Also someone asked him what he thinks about buttcoin and he said something like "I only ever see white dudes talking about bitcoin. I think the purpose of bitcoin is to take Elon Musk and all the fanboys to Mars where they can stand around at parties talking about bitcoin forever."

Bitcoin is one of the worst things to ever happen, in terms of us setting the entire planet on fire. People mining bitcoin are burning up more fossil fuels than Argentina.

to me bitcoin is the biggest proof that all that we've built is doomed because humanity can't be trusted to ensure its own legacy, and when 1/1000th of the current population is left huddling in ruins and drinking tainted water they'll look to bitcoin as the ultimate manifestation of our hubris

I mean it's slightly more obvious with bitcoin but how it works isn't really novel, it's just that you are literally running manufactured_scarcity.exe on your computer by feeding it coal, rather than constructing an entire society to do do it. It's just a more direct example of a terrible social structure, and it is only a thing because of that wider structure.

I dunno, I think it sounds p cool. Alien 1: What killed off the human empire? Alien 2: Seems they built massive networks of computers to attempt to solve some enigmatic equations. Allen 1: Then what happened? Alien 2: No one is sure, but doing that killed their planet. Alien 1: Wow, mysterious.

I wonder how many megatons of glacier/day bitcoin works out as https://twitter.com/adam_tooze/status/1201849062019997696 But this is good for bitcoin because it proves how real it is as currency; rational agents wouldn't destroy the habitability of their own planet for mere fiat currency. /s It's hard to not be disconnected from the environmental costs of our own consumption; it's estimated that using a smartphone creates the same emissions as running two refrigerators, and it can only be estimated because it would be impossible to actually measure it. But it's not so difficult to calculate the impact of production, producers usually know with precision just how much they are contributing to environmental degradation. Being rich is all about being able to afford to ignore the problems you cause as you keep being rich.

I mostly associate that with finding those packets in coat pockets, but I also always grab a bunch of candy anytime I'm at a concierge desk or whatever, so I appreciate the "do not eat" warning, because I'll put on a random coat and find some werthers and what not in the pocket.

I recently read a Reddit () thread about what you'd do if all humans suddenly disappeared, and all the answers were about setting up solar panels and generators and gathering gas and vehicles and creating a sustainable mini version of the modern world just for themselves. Like, are you loving kidding me? Given the choice you'd live alone in a facsimile of the modern world? I'd get naked and grow a crazy beard and find a good dog and disappear into the woods and eventually die of a minor infection. Maybe if I felt motivated I'd walk down to Florida with the dog and raid grocery stores along the way and chill on the beach until a crab pinches me and I die from a minor infection.
