Nolan is probably the worst offender, but nobody talks about loudness wars in terms of movie mixing but it is absolutely a thing. The last time I went to a theater and the sound effects and music weren't painfully loud was when an arthouse theater was showing the original Suspiria film which was actually purposefully very loud compared to other movies from the 70s.
