The original is a classic, of course, but is still a little disturbingly campy considering the subject matter. The characters were extremely well done though. The 2016 version changes the story a bit, drops the white-guilt ridden slaver captain, and overall portrays everything in a grittier, more realistic style than the original. The cinematography and pacing of the story is a lot better, and leaves you gasping a bit at the end of every episode. It takes liberties with the story, of course (there's liberties all throughout honestly), showing Kunte Kinte now fighting in the Revolutionary War. Ironically for me at least, he takes part in the Battle of Great Bridge, about five minutes from where I was born and raised. It's a really good series and is worth the ten bucks that we paid for it. I'm curious why it didn't receive much fanfare when it came out, I looked it up on Wikipedia and it seems like it garnered pretty good reviews and accolades.
