Maybe don't short a stock that already has 140% of the float shorted next time

Just means about 250 shares at $97/each.

Since the full float was already well shorted, aren't you admitting to knowingly taking out a naked short position which is incredibly illegal?

And you come here expecting sympathy? :eyepop:

I’m pretty drat new to this poo poo. How is the whole r/wallstreetbets thing with GME any different from a pump and dump? Every time I go in there and see a new stock being announced for a rocket trip to the moon, I feel like I’m looking at a pyramid scheme.

From deepfuckingvalue's last update I don't think this is accurate, but hey I'm sure there's plenty of other WSBers with loving in the name.

BUT, DFV did hold 50,000 shares all the way up to 150 and back down to 75. If that's not commitment I dunno what is

A pump and dump is when you buy up shares, then yell at a large audience "this poo poo's gonna go to the moon!" When the audience starts buying, the price goes up, and you pick a point to sell your shares. The selling is the dump.

The GME buyers aren't individual or a small coordinated group of actors, it's group mania, and a lot of em are holding on principle instead of selling for profit

In the sense that we had a short signal on the stock in our portfolio model, we discussed it because of the squeeze action, and decided it was worth the risk. Selling at 97.56 and buying at 76.79 was worth the risk ultimately.

No, we can locate most equities to borrow and short through our broker. They may have actually internalized it with someone else in the firm with a long position. But generally we don't know for sure.

The bad part of a pump and dump is when you're actively lying about why you think the stock deserves to go up, thereby causing it to go up ONLY by tricking a bunch of rubes.

In this situation people have been making the case for the GME short squeeze for like a year, and it's finally coming time to see how it hashes out. There may be fallout if enough big money people can make the case that it's purely "predatory" speculation or something like that but there is absolutely value in short sellers getting hosed.

EDIT: And I definitely think a lot of the other hot meme stocks on WSB are being pumped in stupid ways. A lot of people are probably not doing any fraud and are just blindly optimistic, but they're looking at the GME situation and just imagining it's the new normal somehow which is just bonkers.

How long does a stoploss generally take to trigger & fill?

Basically, I am wondering how fast a stock's value would need to decline in order to get badly burned. Say I purchase some stock with a 10% trailing stoploss -- how fast does the price need to decline to cause me to fail to sell at roughly -10% on a dip and instead sell at -20%? -30%? Etc.

It happens unfortunately. You roll the dice and take your chances. Plus, you can get stop loss raided and watch in horror as the price bounces right back up.

This is why I typically set multiple price alerts and watch my babies closely.

I didn't even know they were publicly traded, but 40x earnings for "Tootsie Roll, Tootsie Pop, Charms Blow Pop, DOTS, Andes Mints, Sugar Daddy, Charleston Chew, Dubble Bubble, Razzles, Caramel Apple Pop, Junior Mints, Cella's Chocolate-Covered Cherries, Nik-L-Nip" seems excessive, what the hell. I wouldn't think there is a lot of growth opportunity in old-rear end candy.

I do see two guys trying to pump it on WSB, but that doesn't seem like enough to really move it.

That's kind of what I was getting at, which is some incredulity at where these squeezes are coming from - ostensibly from reddit and robinhood - and how quickly information travels to the wealth of investors ready with the click of a button on their phones to buy in.

The Intel hack

We talked on Friday about how Intel Corp. had to release its quarterly earnings early—roughly 12 minutes early—because someone had hacked into its computer systems and gotten an early look at an infographic containing its main earnings results. But that was perhaps overstating it. Intel, it turns out, was not really hacked. What happened was simpler and dumber. Intel puts its earnings releases up on its own website using predictable file names. Byrne Hobart explains:

quote:

Intel had an infographic for their Q3 earnings, in a file that ended with "Q3_2020_Infographic.pdf" and had a URL with a sequential numbering scheme. Q4’s earnings presentation had the same file naming scheme, so it was easy to guess.
