Endless Mike posted:Technically, the word Billy says is an acronym, so it should stylized "SHAZAM" (or perhaps "S.H.A.Z.A.M." if you have a weirdo styleguide). Even more technically, it's a backronym since Shazam worked backwards from his name. Don't have to capitalize the letters, like scuba or *Dr. Evil voice* "laser."

I like how the first one is clearly based on Greek myth, but then they just sort of gave up when it came to the O and went with Norse mythology. Was it really that hard to think of Odysseus? Also using the Roman variant Neptune is lame too, but a bit harder to fix. maybe substitute that by Nereus and you can even keep the water thing going, if you really love the idea of depth. Velma's list is sort of a wild mixture of various badass ladies which are somewhat obscure and I can appreciate that. I think I spent more time on that than the writer of the whole comic. Also once I am at it. Apparently Shazam stands for Solomon - Wisdom Hercules - Strength Atlas - Stamina Zeus - Power Achilles - Courage Mercury - Speed That has the exact same problem as Shaggys thing, to a point where it feels intentional and it's odd, but weirdly appropriate, that Zeus is two-timing.

muscles like this! posted:So this is an example of how phrases change over time. While there were recorded uses of the phrase "making love" as a euphemism for sex in the 20s at the time it was more commonly used for something closer to flirting. Reminds me of It's a Wonderful Life where Donna Reed calls out to her mother that George is "violently making love" to her. I always read it as sarcasm, but TIL.

Inanna / Ishtar's the odd one, because Inanna wasn't anything even close to resembling a goddess of love. She was the Queen of Heaven, goddess of civilization, the ruler of the gods, and was much more akin to Zeus (except her crime of choice was theft). Mesopotamian mythology is really interesting. It might be a reference to the famous flop of a film, I think that was at least partially a rom com, but I watched like half of it when I was 10 on comedy central, so I don't know.

I would say it's more probably simply a half-remembered Classics class that went over cultural connections between Ishtar and Aphrodite.

Eventually, but all her earliest myths portray her as the goddess of sex which tends to get sanitized as love in the Victorian times when most of the translations were done. Her earliest myth is about her pleading with her brother to escort her to the underworld to taste the fruit of passion and assume the domain promised to her.
