The thing is, backtracking through the thread, this is all in response to the creators of Magic: The Gathering (which predates Harry Potter by quite a bit of time) publishing a series of books about a magic school and publicly saying it's not them ripping off Harry Potter, which is what they would say even if JK Rowling had never said a single controversial thing ever. No idea what the politics of these new books will be, but your opinion of JK Rowling shouldn't have anything to do with these new books. Steven The Reasonable is still an idiot, though. It should also be noted that there's a poo poo ton of books that came out before Harry Potter that were about kids in a magic school, and I assume most of the people behind these new books are aware of them, so it's probably a safe assumption they have more inspiration than just Harry Potter.

Goa Tse-tung posted:not books, new cards in an expansion centered around a Wizard School Oh, it's even dumber than I thought. The picture from Mark Rosewater's tweet looked like book covers. But Mark Rosewater probably read every single wizard school book that was published before the first Harry Potter, before the first Harry Potter.

Skwirl posted:Oh, it's even dumber than I thought. The whole discourse surrounding the expansion isn't so much that people are clutching their pearls at the prospect that mage school = Harry Potter and nothing else, it was that Hasbro made a tentative deal to make a Harry Potter specific crossover, so when the mage school set was teased, it was widely assumed that this deal was coming into fruition, which is why Harry Potter was brought up in the first place earlier on in that thread.

Scratch Monkey posted:Rowling ripped off The Books of Magic, like, a LOT. Ehh, not really, there's a lot of Tim Hunter in Harry Potter as a character, but "bespeckled nerd who finds out he's super important" is a super common trope in british children's lit and there's pretty much no plot similarities between Books of Magic and any of the Harry Potter books. There's a halfway decent chance JK Rowling never read Books of Magic. None of the secondary characters in Books of Magic (Constantine, Zattara, The Spectre, etc) resemble any of the supporting cast in the Harry Potter books. Edit: Like don't get me wrong, gently caress JK Rowling, but aside from the physical similarities of the protagonists, what exactly do the Harry Potter books have in common with Books of Magic, it's been a while since I've read either so maybe I'm forgetting something. But Tim Hunter doesn't even go to a loving school in those books IIRC Air Skwirl has a new favorite as of 22:00 on Feb 11, 2021 |

Turns out a lot of writers are creatively bankrupt and are just mashing together a bunch of broad stereotypes into already existing fictional frameworks. The good writers also do this, but they manage to make it interesting.
