Someone showed me something similar on ... I think ~90s GM trucks? It's definitely a cool idea, and I briefly wanted to pillage one to put on my off-roader, but with newer more modern lighting, it's kind of pointless now. (I'm currently mounting an LED strip underhood that will just light the whole bay, for example.)

Throw an LED in there and it's bright as hell. I use it once in a while. I've occasionally thought about trying to fab up a small rechargeable flashlight in that spot instead, to get rid of the cable. Correct. 88 to about 92. I have one in the engine compartment of my RX-7. As Krakkles says, LEDs make it easy to just mount a stip or several under the hood. On my Jeep, I used a puck light with like 20 LEDs connected to a bayonet bulb base (so I could use the factory socket with mercury switch), and that worked great. I have two LED strips cut from the big rolls in the trunk of my Crown Vic, on towards the rear of the lid, and une under the package tray, and I love it.
