Does anyone have any good reading on why the USA's 2018 bombing of Uighur militants happened? Or is it just an ongoing thing to target ETIM & TIM since 9/11 & especially after the 2009 Urumqi riots? https://www.nbcnews.com/news/world/u-s-targets-chinese-uighur-militants-well-taliban-fighters-afghanistan-n845876 https://www.washingtonpost.com/news...re-has-changed/ MinutePirateBug fucked around with this message at 01:30 on Feb 10, 2021 |

Shipping's not an issue.

I mean, according to the articles you linked, the US bombed a Taliban base located inside of Afghanistan that happened to house ETIM in addition to Taliban fighters, so I imagine that's the long and short of it.

The junk collector posted:I mean, according to the articles you linked, the US bombed a Taliban base located inside of Afghanistan that happened to house ETIM in addition to Taliban fighters, so I imagine that's the long and short of it. It seems a bit more targeted than that. "MAJ. GEN. HECKER: Over the past weekend, United States forces conducted air operations to strike Taliban and East Turkestan Islamic Movement, or ETIM, training facilities in Badakhshan province. The destruction of these training facilities prevent terrorists from planning any acts near the border with China and Tajikistan. The strikes also destroyed stolen Afghan National Army vehicles in the process of being converted to vehicle-borne improvised explosive devices. One brief note on ETIM, which I just mentioned. They're a terrorist organization that operates in China and the border regions of Afghanistan. ETIM enjoys support from the Taliban in the mountains of Badakhshan, so hitting these Taliban training facilities and squeezing the Taliban's support networks degrades ETIM capabilities." Edit: nvm Q: Hello, General. Thank you for doing this. I just had a couple of questions about the Badakhshan strike. It's been reported, and you said at the opening remarks that the East Turkestan Islamic Movement was also targeted in these strikes. Is this the first time that this group has been targeted by U.S. or coalition aircraft? And under what authority is that done? Is it due to their connection to other groups? And if you could also provide a little more clarity on where Badakhshan -- these training camps were. Were they part of the corridor that connects to China? MAJ. GEN. HECKER: OK, so I'll answer the last part first. So, the -- the strikes, you know, if you look -- Badakhshan is in the northeast portion of Afghanistan. There is a -- that small corridor that runs to basically where it gets to the border with China. It wasn't along that straight right there; it was inland from that or more to the east, and that's where the strikes were conducted. Now, we didn't actually strike ETIM terrorists when we were doing this. We were strictly -- strictly striking the -- the training camps that both the Taliban as well as the ETIM use. And we're using our existing authorities to do that. https://www.defense.gov/Newsroom/Tr...teleconference/ This was also coming roughly at the same time as China was negotiating with the Taliban to stop supporting ETIM in Afghanistan and the US-Taliban deal for withdrawal in July of 2021. https://www.brookings.edu/wp-content/uploads/2020/06/FP_20200615_china_afghanistan_felbab_brown.pdf https://www.militarytimes.com/flashpoints/2018/02/08/pentagon-thinks-china-could-be-a-partner-in-afghanistan/ Edit: Then Pompeo revoked their designation as a terrorist organization in October of 2020 https://www.federalregister.gov/doc...wn-as-etim-as-a Edit: This is really confusing because ETIM may have never existed and may just be a Chinese propaganda thing? The USA declared an imaginary organization a terrorist organization and then bombed imaginary people? Then declared that it was in fact imaginary ~20 years after the fact. I still deal with dumbfuck Canadians who think antifa is some sort of traditional organization with hierarchy, funding, c&c, etc and swallow all of the “antifa false flag” narratives that news media or government mouthpieces like to cough up whenever racial minorities make a fun scapegoat. ETIM bears an awful lot of hallmarks of the same sort of thing from my initial read over the links that have been provided. I’m sure they exist or existed in some capacity, but it looks like a similar situation where detractors overstated their organization and blurred their intentions into a form that’s easy for people to swallow despite the explanation being way more complicated than the reality.

A lot of Muslim terrorist groups have used it as a propaganda point but to my knowledge they’ve provided virtually no material support, same as with Myanmar. From my understanding ETIM has served more as a way for various Al-Queda groups to do something with the manpower from pissed young males fleeing China, they’re probably more active in other countries than China, I don’t think they really have any capability there.

Does anyone know if internally, the belt and road project is justified as a means to increase the export of Chinese surplus production? I remember the theorized need of capitalist economies to export surplus was important in early Cold War soviet thought. Now I’ve got to thinking it may still influence China’s current leaders. It was big in third worldist thought.

It's CCTV Spring Festival Gala time, the (Lunar) New Year's Eve countdown show watched by hundreds of millions of people in China, so that means it's time for a Chinese person in blackface to perform an "African" song. Just like last year. And the year before. And maybe the year before too. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JEvAAaYz0O8 (Close-up of the actual blackface starts at around 0:37 but the whole thing is a globe-spanning whirlwind.)
