Don't know why you'd want to watch a singing contest over a Gaki no Tsukai New Year's batsu special.

New Year's with friends isn't a huge thing in east asian countries since it's so drat important as a family holiday. It's like watching Japanese people have a party with friends on Christmas Eve or Day, something most people wouldn't do in the West given it's importance as a family holiday. Not like it's never done, just pretty uncommon.

A lot of people in Japan take time off work around New Year's even though it's not a national holiday.

For a famously workaholic nation they somehow seem to get more vacation time than the average American.

Is Sakurai part of NEET's uncle's branch of the family-- his aunt, or one of his niblings perhaps?

Sakurai is normally a surname. Probably some friends of his parents NEET hasn't seen since he was five.

I'm getting the suspicion that there is some awful vision or vortex or phenomenon or something lying ahead in the crime timeline NEET, such that whenever an eager young translator scans ahead to see what's coming, they are instantly vaporized into a cloud of microwaved natto fumes.

They may get more vacation time but the stigma of actually taking that time is cranked up to 100.

Sure, for random dates throughout the year, but using vacation time to extend your New Year's break and other major holidays is pretty accepted. Mostly because everyone else does it; sticking out is the major issue
