For real tho, a lot of "toy hauler" RVs have that exact setup (minus the firepit) so I bet you could find aftermarket parts to build your own.

I may have a TimberShitter, but at least I don't leave half abandoned 10,000-gallon heating oil tanks in the ground to leak everywhere. This has been an absolute mess to clean up. It's been taking us all week.

Neither would the kitchen gazebo nor the workshop. Only thing that needs a permit are the MurderHaus. And they only need pier foundations. Not going to be doing any slabs either.

Everything about this thread tracks perfectly with everything I know about contractors and people who work in construction, particularly in rural areas. The old schoolhouse paid my grandfather to haul off their woodshed once they got a real heating system, and he proceeded to put it up on cinder blocks and live in it on and off for the next fifty years. He also had an outhouse, and I think legally his Troll Shack may actually have been considered a hunting camp. In the 90s he put in RV hookups for water and power and got a camper with a bathroom in it, so he could piss outside and drive the camper to the local campground intermittently to empty it out. This was only when he couldn't find a girlfriend he could scam into letting him live with her.

I don't remember the logic behind all these decisions--I think they involved permits and taxation and what qualifies as a permanent structure. But he could provably build a real and functional house, and was paid very well to do so, so I have to imagine something about the paperwork involved in building a house leads a certain type of person to spend a lot of time fantasizing about bizarre, elaborate workarounds.

So I have the title search for the land of MurderHaus, and the seller gave me contract papers but they list different law firms and such that are suppose to hold monies and such. Wondering if I should rewrite the contracts excluding the law firms, ask the law firms to follow through with the contracts, or contact my companies legal team to draft me a contract.

The sale is complicated because it's two parcels. One of the parcels needs split then combined with the other parcel.

The cost for the .75 acres is 10,000. Duder wants a 2-3k deposit and for me to pay the rest within 5 years. I'm just going to pay him $4000 and pay the rest off in a few months.

Yeah, you should get some lawyer or some title company to make sure they can sell it to you and no liens. I would think you should anyway...

Because Real Estate is Real Property in the eyes of the law and therefore literally more complicated than pretty much anything, for reasons that go back roughly 11,000 years. Some of the very very very first laws that writing was invented to convey that weren't about prostitution were about land ownership.

I am not smart enough when it comes to the legal aspects of land to tell you why it's more complicated. I'm just barely smart enough to tell you that it is. When you have a title company paid they have insurance so if someone comes along and says they couldn't sell that land to you because they already sold it to them then you're protected. I've bought a few houses in my time and have always paid for the title stuff.

My childhood spent in rural valleys of Oregon makes me see this and get incredibly curious what's under there. I used to find all sorts of cool (well, to me) poo poo in overgrown debris piles on farms or in the wilderness around my friends' houses. Old tractor parts, farm tools, random junk.

Only one instance of woods porn, though.

I spent some time lookin into woodfires in caravans, you need a chimney. There is no system for open fire that doesn't immediately need venting straight up, with insulation/ airgaps to prevent transfer of heat to combustible materials.
Also it's really important the chimney actually draws the gasses up and out. People die from co2 even with chimneys if they are not talk enough or improperly configured.

Source: I installed a woodburning stove and insulated chimney in my own static/trailer.

I really can't tell if you're joking but you can't just light a fire under a box truck roof lmao.

Edit; just seen the Murphy Porch idea. Some strong chains and that, ranch-style drawbridge effect. Just for the love of God keep the fire outside.

Also OP have you come across Earthbag construction? Polysacking filled with low-organic content subsoil or gravel, laid like brickwork over barbwire and rebar/bamboo driven through for stability. Rendered, or otherwise covered to prevent deterioration of the polybags. Very easy self build.

I don't know if it's remotely applicable but you're the only other person I've come across that I thought might have a use for it.

I love earthships. I also lived in a diesel shortbus that I converted to run on used vegetable oil for a little while when I was younger, so kinda same universe. I’m definitely interested in either building or retrofitting a house with some of the same functions as an earthship once I get out of this drat city.

Yeah earthships are pretty cool. One issue with them that people don't realize is that in an earthship or any building that has a major geothermal component, is that geothermal unless you're near a volcano or particularly radioactive land usually only maintains a temperature of 55 degrees which some people are unaccustomed to living at that temperature in their leisure. Living in GroverTruk for a while, anything above 50 degrees actually feel acceptable to me now that I've adapted to it.

State code however mandates that interiors of living spaces are to be heatable to 68 degrees under winter conditions when measured a foot from a wall and 3 feet up from the floor. So geothermal isn't really allowed as a stand alone in my state.

It can be a good baseline though. Stabilize things around 55, then use passive solar and thermal masses (gray water tanks, etc) to maintain through night time. Wood stoves or something else to bring it up to temp on the real cold days.

So back to the Murphy patio fire pit idea. I'm haaving scruples with how it would work. If say I go inside for the night I have to flip up the Murphy, and probably have the barrel firepit on a gimble so it suspended while it's folded up, but now I have a potential refiring up in a fully enclosed space as opposed to a three quarters enclosed space. Also unless I have a door in the floor of the patio where I want the fire pit to be. It would be difficult getting in and out in the morning. Because I wouldn't be outside manning the leveling posts. Unless I use it as a ramp (may not be even at bottom of ramp) and walk down it to use the leveling posts. I feel it would impede my egress. Perhaps a murphy patio off the side but then I'd want an awning, but if I have an awning I may as well have the fire pit inside the GroverTruk and use the patio as is. Maybe use a tilted structure to convince the smoke to go a certain way that I hang from the cieling and drop down when I use the fire pit maybe.

"hydronic" is the new geothermal. You can use the constantly-55 water as your thermal mass for a heat pump. You can pump heat out of the 55-degree water and put that heat in your space, and vice versa. It lets you have an arbitrary temperature inside your dwelling. You just have to size your hydronic field so that it can absorb the heat changes, either warming up or cooling down before that well is needed again.
