Yeah, if you try going to Doomsday Zone Act 1 it puts you at the giant penguin robot with 0 rings, but if you beat Death Egg Zone Act 2 you keep any rings you had. It ALSO doesn't reset the timer though, so it's very possible to take too long on Act 2/Act 2's boss and then time out on the final boss :v:

And if you happen to lose a life to the final boss you also have to do it again without rings on all subsequent ones.

Yeah it's very strange: the 3B controller shows up in windows and in Steam, and the Steam wrapper gets other controllers to work just fine.

Apparently you can get the mini controller to work by editing steam's config files, but all I got for editing mine was having to re-enter my password.

Personally my least favorite zone in 2 is Aquatic Ruins. I really do not like its aesthetic or design sensibilities. It's thankfully not too long or difficult, but it still sucks.
Funny, I was just playing through that in the port and thinking about how much I love the look of that level, and the idea you don't hit the water very often as you get better. The physics in the port work a lot better, whereas they're fucky at points in Chemical Plant, though. Then I jammed through a block in Casino Night and Sonic started jumping weird so I gave up for the night, have to get the updated version of the port I guess.

Everyone likes different stuff in Sonic. It's neat.

I forget, does Knuckles’ version of Big Arms in 3K use the same music or does it default to the general boss theme instead?

Big Arms doesn't exist at all if it's 3K, right? You just fight the tower/rocket eggmech and then go to Mushroom Hill.

If you’re playing as Knuckles you fight it at the end of Launch Base Act 2. For Sonic and Tails you can only fight it in vintage Sonic 3.

This also answers my question, it just plays the normal boss music unfortunately.

Yeah some stuff in Sonic 2 is a little jank in the port that I downloaded.

It also added Tails to my Knuckles file when I switched, then overwrote it with a Sonic and Tails file when I quit out. I'm assuming things will get a lot more stable once people actually build a proper exe out of this. And presumably that'll let me access the cheats that are in the mobile version.

I've been playing Sonic 2 Community Cut to compare it with the decompiled android port (I feel terrible for everyone who worked on S2CC for the timing of the android decompilation release).

It's really neat! There's a lot of options, from the style of the physics (you can have Sonic 2, 3&K, Mania or Joey style) to nitty gritty gameplay features (like adding the insta shield, peelout, elemental shields, homing attack, drop dash, define Tails' flying abilities) and cute little visual features like act transitions, afterimages when using the speed shoes, etc. It also retains the zone cards for Knuckles matching the color of his shoes, a feature that was glaringly absent in the android ports. The sheer level of customization really adds a lot to the experience.

Unfortunately there are a couple downsides. Since it's running off a rom instead of being made from scratch, some physics glitches and general Genesis jank occasionally turn up. There's also no save game functionality of any sort right now, though it's supposed to get added later. This is a feature inherent in the Steam release via the way its emulator works so it's kind of annoying to have it missing. You can easily access level select during regular play so there is that. And the most annoying issue of all right now is that the bonus stages, while sped up to run at 60FPS, are still the original hideous 4:3 fake 3D ones, although that is also supposedly being worked on.

https://twitter.com/heyjoeway/status/1288217795810021377

I'm curious to see if this version or the android ports will be the ones modders build on from now on. Either way, it seems like there won't be a reason to ever play the original 4:3 30fps version of Sonic 2 in the future (unless you're a speedrunner).

I didn’t get round to beating Sonic 2 without savestates until the day before Mania released. I’ll probably never bother getting all the emeralds because I can’t stand those special stages.

I prefer Sonic 1, but there‘a a few things I do to smooth over the rough parts. Versions with the spindash make labyrinth zone much more bearable and you can skip most of Scrap Brain act 3 with the shortcut. Or just use level select I guess

I was under the impression that heyJoeWay was moving their efforts over to the Decomp team and whatever improvements Community Edit had will, eventualy, find their way to Decomp in whatever the ultimate form of that will be.

Infact, I have to commend the fact that the dood did that poo poo talk (ie: that bit where they destroyed an iphone for the bit) and took the news that they got gazumped like a champ. You see so much drama around that it's refreshing to see that.

I've come to the conclusion that the correct way to play Sonic 2 is to play up to and including Mystic Cave Zone, say "that was great! weirdly easy final boss, though", and then next time you play just start over at Emerald Hill.

I guess Hidden Palace being added to the mobile might add something to that, need to try it out.

I always get crushingly depressed and bored when I hit Oil Ocean and say "gently caress this". I really like Sonic 2 up to Mystic Cave zone too, and then I really need to do something else.

What are you running this on? I have both a 144/2k gaming machine and a good ol' thinkpad and it runs like broken garbage, both in browser and as an exe. AIR and the decomp ports both run flawlessly, other than the latter having the odd bug or two.

I wanted to try it to see if it'll get the genesis mini controller working, which it does but... Only through a browser? Controllers make no sense on PC, it's amazing.

Apparently early in development it was supposed to be a completely separate zone called Genocide City but it got scrapped and turned into another Metropolis stage (Wood Zone from the beta version may have been part of the same area at one point as well).

I really enjoyed Metropolis Zone. The music is great, the big nuts are another momentum-based challenge, and it's hard in a way that doesn't involve any bottomless pits.

I found Wing Fortress zone hardest because it's really tough to do as Super Sonic, due to him sliding around more, and it's one big bottomless pit. I'm surprised to see people griping about Aquatic Ruin, because it slides by incredibly quickly unless you're constantly falling down into the water. You can beat the whole pair of levels while barely skimming the top of the water.
