I learnt that Americans call Sarsaparilla "root beer". It's really odd to hear nerd reviews of Bundaberg root beer especially of the bottle since it's a standard "stubby" bottle design similar to the alcoholic variety so beloved of other Australian beverages here. Interestingly you only see the Root Beer version on the non-Australian version of Bundaberg's website, which only shows the local Sarsaparilla-named version (I'm sure they're the same except the sugars would be corn syrup in the US and cane sugar locally).

Yes, but would a sexy barista at a hipster coffee joint check you out for ordering Sarsparilla? I think not! Checkmate, Austrailures!! (Nobody show Aristophanes that anime beer reviews page, or we're gonna start getting pornographic fanart to go with every root-beer review)

I think it's the other way around. Sarsaparilla is a type of root beer, and the stuff here in the US that markets itself as sarsaparilla is a flavor that's a bit more like halfway between cream soda and root beer. Root beer may just not be as much of a thing in Australia so they market it differently to make it sound more quaint and rustic.

Root beer may just not be as much of a thing in Australia so they market it differently to make it sound more quaint and rustic. Now that makes sense, it does sound like there was an accusation of sarsaparilla and creaming soda in the ep opposed to their definition of "root beer". But sarsaparilla has been known that way here forever and Bundaberg simply don't market it as root beer at all. And I see why now, traditional root beer is based on a carcinogenic root the sassifras so they have made it artificially for years! It's not even real any more
