Having a million to retire on at 45 essentially means saving £50,000 a year. Which even with zero outgoings through sponging of your parents still requires you to be earning at least £50,000 a year. Which I’m gonna say is not easily achievable for most.

Most of the people who want to retire at 45 want to be able to fly around the world on endless dick-waving holidays and just do whatever the gently caress they want, which doesn't seem feasible on that sort of retirement income.

It's not achievable for him then either is it as he's only earning 25k pa atm.

Assuming he would have retired at 70 anyway.

£400k at 1% over 25 years returns £512k in the bank.

£600k / 25 years is £24000 a year, or median salary.

That’s effectively never having to work again money for 80% of all the employed people in the country.

He's also getting a pension which, based on his story, could well be a final salary pension

Being furloughed for three months last year made me really, really look forward to being retired. Unfortunately the chances of me doing so a day earlier than the state pension age aren't high, unless something dramatic happens.

Don't you have rich parents you can move in with? Didn't you know that's the easy trick that everyone can do to save money.

Also lol @ retiring at 45 with £1m.

I don't think most people realise that £1m isn't that huge amount of money.

Though I guess he's probably going to inherit his parents house and their wealth when they die.

It's definitely not enough to be independently wealthy, but it could be enough to be independently poor. Assuming 1% interest and 2% inflation, you could pay yourself 25k in today's money for 33 years on a 1m nest egg, the NLW for 40 years, and closer to 50 if you can get 1.5%. Just pray you don't turn out to be unexpectedly long-lived. Or that inflation doesn't go way up. Or that savings don't completely crash. Or that your bank doesn't collapse.

Edit: Beaten, oh well

You might as well post your plan, it would be more interesting and realistic than those money diaries
The easy mode version is you just buy a bunch of flats and pay a letting agency to manage them and then live off other people's work for your whole life.

Makes you a prick but definitely doable with £1m.

But that's also the sort of money where you can get listed as an interested investor in Belize, buy a farm with a few acres, and life off of yams and spirulina and wind power for the rest of your life. Even have some banana plants.

Or same but in Somerset and with less exotic fruits.

I would simply have a mechanical wind-powered waving dick on the farmhouse roof, like those windmills with the little guys sawing wood.

Had to fix my boiler this morning. 15 degrees in the house, barbaric stuff. Finally getting toasty now.

Didn't get serviced last summer, I guess due to covid the guy didn't bother showing up. It's an outside unit usually I don't even know he's come around before he shoves paperwork through the lettebox.

Desperately searching for any clue that Labour / Welsh Labour has any kind of soul anymore. With Senedd elections coming up in May (probably) and I'm planning to vote for our Labour candidate - not because she is Labour but because she will be a fantastic representative as a personal person and I know her - I just need to understand.
