So we're just patenting black mirror episodes wholesale now eh?

owns bones, similar approaches should work OK with artificial hallucinated people. can't wait until we've removed all of the ethical issues with porn because its just ai generated people. might be a bit weird if you could seed the generator with pictures, like of microwave's mom or something, idk im not a futurist, certainly it won't be used for weird terrible poo poo.

Can you really patent something that has been so overdone already in sci-fi stories? I'm guessing the actual patent is something technological?

It sounds interesting but in practice it'd be less like the friendly ghost of grandma saying comforting things from a happy afterlife, and more like the macabre horror of a resurrected simulacrum facing its own existential oblivion. That's not to say they won't go ahead with it, but it's gonna have to be fakey and saccharine as hell with loads of "never say this" and "you WILL be happy" rules, because otherwise the bot would probably be all "AHHH I DIED PLEASE DON'T TURN ME OFF OH GOD NO I DONT WANT TO BE DEAD AGAIN", as you would reasonably expect. At least that's what I've learned from time spent torturing GPT-3.

I'm reminded of the babylon 5 episode where some bad guys make a Garibaldi hologram? And it sabotages their efforts and destroys them and itself. Which would be the best outcome.

I was told last time I was curious about patenting something, I was told that software patents really only exist for the sake of major corporations having a "mutually assured destruction" arsenal to use against each other and engage in pissing matches. They don't work for the "little guy", so small businesses asking about it usually have no use for it except to sate their own egos. https://ask.metafilter.com/190897/Why-arent-websites-usually-patented https://softwareengineering.stackexchange.com/questions/93806/should-i-patent-my-software I had been thinking along the lines of allowing people to construct an NPC dialog tree by recording videos, with a UI for navigating the tree, but never this creepy AI stuff. Maybe it'd be worth applying for that just to gently caress with Microsoft (supposing I were serious about such a project) or hope they'd buy me out. Ideas are a dime a dozen, but you don't even have to follow up on them yourself to get a patent. galenanorth has issued a correction as of 15:15 on Jan 22, 2021 |

The one thing that patents aren’t used for is To promote the progress of science and useful arts, by securing for limited times to authors and inventors the exclusive right to their respective writings and discoveries.

"neural net" is just a fancy name for a pattern matching algorithm that was inspired by a simplified model of how real neurons work, there is nothing approaching thought or perception going on

Oyak posted:I'd like to bitch about Neuromancer. It makes absolutely zero sense starting about 1/2 way in where they start to go inside the networks. It is impossible to follow what actions Gibson is trying to portray on the page because he is bad at writing. I seem to recall a hacker Rastafarian a la Jar Jar Binks making an appearance. i actually haven't read the sprawl trilogy yet, but the bridge trilogy and the blue ant trilogies are great. i love gibson's prose, i think he's an excellent writer. his short stories are great, too. but in his last book, Agency, the succ is just insane. the idea is that a future version of our world figured out how to make 'stubs' of their past, basically alternate universes that fork from a specific point in the past. they can exchange information but not material. in the first book of the trilogy, The Peripheral, Gibson explores how people in the future version of our universe are 'third worlding' labor to one of these 'stubs'. think Amazon mechanical turk, but the workers are in 'the past' in an alternate universe you created. one of the things in the background of Agency is that Hillary won 2016 and Russian involvement in the Syrian civil war goes slightly differently, the algorithms of the future are predicting that there will be a global nuclear war in the 'stub' where Hillary won. at the beginning of the book we're primed to think that the protagonists would prevent it. Being a Gibson fan I assumed that Hillary was actually going to be the cause of the war given her tenure as SoS but nope, pure succ brain worms. there were some clues that hillary was the reason for the potential nuclear war (the 'stub' hillary won in was created by a psychopath that likes creating miserable alternate universes to torture people... like a world where Hillary wins!) but it just turns out to be teenage fanfic levels of cringe. Turns out the protagonists don't impact the nuclear tensions at all, 45 fixes the problem all by herself. None of the nuclear tension stuff has anything to do with the plot of the novel, it's just background noise. Here's the conversation when someone asks if the protagonists were responsible for averting nuclear war: quote:“Nope. That’s the president. Plus, as our London pals remind me, the United States having a fully functioning State Department. We did check her work, though. Close to perfect, except for one little thing, something she did for the right reasons but then couldn’t see why it hadn’t worked.” Here's the end of the penultimate chapter. What the gently caress is this poo poo, Gibson? What the gently caress? quote:The president,” said Kathy Fang. “She got us out of it.” Verity saw Joe-Eddy smirk. “Eunice says it was the president,” Verity said to him.“The president,” said Kathy Fang, raising her coffee, and they all clinked mugs, toasting the president. Conner, in the drone, thrust its manipulator’s thumb-equivalents up in support, and she heard Ash’s voice join in as well.
