This is somewhat related to Canada and finances: some of my Grade 12 students were wondering if they are able to draw EI while still attending high school next semester. Is this possible?

Right... they would be in school, unable to look for a job during that time. I guess if a job came up they could just... drop out?

Are you sure? It says actively seeking employment not full-time employment.

ESDC posted:

You may be entitled to Employment Insurance (EI) regular benefits if you:

-were employed in insurable employment;
-lost your job through no fault of your own;
-have been without work and without pay for at least seven consecutive days in the last 52 weeks;
-have worked for the required number of insurable employment hours in the last 52 weeks or since the -start of your last EI claim, whichever is shorter; Temporary COVID-19 relief
-are ready, willing and capable of working each day;
-are actively looking for work (you must keep a written record of employers you contact, including when you contacted them).

Bolding mine. Each day does not necessarily mean each day from 9 to 5.

Full-time past employment is not an eligibility criterion. according to ESDC, "You only need 120 insured hours to qualify for benefits because you’ll get a one-time credit of 300 insured hours to help you meet the required 420 insured hours of work."

The form you fill out every two weeks specifically asks and says you cannot collect as a student. There are programs that are exceptions, but they are mostly for prospective college students that just lost a job.

I did collect for a time but no longer do, so I forgot all the text. Some of these kids are being told that they CAN collect, I'm trying to avoid them all from breaking the rules. My research also shows programs in place for college students, nothing for high school students.

this is what the bi-weekly report asks you

quote:

You will be asked the following question: "Were you ready, willing and capable of working each day, Monday through Friday, during each week of this report?"

If you were not available for work or you were not looking for work for any reason (for example, you were sick, injured or away on vacation), you must answer “no.” You will be asked which days you were not available. You must also report if you leave Canada for any reason.

you would have a hard time saying yes if you are in high school 8 hours a day

Professor Shark posted:

you might be able to convince a service canada person that you can drop out any time I guess, they should really try calling in and seeing if that works rather than the automated process

:lesnick::lesnick::lesnick::lesnick::lesnick::lesnick:

Easy solution for high-school students to collect EI is to attend part time. If classes claim up to 40 hours a week, take half the classes. Lots of people work 60+ hours out there, so 20 hours school and 40 hours looking for work. Bingo bongo.
