um excuse me posted:Nah. It's my understanding that you should pay ~$4000 in good condition. It's way more than the $2100 I paid for mine but, well, look at my post history in this thread. Coredump posted:Used car prices shot up over the last year due to people getting off public transport due to covid. At the same time sports cars went up more as its was something people could do socially distanced. I've watch Miata, BRZ, and Corvette prices go up. I shouldn't have stumbled back into this thread. The want for a Miata grows stronger. I regret letting the (now ex) wife make me sell it for a "reasonable" car.

It's not nearly as bad of a financial decision as getting a fancy 96 month loan on a corvette or something like that. Just buy it and if you suddenly can't afford it, you can probably get what you paid for all day long.

I scored my NB for $1800 but it has 180,000 miles, worn out top, mismatched fender and hood, and body damage to the front from an impact. But I was wanting a project so I've definitely got one now. IMO the main reason a miata is never a bad financial decision is that there isn't anything on it that can really ruin you. Like you could probably get an entire junkyard drivetrain for under $1000, tons of cheap and expensive aftermarket parts, etc. This isn't like when the IMS blows up on you 911 and you have to eat only ramen for a year.Cat Hatter posted:Weird, its one of the most common services at Autozone and Advance Auto behind "can you ring this up?" and "could you install these windshield wipers while its still monsooning outside?" Might have to ask though.

There are a couple bugaboo parts on the miata that get get expensive. For instance, the idle air controller is $400 on a 1995. Mine's getting sticky so my idle will hang for 15-30 seconds after coming to a stop before dropping down. Steering racks for NAs that aren't leaking from every seal are getting rare as rocking horse poo poo, and the rebuilds leak worse. Tops are always expensive to replace, and hardtops are a real pain in the rear end to find in the USA. That being said, I haven't driven mine much after putting so much time and work into rebuilding it, because I just don't really care for it anymore. I'm trying to justify keeping it because I spent so much on it's restoration, but I just have moved on as a person from motorsports. I'm not 25 anymore, the exhaust is too loud, it rides too rough, it's loud in general, and I'm not interested in changing my own gears anymore. A road pillow seems so much more interesting to me.

I get where you are coming from - I have 3 (manual) cars, an '18 Civic Si, an '07 Yaris, and a modded out '95 Miata with a full suspension, exhaust, the works - I really wouldn't mind getting something like a crown vic or lexus LS just for cruising around or doing big highway miles - even the Yaris has a ton of road noise, and if I'm not bombing down back roads, who gives a poo poo if I'm driving stick. I'll probably keep the miata forever just because it's not worth anything if I sell it since it's got a salvage title, and it's super fun on back roads, but gently caress taking trips in that thing, my head is pounding after ~2 hours.

Yeah I plan to get a set of earplugs for mine. It’s not especially loud but from riding a motorcycle I’ve learned wind noise can creep up on you around 60 and next thing you know you come home with ringing ears. Currently my main driver is a Honda Element. I missed having a small sporty car since I sold my s14.

Just use musician earplugs. They're for lowering sound levels across the frequency spectrum (flat response) without actually eliminating sounds like ear plugs. They're like $10-40. I have a set in all of my loud cars (all of them )

Welp. After twelve years and 120,000 miles of valiant service, my battery has succumbed to the cold temperatures and the fact that I only drive my poor Miata 20 minutes a week. I'm going to grab an AGM replacement, I think. The only thing I can find anywhere near me is a Super Start Platinum from O'Reilly, so I guess that will have to do. I don't see any horror stories online anywhere and it sounds like most AGM batteries are made by the same few companies and just rebranded and sold?

It probably won’t be 12 more years before you head back to O’Reilly’s, but yeah, they’re all the same batteries these days, so what else can you do?

I'm sure it's heresy on this forum, but I replaced my lovely duracell branded (same as every other AGM of the size) battery with a yellowtop optima D51R that's slightly taller than the original. I bought some generic battery hold down j-hooks and cut them to length then did the needful. It spins my direct drive starter (not the gear reduction ones the NB got) like a banshee. I killed that stupid duracell like 3 times before I replaced the alternator and so on. This battery is worth the cost imho.

I’d definitely rather have paid more for a better battery. Maybe I’ll try that after this O’Reilly’s special dies and its warranty replacement also dies. Winter after next, I guess.

Anyone know of an easy to install and not unattractive way to add permanent USB ports to an NB without replacing the cigarette lighter port? To elaborate: I'm thinking I want to yank out the existing (aftermarket) head unit I have and put in a double-DIN model with wireless Android Auto. All the ones I'm looking at come with extension cables for their rear USB ports. I'd love to put them someplace convenient and usable, but installing a stereo with a Crutchfield kit is about the limit of my tool-using skill, so I'm not keen on taking a hole saw to my console. I think I could live with mounting something like this cable from Crutchfield but with the ports spread our parallel to the mounting surface, so that the entire thing would be like a centimeter high. It seems like an obvious idea but I haven't found it at Crutchfield or Amazon, which leaves me wondering if there's an even cooler idea that I'm missing. I'm also considering just punting and just routing the cords to the glovebox or something. At least that way I wouldn't be doing permanent damage to anything.

What will you be plugging into them and how often? I stuck my extension into the glovebox so I can use a USB drive for music storage, but just ended up playing it directly from my phone over bluetooth.

If my phone's battery gets low, I'd like to be able to plug it in. That shouldn't happen often but I can't rule it out. For anything else I have in mind, glove box is probably fine.

But I think some people also mount the extension in the armest storage thingie (where the trunk release is) and just had to cut out a little hole for the port. Pretty nice since you can actually store the phone there, but of course it wouldn't be easily accessible. Do you have heated seats? If those button are blanks, that could be space to put the port. Zorak of Michigan posted:Anyone know of an easy to install and not unattractive way to add permanent USB ports to an NB without replacing the cigarette lighter port? You can route a usb extender either to the center console or have dangle behind the seat a little bit. The console itself is only held in with a few screws and it's not an airtight fit between the carpet and the plastic, so pinching a $7 cable is unlikely and even if it happens you're only out $7 and an hour's worth of work.

Here's some pics of my heap finally. These are the "before" pics: You can see the monumental bodge the PO did. However the damage underneath from the collosion looks to be very minimal and I have a front clip to pull straight metal off of. Also have a used bumper and fender in the appropriate shade of white ready to go on as well. Replacement top is sitting inside waiting to go on, just waiting on my rollbar to get shipped and I'll get those items installed as well.
