or the occasional delusional owner that insisted the show made it worse because the menu was too weird or something.

The early seasons only “successes” were almost exclusively because the owner managed to sell to someone else, and then the restaurant still went under months after.

The part of that first show that stuck with me was when they had to interact with supposed convicts and got points or something for physically touching them. The prisoners were actors of course, but the show pretended they weren’t, and I couldn’t help thinking how insulting the ordeal would be if they weren’t. Cruel and unusual punishment.

I think most things about that show were transparently fake to the contestants at the time of filming.

The truly depressing part was seeing Stan Lee descend into the early stages of senility. If you see him in the 90s and before, he’s incredibly witty and with-it, dirtbag though he might be.

My friend's dad was on Tattoo Rescue and he said the show was very scripted even going as far as making up an entire back story for his wife. His wife worked there with him and had her two front teeth were broken. The show told her to tell a story about them being knocked out by a bully when she was in elementary but what really happened was she broke them trying to open one of those glass coke bottles with her teeth. They got her new teeth which she has since lost.

I remember reading a piece a few years ago a out how extremely hosed up and terrible these weightloss competition shows are because they specifically require the contestants to lose weight very quickly and unsustainably, which is not only likely to result in them regaining all the weight they lost within a year or two, but also lead to them gaining even more excess weight than they would have done if they'd never been on the show :(
