I've been digging around for a place that will do this for a while now, but none of the facilities I've spoken with will admit to giving out unclaimed doses, and are claiming 100% takeup rates - which is ridiculous, obviously, but I understand why they're not admitting to having doses going to waste to some rando on the phone. I don’t think it’s official at all, just people on the scene literally pulling an audible to not let vaccine go to waste.

I suppose now I need to weigh the benefits of getting vaccinated in a timely fashion against the risk of getting infected by going all over town to areas where sick people congregate. It'd be easier to go with the flow if I could at least get into an online queue or something, but the total radio silence other than "Some Time Later" is maddening.

When my dog was a young'n we'd go to the dog park every evening, and at some point an older Japanese woman started taking her puppy Prince. She had this.... I dunno air about her that really made me think she hung out with my grandmother. Sure enough, one day she comes up to me and says "I bowl with your grandma!" Figures.

Comedy option: Newsom appoints Boxer as a caretaker and she decides to try to run for re-election. In all seriousness, Gavin, because replacing him as governor with a progressive option seems a bit more likely to me than trying to get a senator who would be any further to the left than him.

I mean Newsom has really bungled the later half of this COVID response but the first half seemed pretty decent and everything else he's been on "good" to "meh" so yeah, no GOP please.

The Senate would actually be a really good landing place for Gavin, but the problem is he has always wanted more than that. The whole problem is that he wants to lead and he’s a lovely leader. Not every politician is a leader, but he likes executive privileges and any office where you travel in a caravan of vehicles with tinted Windows. I remember when he was Mayor and he had some secured vehicle double parked outside City Hall. The SF Mayor doesn’t need a Secret Service lookalike car, but he had one and parked it illegally because he’s better than you.

There were cases of people having to wait two months between appointments and getting pressure to have very short appointments too. They've gotten fined by state regulators before for having such poor access. Again, this surprises me because my Kaiser therapist and psychiatrist have been excellent and I've never had major trouble getting an appointment. Like I said, I'm not claiming you're wrong. I wonder if I just lucked out or it's a regional thing and Kaiser in San Diego has better quality of care than most.

Kaiser misdiagnosed my grandmother in-law cancer as "just some pain don't worry" in various x-rays and ct scans. Only when it got too bad and was discovered on another place as having spread to whole body they decided to... send her to another hospital. She died, and they been trying to stop my in-law parents from suing because of "binding arbitration" even though it doesn't apply to them as the one dead was the one that signed the binding arbitration. If anyone with Kaiser does end up testing positive for covid, make sure you ask for their covid kit if they don't offer it to you. They'll send you a big box full of masks and sanitation supplies.

Asked again a couple years later and was given 'approval' to just start reaching out to random therapists I could find on the internet and find out if they accepted this other insurance company that Kaiser was somehow 'sub insuring' through? Kaiser > other insurance > find your own therapist. It went spectacularly well calling 50 therapists and getting zero calls back. Norcal and Socal Kaiser seem like 2 different beasts from my experience.

Yeah, I made an appointment to see a therapist when I moved back to San Diego five or six years ago and I've been going to appointments at his office ever since. Bing bang so simple. I've had nothing but good luck with Kaiser doctors of all sorts, so hearing these stories is making me really, really, confused. When I tried to get a therapist through Kaiser I got an initial screening appointment pretty quickly, but trying to get a regular scheduled appointment after that resulted in six months of run around before I gave up. But when I broke my finger I got a bunch of follow-ups and physical therapy no problem. Seems to be luck of the draw, mostly.

Kaiser has the best trans healthcare because apparently one of their higher-ups came out a few years ago and whoops, suddenly they started caring a bunch about the quality of their services to that demographic Kaiser behavioral health is a whole nother beast though. I had one appointment with a Kaiser therapist that was ah, not loving helpful and I will never go back. Also my answer to the Feinstein hypothetical is that I groan loudly and throw things in the general direction of the California electorate

Is changing your primary hard with Kaiser? I have kaiser and really haven't had to do that. But I have a friend who desperately needs to change their primary (not Kaiser. It is medi-cal, cal-optima) and the only way they will change her primary is if they change ALL of her specialists that she needs, including her therapist. Would this happen on the kaiser model?

My sole experience - thankfully secondhand - with Kaiser was a high school friend getting fed incredibly strong pot brownies without his knowledge, so he ate a shitload of them before realizing what they contained. He got Way Too High and someone called him an ambulance, which he expressly refused before they arrived, after they'd arrived, while they were carting him into the ambulance as he feebly struggled and protested, and during his overnight stay at the hospital after they called the cops. He was on his parents' Kaiser insurance for this. Coverage was refused for nearly everything, and he was still helping his parents pay off those bills a decade later. Kaiser: Not Even Once.
