Found another serial that I'm enjoying so far; this one is superheroes plus time loop:

https://www.royalroad.com/fiction/37103/reroll

You know the drill by now; big disaster occurs and main character is caught in a time loop (roughly 2 days each iteration) and has to stop it. He gets a different superpower each iteration.

Im probably just grumpy? But it’s not good. Maybe it gets better? He’s playing in some tournament? Names are dropped? Some hot supervillain pukes on his carpet? He gets a girls number in a cafe because they’re both super good computer game players? There are heroes? Maybe a conspiracy?

i mean i understand abandoning a story quickly but i generally don't post about it unless i've gotten a few chapters in at least, particularly if someone explicitly recommended it

anyway i struggled pretty hard to get through the first chapter as well, but it's not really reflective of the quality once he gets stuck in the time loop. feels like a story that has potential but could easily wreck itself

Narmi

I read the first four chapters. It's pretty bad. The characters feel fake, the dialogue is cringey (that newscaster spat in particular), and the writing is below average.

I wouldn't call it the worst I've ever read since there are certainly worse, but it's definitely near the bottom.

Are we on earth or some other dimension? Is 6pm really in the middle of the night? Why did he go out with his trash at 2 in the morning? Why is he totally fine with a supervillain just randomly showing up? Why does he recall hearing that she torched an office building when the news report that was on just before doesn't mention that at all?

I mean I liked how he described the car accident?

I think I read two chapters.

I think I read two chapters.

1. still uncertain. it seems to be an earth with a bunch of made up cities?
2. all of the "middle of the night" scenes take place at 2 AM afaik
3. i guess he didn't want to leave the glass in his trashcan for some reason
4. he's a huge nerd that draws superhero/villain porn for even sadder nerds, and knows that she's just a thief.
5. the building she torched was on the news at some point before he mentions it.

i'm not going to defend it as high art and the main character is thoroughly unlikable for the most part, but that's sort of standard for a time loop story isn't it? part of the story is going to be him maturing due to his experiences in the loop.

my biggest criticism is definitely that it feels overly derivative of worm, and especially worm fanfic. i feel like if you ignored the different powers you could find-replace most of the heroes with worm characters, particularly wraith -> armsmaster

because you really like the word spewbeast

If the first chapter isn't a million words and isn't significantly worse, I'd probably give it a second just because the premise of the fic hasn't kicked in yet. Maybe a third if I'm feeling generous, but at that point I may have briefly switched tabs and never come back if it wasn't rapidly improving.

It's an ok fic but I tend to drop superhero ones quickly.

The bigger crime in this case is that the dialogue is extremely bad and basically reads like some nerd fantasizing about the witty dialogue he would have with a hot woman (I skipped ahead to chapter 8 to see what things were like later and oh jeez).

If you’re looking for a superhero time loop story that isn’t aggressively terrible, I’m enjoying The Perfect Run. The viewpoint character is hundreds of years into his loops and is both extremely manic and extremely overconfident, which might turn people off, but once it gets past the introduction it smooths out a lot. It’s got a decent—if derivative—setting, actual characters, and plot progression via accumulating time loop knowledge. It’s pretty alright!

I've got a few quibbles about it too and this is probably among my biggest. The author plays it off as "not many people know about video games anymore" but, honestly, he runs into enough people who do that I can't understand why none of the people who speculate about the nature of his power have managed to put two and two together, especially because he constantly introduces himself as "Hi, I'm Quicksave! I'm immortal!"

It's really fun to see other people guess about the nature of his power, though. I'm legit surprised by all of the guesses other people make as they try to make sense of him.

Having read a few more chapters I guess it's because

He does that in all his trial runs because it doesn't matter to him. The perfect run would have him ghost everything? Still quicksave is a dumb name for someone trying to hide his powers.

Maybe rewinding time is just such a bullshit power that nobody considers it?

Narmi
Feb 26, 2008
Almost everyone Quicksave meets thinks he's insane, so that probably helps explain why nobody thinks too much about his nickname. Also, I think at one point they talked about it, and they believe time manipulation is impossible (like, he'd run into photons or something)

Also, they have a semi-plausible explanations like he jump realities, or can see different realities and choose the one he likes best. Rewinding time is just not something they consider.

I find myself liking the second arc more so far. The first arc's real world half was so predictable and shallow. So was the game half I guess, but you expect an MMO to be pretty much straightforward and fighty. So I'm glad the author seems to be trying to add more interesting scenes and (hopefully) characters to the real world than just more fights.

But yeah, I think it has potential and I look forward to a more lengthy story.

I was annoyed by the protagonist's attitude until it came up that hes been doing this for hundreds of subjective years, and then it made perfect sense. I, too, would turn myself into roger rabbit for the fun of it.

Thanks for the recommendation of Perfect Run. I'm impressed by just how much better it is than Valinquer the Dragon. It has the same zany high energy comedy and action, but the characters are much stronger. Everyone is the way they are for a reason, and it grounds the wilder stuff.

I really love how you meet Len relatively quickly, and she just kind of sucks. Don't get me wrong. She's sympathetic and it makes sense that she'd be a broken shell of a person. But part of that is she just kind of sucks.

Perfect Run is significantly better than I expected (the basics of the plot and the way it's written are good enough that I felt compelled to keep reading), though I unfortunately think that the author actually believes the protagonist is cool and funny, even if there's some level of "he's gone mad from the reruns" involved. Other stuff like the evil bunny rabbit plushie kind contributes to my perception that the author just has the same sense of humor that I had when I was like 19.

One thing that bugs me about this that Re:Zero (which the author of this is very obviously partially inspired by) gets more or less correct is that people absolutely do not adjust to anything after experiencing it countless times. In reality going through terrible suffering repeatedly just makes you more afraid of it - you don't become "numb" to it or whatever. The idea of being able to become a super-expert through endless time loops is also goofy, since if that logic applied in reality all older professors/programmers/writers/engineers/etc would be dramatically better and smarter than their younger counterparts. "Getting a wide variety of skills to a somewhat high level" would be a reasonable result, but you wouldn't become some sort of hyper-expert who can type with your toes while simultaneously building things with your hands.

The author also seems to have a wildbow-esque juvenile perception of drug addiction.

The second time you meet Len kind of soured me a bit because her dynamic with the protagonist seems to be "Len is enamored with him to the point where she's been remotely spying on him, but he's just too unpredictable and dangerous!" Kinda contributes to the general feeling I get that the author unironically thinks the protagonist is really cool, even if he's not entirely mentally stable. It's cool that she's a communist tho.
