Gaz-L posted:Was Nakanishi any good before he became an immobile lump? I think it'd be fair from what I've seen to characterise him as good-not-great. His best matches are mostly tag team matches but he had some singles matches that are worth checking, mostly in the '00s against Yuji Nagata or Hiroshi Tanahashi. The best Nakanishi singles matches are either May 2009 vs Tanahashi at Korakuen or the 2003 Hyper Battle match from Nagoya Rainbow Hall against Nagata though. I'd also say try find the 7/7/08 tag match with Nakanishi & Nagata vs the Zero1 team of Masato Tanaka & Shinjiro Ohtani. That's a lot of fun. And as a NOAH mark I'd have to say that in 2016 there are 2 8 man tags, NJPW vs NOAH. that are fun. 14/8 with Nakanishi, Nagata, Shibata & Tenzan vs Go Shiozaki, Katsuhiko Nakajima, Maybach Taniguchi & Masa Kitamiya, & then then at King of Pro Wrestling 2016 where the NOAH team was the same but the NJPW team added in Kojima for Shibata. I think that was really the last Nakanishi match I was invested in before his retirement.

https://twitter.com/SirLARIATO/status/1348780652787871750?s=20 I remember being obsessed with the Dragon Rana the first time I saw it in a video game, because it was just the most gravity defying clearly not possible bullshit & I loved that. Fast forward a couple years & there's the Dragon Gate 6 Man in ROH & Dragon Kid does it & it is if anything even cooler than in the games.

drat did Tenryu always hit this hard? I've only known him as An Old and probably have never seen any of his matches

That was sort of Tenryu’s thing, yeah. He was a sumo from ages 13 to 26, then Baba grabbed him, sent him to Amarillo to be trained by the Funks, and just had him whallop dudes because he pretty consistently had like forty to fifty pounds on everyone and is barely shorter than Okada (6’1” to Okada’s 6’3”). Think of him as Takayama like fifteen years before Takayama started. poo poo, just looking at that gif he still throws punches like a Funk.

a cyborg mug posted:drat did Tenryu always hit this hard? I've only known him as An Old and probably have never seen any of his matches Oh god yeah. Tenryu held his own against sluggers of the 80s like Bruiser Brody & Stan Hansen & Jumbo Tsuruta. Then when he came back to All Japan (after the NOAH split) he stood in there with Kawada & Kojima & Mutoh. In between the 2 AJPW runs he had brutal matches with Takada, with Hashimoto, he became the only wrestler to hold singles victories over both Giant Baba & Antonio Inoki. It's one of those quirks of history, if Tenryu didn't jump from All Japan to SWS then Baba probably doesn't feel the need to have Misawa go over Jumbo at the Budokan in 1990 & Tenryu is the ace of the company for at least the first half of the 90s. Instead, he kind of gets underlooked relative to the Four Pillars. He's the guy opposite Hulk Hogan in a match people often pointed to for "Hogan was better in Japan" arguments. Tenryu slaps. Hard.

Thanks for the deets on Tenryu. I'm bad at watching archive stuff (just have difficulty concentrating anything that's not live/very fresh) but might have to dig up some of the matches mentioned. I have however at some point watched one or two "Hulk Hogan was better in Japan" matches so maybe I've actually seen an entire Tenryu match after all!
