I'd love to have a dog but I really would like to have a house with a yard (normal fence or invisible) so that if for what ever reason I can't take the dog out for a long walk I can at least let it run around in the yard / toss a ball around for it to chase.

My wife and I wanted a dog for years but lived in an apartment in the bay area. A dog was top priority when we got a house.

Speaking of dogs and space to run, I have everything but the bench for my home gym setup that I have on the patio (the bench comes today, barbell came friday). Playing with your dog between sets >>>> *

Haha, this did not work for me. I had two cats for about 9 years, and one cat would simply just terrorize the other one. They'd usually get into fights once or twice a day that I would have to break apart. Squirt bottles did nothing to stop the male cat from going after the female. The male cat had to be put down about 5 years ago. Now my issue is that my cat will randomly walk around the house loudly talking for an hour straight until she finally settles down next to the vent for 6 hours.

I'm honestly ready to be cat free, but I'm not going to give my cat away, and she seems in decent health. She's 16 years old, so she could die this year, or live for like 5 more.

Explain this to me like I’m five please.

Did some Reddit dork just make a post saying “lul wouldn’t it be fun if we all invested in GameStop”?

Gamestop is completely hosed, and is one of the most short-sold stocks because of that.

Shorting a stock is when you say, I think the stock is going to be worth less sometime in the future. Basically saying I 'll sell you this stock I don't have now at the current price and promise to buy it by a fixed date. When you're wrong, you can lose... infinite dollars if the price keeps going up. The way to prevent losing everything is if the stock starts climbing, you buy it at the current price just to lock in your losses.

That subreddit had a bunch of people go... let's all buy Gamestop and cause the price to jump up, this will cause all the short sellers, and there's a lot of them, to need to buy the stock to limit their losses, and it's caused a run on the stock.

Hot Diggity! posted:

Yeah, the other part to this is that for the most part it isn't humans making the transactions. Every mid-sized and up financial firm runs all this poo poo through software that's making the decisions at the microsecond level and is constantly buying and selling.

Thankfully technically one of the cats isn't mine. (Even though I feed her, and give her almost all of the attention she gets, and she follows me around.)

But when I move out eventually I'll probably get another one.

I have no idea how people own cats though.

Literally every cat owner I know tells an endless stream of stories about their cats being unimaginably destructive shitheads.

“Fluffy tore down the curtains, poo poo on my pillow and chewed off my baby’s nose yesterday, what a stinker, I love him!” :swoon:

We live out in the country, and have a bit of a mouse issue. Our cat is phenomenal at catching them (and shrews/voles too), and I think he actually eats the mice as well :barf:

When we lived in an apartment a couple years back he used to be really bad about chewing cords (phone chargers, laptop cables, whatever) and pissing in the kitchen sink, so it could be just having more space and stuff to do now.

I'm not down with the destructive stuff, but he's generally really affectionate with us so I would let the bad behavior slide lol

We've been house shopping here and there over the past month or so and our landlord likes to mention how "rentable" every house that we view is, as if we're planning to rent it out someday. Like I get that a house is an investment but let me think about how I want to live there before I start worrying about letting other people live there.

Investing in mutual funds like Vanguards VTSAX is one thing. Investing in individual stocks is just modified gambling. GME is a prime example of how you can make the extremely rational choice to short the stock, and then have it go completely upside down on you because the stock market is rarely rational.

I'm perfectly ok being in the stock market, despite generally being a socialist. Unless our society rapidly changes how it works, being in the market is one of the few ways to not get completely left behind. I'd like to retire one day and not be dependent on social security. Your other choices are not exactly any morally better. Buy real estate? Be a landlord? Ok, those aren't really much better. If you have a pension, then you are indirectly owning stocks too. It's pretty much impossible to get away from.

In short, the guy who made Chewy a big success and viable competitor to Amazon for pet food got on board with Gamestop creating some buzz and a future plan for profit, while a bunch of people posting on reddit put their life savings into option calls on it, while investment banks/big monied interests doubled down on their short positions until they couldn't anymore and got "squeezed" to infinity making the share price also squeeze up.

e: the entire thing is a really good example on why there should maybe be some regulations or limitations on short positions but they'll probably just make it more difficult for normal people to speculate
