The Perfect Score and Cellular both came out the same year and I think Cellular was really where Evans broke through for real. It didn't make huge money or anything, but it was successful and had some big stars in it and he was the lead. I definitely didn't know his name until that movie, then like a year later he got the role in Fantastic Four.

I've been sitting here for 5 mins trying to think of a joke to make but I just realised the animators of Mass Effect already did it for me

I remember seeing the previews for Cellular and thinking "who is this guy?" and didn't even connect him with being Chris Evans until just now.

Cellular is the movie with Kim Basinger and I think Jason Statham? I remember at least one trailer that gives away the entire movie.

Yea Cellular was one of those movies that came and went and has mostly been forgotten, but at the time it was actually a bit of a sleeper hit. It made around 60 million, which is like a little less than John Wick made, just for comparison.

The only reason I remember it is because I worked at a one-screen theater when it came out so I ended up seeing it like three times.

Wow, I think that's the first time i've ever seen more than two posts in a row about Sunshine anywhere on the internet that didn't devolve into STEMlords grousing about the central conceit of the film

It was my favorite "shooting for that 2001 vibe" movie before Interstellar, and the first film I bought on bluray. I'ma have to watch it again soon I guess!

Pft the concept of the film is totally fine. It's out there but it's not bonkers impossible. And even if it were who cares uggghh. You're allowed one thing that isn't real if it sets up the dang premise of the movie. Like The Martian. Windstorms like that on Mars can't knock over a rocket but let's all pretend they can so we can watch the loving movie.

I basically only heard of Sunshine as The Core 2: Solar Boogaloo, so while I liked The Core as a trashy disaster flick I never saw Sunshine.

Think I'll remedy that.

Sunshine is way, way better than The Core, even if the premises are similarly stupid scientifically.

It's definitely the part of the movie people criticize the most though. It feels a lot more Event Horizon(another very good movie that maybe falls just short of greatness) than 2001. It's a jarring shift.

I really hope it's not The Losers. That's the first role of his I saw him in that I loved him in.

The whole bit with him gaining entrance into the building through social engineering and his escape had me laughing so loving hard and I still use some of the lines from that bit.

Edit: Also I just rewatched The Core and it's still a fun romp that I in no way recommend people on any kind of "It's a good movie" level.

I don't know if it was pointed out here, or if I made the connection myself, but in Silence of the Lambs, talking about the case with Clarice is what helps Lecter escape - without talking in detail about how the case re. Buffalo Bill, he wouldn't have gotten the idea to remove the guard's face and thus being mistaken for him.

Not sure if that tops all the different companies that hold certain rights to the Wizard of Oz. The stage performance of Wicked has the actor wearing silver shoes that are then followed by a red spotlight to create the "ruby red slippers" because getting the rights to use them in performance after performance would be stupidly expensive.

EDIT: It's also one of the things that made Return to Oz in 1985 cost so much, Disney paid out the rear end to be able to use ruby red slippers in the movie.

That's hilarious, because in the book the slippers are silver already. The movie made them red to show off the Technicolor technology more, and that idea just stuck.

I don't know if the Wicked Witch was green in the books, but I do know that every time Disney's tried to make something that uses her, they use the closest shade of green they can get that's still legally distinct from the one in the original movie.

Since Marvel took a lot of liberties with who was related to who in Norse mythology, would the same issue occur if you wanted to make a movie with Thor and Loki as brothers or do the rules just cover visual imagery? Like if Disney gave Chris Hemsworth a Bob Ross fro instead of straight hair?

Yngwie Mangosteen
Aug 23, 2007

I think it's easy to make a movie or whatever about Norse mythical figures Thor and Loki. The closer your story gets to the Marvel "these guys are aliens, Thor is blonde and wears a cape, Loki is a literal supervillain. They hang out with a large green man named Hulk" the more likely they are to sue and then it's up to a court to determine if you crossed a line. Just making them brothers would probably not be close enough for Disney to win a suit but courts make stupid decisions all the time so who knows.
