2016 was in the height of a presidential election.

Plus, after everything that's happened in the last few months, who are the people that weren't obsessed with Qanon that are going to pick it up? Where is the person in the wake of an attempted coup is going to center their political identity around this?

edit* now yes of course it'd be better if the DCCC actually focused on how they could make people's lives better but lol the dems

You don't understand qanon in 2021. It's literally whatever you want it to be as long as you are disaffected with a healthy distrust for power. Pick an entry point. Saving kids. Anti vaxx. Voting irregularities. Literally all entry points for Qanon

Deplorable was also something hillary said once. *this is going to be the dccc's focus*

Just to add on to this: a very large number of americans do not look at the invasion of the capitol building as "an attempted coup" - they believe the election was stolen, and see it as a sadly failed patriotic effort to rescue the country from a coup.

However incredibly stupid that is, and it's really incredibly stupid, it's the world we're in right now.

I think the reason people won't pick up QAnon - if that's the case, and I'm not convinced - is that the foundational theory of QAnon was that an anonymous member of Trump's executive branch was leaking the secret plans within the Trump admin to do <whatever> and fix America, all as part of this secret super clever plan to thwart the Deep State.

But obviously all those people are out of power now. Who would Q still be?

But "QAnon" is, as Spoeank explains, more of a coalescing of people around a central idea, and that idea is "utter bullshit conspiracy theory as a substitute for sane politics". And that is absolutely not gone, not even significantly diminished, and if it rallies around the increasingly meaningless "QAnon" label, or some other label, doesn't matter that much. What matters is that anyone who just dismisses it as silly or irrelevant is being extremely foolish.

There is a ton of righteous pent-up frustration and anger in this country. It manifested in part last week as a pump-and-dump of Gamestop stock, which, lol, but also a warning that frustration being vented in goofball kinda alarming ineffective but still people get hurt ways is not the sole province of the left, center, or right, it's endemic in the country, and politicians should take it seriously on both sides of the aisle.

On that basis: Democrats calling Republicans "the party of QAnon" is absolutely not the own that they think it is. It's alienating to the substantial minority of their own base that voted for Trump because of this desperate grasping for literally anyone who seems to be giving them an answer - however manipulative, dishonest, racist, or batshit it might be - to what they perceive as the grinding destruction of America. They might as well call republicans "the party of believing that the system is corrupt and broken."

What the Dems ought to be doing is drumming on "we're the party that actually acknowledges the system is corrupt and broken, without couching that in endless racism and lies." But, you know, snappier, shorter. I'm not a marketing genius.

one of the first things I saw this morning was the NCAA EA Sports College Football news, which is very good news that improved on a weird/bad day yesterday.

I was happy/sad/heartened to read everyone's "how we doin' in the pandemic" posts earlier, very late to the party but we're doing about as well as possible. Two people working full time from a 700 sq ft two-ish bedroom apartment isn't great, but we're getting through it, and my job has gotten a lot better since changing departments from September.

we're trying to have a baby, we're trying to look for a place to buy, my wife wants to change her job, I'm going to get my poo poo together to apply for the Japanese equivalent of a green card (which should help with that 'buying housing' part), and I'm trying to go run more regularly to stay in shape.

but on the other hand, it's tough and I'm missing family. the last time I saw any of my family in person was...end of September 2019, when my sister left after visiting. last time I saw my dad was early that same month when my mom passed away. I really wanted to get to visit last year, but, well...not really a smart idea. I'm really glad the missus and I did a decent amount of traveling in 2019, I just hope we can do something like that again sooner than later.

There's two parts to that.

The 1st is that yes, people that fall for cults tend to be wealthier, better educated, and generally going through a major life transition. So think of your wealthy empty nesters, or newly divorced MAGA dads, or someone who say has gone through a huge pandemic and has been stuck at home and their entire way of life has collapsed.

But the education signifier is different. I don't think upper education really signifies a lot anymore. Like I can go to a bible college and get an MBA from phoenix university and never once get forced think critically. I'd like to see the breakdown of what that upper education actually entailed.

Also, going off what spoeank said, q anon is basically an umbrella for so much poo poo that claiming you believe in Q doesn't really mean much. Any poll that's going to try to find this is going to have to do some digging. Is q believer a "wayfair smuggling kids" person or a "rfk is alive" person. Because of the internet all the various crazies have come togehter, have started recruiting other lonely people, and are selling shirts.

It's amazing what they can do with computers these days.

How many people actually believe in any of these various conspiracy theories though? I think we’re inflating how many people actually believe any of the Q poo poo.

I think the Dems labeling the GOP as the party of Q isn’t necessarily a bad move, but the better move is to actually pass things people want. The Dems have run on, “we’re not as bad as the GOP” for a long time now, and it has mixed results, to say the least.

FizFashizzle
Mar 30, 2005

There are just so many things that can lead into it, and once you're in you quickly fall into any other thing.

Believe Wayfair trafficked children?
Believe Hillary Clinton had someone killed?
Believe career bureaucrats were working against Donald Trump?
Believe Tom Brady's super bowls are legitimate?
Believe the dead voted in Georgia?

Any of these things can lead a person into the center, which is where they end up going to every other one. And how can you tell them they're wrong? There is thousands of hours of youtube videos they can watch about these things. Facebook groups with untold numbers of people. It's a gigantic community now. the only way to break it at this point is shutting down facebook and youtube about it.

Nobody who's ever been in a cult has been talked out of said cult by people "hey you're in a cult dummy". At the same time I don't think it's 100% comparable to the deplorable insult from 2016, because unlike 2016 the group in question has already more or less coalesced and we know exactly what they are.

They have an opportunity, right now, to pivot a bit, embrace a version of trump messaging (e.g., "the system is corrupt and stupid and isn't working for americans") but with actual honesty and not being actually about personal glorification and grift.
