Well, I understand why they’re mad. Hell, I’m mad. But I often don’t support their methods and they way don’t understand or respect liberal values. I can admit that absolute pure capitalism is evil and we need some social safety net. I think most are willing to admit that much. Some socialism is good. Social security, weekends, 8 hour days. These things wouldn’t be possIble without labor rights. So I don’t think socialism is an entirely evil monster and agree with a bit of it. But the leftists can’t understand the idea of systems. Like they will rightfully say the court system needs retooling but they would do away with the court system. We agree capitalism can be hosed Up and needs to be regulated but want to outright end it. They mock the idea of things like national sovereignty, a military, or the flaws of America and want to end all of it. They take rightful criticisms and go so far extreme with it. I was arguing with a leftist the other day and they said the American experiment is a failure and therefore should be undone completely and that it’s worth the risk that whatever replaces America is even worse than what we have now.

They well and truly scare me as much as the right.

I disagree that leftists in particular ostracize and other people who disagree. Centrists and supporters of the establishment have their own authoritarian, anti-democratic tendencies. They just involve deciding who should get extra voting power at party conventions, uniting their faction via backroom favors, and then deciding that the burden of proof is against the current head of their faction being in the right. They have a tendency to call voters dumb when they disagree and sometimes even unironically wish to institute education requirements to vote or bring back literacy tests, and they support legislation for cracking down on protests, all of this under the guise of owning CHUDs. You might ask "Well, where are the dictators who aren't economically extremely right-wing or Communist?" only because there are dictators meeting that criteria (e.g. Sisi) who are American allies.

I don't think leftists who think the court system should be abolished make up any significant proportion of leftists. What's wrong with workplace democracy? For social media companies, that strikes me as much less authoritarian than the liberal solution of government regulation and indirect censorship. If it works there, that's one area from which it can expand outward.

The problem with leftism is that it centers itself around the collective. It would be better if it focused more on the individual, then we could call it something like liberalism

That isn’t to say that I like the system. After all, I admit it needs fixing. But leftists will see legitimate problems like the justice system and say it doesn’t work because of how it treats some minorities despite that very justice system working in minorities favor in the 50’s and 60’s like in landmark cases such as Brown vs board of Education. Their argument typically is to throw the baby out with the bath water: the Justice system has a racist and oppressive history, therefore we should get rid of it wholesale. I can admit that prison industrial complex is a huge issue without saying prisons should be outlawed. That’s the rub with leftists: most off as radical reactionaries whose ideas are untested. It borders on theory crafting. And the societies they often use as examples like Sweden or Switzerland aren’t even socialist.

See the examples above: they’re kind of loony.

:patriot:

Hundreds of National Guard members were forced out of a U.S. Capitol cafeteria and into a parking garage nearby, putting them in close quarters with moving cars, exhaust fumes and troops potentially infected with the coronavirus, two soldiers told The Washington Post.

The abrupt transfer came Thursday afternoon with no explanation, the soldiers said. The cafeteria was used as a place for soldiers to rest in between guard shifts, grab a meal or conduct work such as monitoring radio traffic.

Thousands of soldiers from many states remain in Washington in response to the attempted insurrection on Jan. 6 and a mission to secure Wednesday’s presidential inauguration.

Both soldiers, noncommissioned officers in the Maryland National Guard, estimated that hundreds were forced into the structure. They inhaled exhaust fumes, found few bathrooms and struggled to sleep under the harsh fluorescent lights, the soldiers said.

“I’ve never in my entire career felt like I’ve been booted onto the curb and told, ‘Figure it out on your own,’” said one of the soldiers, who said he served in Iraq and Afghanistan. Both spoke on the condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak with reporters.

“This is absurd,” said the other soldier. One of his men was nearly struck by a car, he said.

Both soldiers said austere quarters are realities of the profession. But these conditions, they said, unnecessarily hamstring their duties. Their spaces have few electrical outlets to charge smartphones, they said, which are used for mission planning and keeping in contact with one another.

Officials with the D.C. National Guard said soldiers who finish their duty have hotel rooms where they can stay. But soldiers cannot easily return to them as they conduct shifts on and off for a few hours over a day or two at a time.

“As Congress is in session and increased foot traffic and business is being conducted, U.S. Capitol Police asked the troops to move their rest area outside of the Capitol. They were temporarily relocated to the Thurgood Marshall Judicial Center garage with heat and restroom facilities,” said Capt. Edwin Nieves Jr., a D.C. National Guard spokesman.

One portable toilet used by soldiers was overflowing onto the sidewalk, a photo obtained by The Post shows.

Both soldiers said the coronavirus is raging among National Guard members. One said he personally knows several soldiers who have been infected.

The soldier laughed when asked by a reporter to describe the protocols in place to mitigate the spread of the virus.

“There’s none,” he said. “We are on top of each other all day, every day. We’ve given up.”
