If I had to pick 1 primer nowadays I'm going grey. Being a lighter. Plot allows you to do some really cool poo poo wish washes etc. Black sucks for painting a lot of colors, and if you need dark crevices you can always wash with a black or brown.

Now, if your doing a dark scheme or something that's mainly metal, then go black spray

I painted all my Kharadron troops grey, black Templar then painted each mini with leadbelcher and that necron drybrush paint. Then I just glaze or wash colour onto it. Takes no time at all and I reckon they look amazing. Glazing was new to me last year and now I use it all the time.

Works especially well with the grey primer and black or brown wash.

The Necrons head is one of the two options that you get with the Lokhust Heavy Destroyer. But it's just the face panel so I had to roll up a small ball of greenstuff to make the rest of its head and give the neck something to kind of attach to.

I paid him in full, and even got completion photos from him

but I never got my stage. Apparently he had a breakdown or something? And a bunch of other excuses? I'm ok with him needing time to address his mental health, and he even reached back out after he had lost access to his work email, and like, all his poo poo had fallen apart, but he never shipped me anything. I even bought a bunch of other scenery off him at the time to help his old lady get over the flu or something, some kinda help out. I'm not even mad at this point, because it's been a few years now. (I started in 2018 trying to get it, he was done by mid that year, by Jan 2019, I heard from him one last time, saying he'd get it crated and shipped, and that was it.) I'm out 600 to him for custom work I never saw. But it would have been sick as gently caress to have as a companion piece to the minis, which are rare and expensive.

:monocle: holy poo poo tht stage rules! I had no idea there were GWAR minis! That really stinks you got screwed on that, especially after being given pictures. It reminds me of my friend who got me into hams that painted a noise marine squad to look like the Misfits.

Edit: Just looked up his previous work and his terrain is stunning. He was lauded as one of the best terrain makers around too.

I'd like to try painting black armor so my goal is to prime black, apply a white zenithal and then apply 6 or 8 layers of very thinned down Corvus Black / German grey ; so the light reflection would work through transparency hopefully. Would that work? I believe I should let each layer fully dry, would 20 minutes be enough between each?

I finished painting a warband for Frostgrave, then completely botched taking pictures of most of them, so I'll post all the normal soldiers sometimes tomorrow. They're already varnished, so my camera is picking up the dusty look and I hate it.

The wizard, a Doomseeker from The Other Side.

just got my order from darksword miniatures and i want to paint but im pretty sure i have to clean my airbrushes to prime and i hate that. i leave them submerged in a rinse cup of airbrush cleaner, water, and old paint and this strategy has served me well for a couple of months but i think my luck is running out.

anyone have a recommendation for a cheap enough airbrush i can just throw away every 2 months instead of cleaning?

Is there a harbor freight near you? They have a pretty garbage compressor, but the brush is a bit better when hooked up to something with a pressure regulator. I think they even do a 6 pack of the airbrushes.

i have a badger compressor and a patriot 105 and a renegade velocity (this one i use 99% of the time) currently. ill buy one of those harbor freight ones and just see if it works well enough for zenithal priming because that's the vast majority of what i use the airbrushes for.

I recently watched this video about the ~$10 Harbor Freight Airbrush. It looks like it would be a decent enough option for priming and maybe basecoating. It comes with 5 color cups so once you use them all you could just get another one.

It's not the cheapest of cheap brushes, but I'm a big fan of the Paasche H, with the additional side-cup. What makes it great is it's dead loving simple to operate and disassemble, is built like a tank, and you can clean it in about 10 seconds flat. The parts are so chunky that there are no fiddly bits to disassemble, and it's single-action external mix, which means there is no inside of the airbrush to get dirty or gently caress the seals up. All you do is basically slide that cone shaped bit out, give it a swab, and done. It's perfect for priming, basing, varnishing, anything you don't want to mess your prime airbrush up with.

And really, it's a decent airbrush overall. It's primitive by todays standards, but it was the brush used to paint the Predator and Alien suits, Jurassic Park animatronics, Terminator makeup, basically all the effects work done on films in the 80's and 90's, and still up to this day. Pros love it because it's dead simple, and it get the job done. Cheap too, I've seen it as low as $30 from time to time. There are kits of to with more options and features if needed, but the lone brush and a side-cup with do everything you need it to.

I own one of these, it's basically like having infinite rattlecans on hand, in any color you have.

Note that it's single action, external mix, so don't try doing anything fancy with it, these are strictly for broad strokes and basecoats.
