According to whois they're going through Linode nameservers so they're at least running on a cloud provider now. When I was messing around with writing a web scraper I noticed that their HTTP responses from a few months back changed. They used to just report an old, security hole ridden version of nginx. Around when their certificate expired HTTP responses started exposing that they're running on Ubuntu and a more modern release of nginx. They likely moved providers and had to move their entire setup to whatever operating system Linode offers to their customers. Depending on the traffic + load running the site puts on a VM they could get some cheap plan and likely save some money in lieu of running physical hardware in a datacenter. With the advent of public cloud providers this is an incredibly common pattern. Even if they went with Linode's maximum shared plan JR would still be raking in $340k a year after you subtract out what they would pay for running their server in the cloud.

Sorry to sperg out, but the shorter version is: JR's son doesn't have to drive anywhere now with the wonders of modern infrastructure. If they claim they have to physically drive anywhere to restart something it's a lie. I'm curious if they'll continue to bust that excuse out the next time freep has some technical difficulties.

I have seen those videos. I have always questioned how a car engine can be turned to molten metal like a stream of mercury when the tree right next to the car had no burn marks on it and did not catch fire.
