https://twitter.com/CarlZha/status/1360404742111862787 When it was newly built, the streets of the new Kangbashi district did not have much activity, and the district was frequently described as a "ghost city" by several Western media outlets. However, by 2017, Kangbashi had become more populated with a resident population of 153,000 and around one-third of apartments occupied. In a Forbes article, Wade Shepard noted that "...of the 40,000 apartments that had been built in the new district since 2004, only 500 are still on the market

Having two-thirds of apartments being vacant is pretty disastrous. I read in the past that this is partially due to China lacking property taxes, is that still the case?

There is no property tax but in theory you are only buying 70 year usage right of a residential apartment, you don't "own" your apartment. The people own it.

Yes, which means that local municipalities have to resort to generate income via selling real estate. If there's no more land to sell, they can just evict the poorest of residents, demolish their once-affordable housing, and replace them with fancier apartments and malls to be sold to future bagholders. No property taxes means there's no drawback to rich people hoarding vacant properties as stable financial assets.

gradenko_2000 posted:has there been any information on whether China has already started vaccinating people against COVID and how well they've been doing that? they started in January I think but only had one vaccine approved at the time. they just approved another like last week. I think they’re going slower than the US and Europe but it’s also not as big of a deal since they have the virus pretty well controlled

je1 healthcare posted:Having two-thirds of apartments being vacant is pretty disastrous. Not really, the whole point is that China is building these units in anticipation of future demand. About 40% of the population of the country is still rural and there is a massive government effort to move people into the cities to increase their economic productivity (and simultaneously reduce poverty). Building apartments in advance prevents this urbanization from putting pressure on the housing market. Red and Black has issued a correction as of 11:38 on Feb 15, 2021 |

Look up the recent news of a village (actual farming village) that built entire grid of new houses and made the whole village move into them.. Those business type who try to use western financial tools to analyze China never understand China has the ability to make the population of a whole town move to a new location, which none other country in the world can do that.

Can someone explain to me why the opposition in russia hold such insanely right wing reactionary views against african american movements like BLM and such? it makes it really difficult to be on their side in their struggle against putin but then read any of their insane racist screeds written by people like Kasparov and Navalny and not immediately be put off by them, like arent these folks supposed to be "liberal democrats"?

the russian liberal bugbear for the past several hundred years has been a completely russianized russia, where some regions and peoples wear funny hats and have tans but they all speak russian and follow the enlightened rule of their educated and urbanized betters this obsession with national purity of course makes them natural enemies of any kind of minority rights movement, because these urbanized and educated dominant cultures obviously know better than the underclass and to suggest otherwise is an attack on the natural order of things navalny specifically has always been upfront about his rabid nationalism, so it's no surprise that he sympathizes with the people putting down a "threat to national unity" and has awful things to say about people not invested in the smooth operation of empire

Yasha Levine talks about it in his substack/podcast: https://yasha.substack.com/p/episode-2-russians-against-politics The Russian liberals are far right much like anywhere in Europe. I can't tell the populace as a whole is rabidly racist since it's a multi-ethnic population or it's concentrated in the big cities and surrounding burbs. Russian emigres are a mostly racist bunch especially those who were raised in the 70s or 80s, older Russians seemed more chill in my opinion.

lol I wasnt looking for anything I was just confused how the 'liberal democratic' opposition square this circle in their minds, I am under no illusion as to the general Chuddery of Russia. I gotta say though, like if this is the best they can put forward what real difference do they provide in comparison to putin? are they actually gonna dismantle the oligarchs? are they gonna reform the nightmare capitalism? it seems the furthest they've thought about is 'we're not Putin' and if Navalny's hyper-nationalism is true it really kneecaps their ability to reach anyone outside of their circles and form an actual alternative to Putin.

Al-Saqr posted:What's the difference between a computer telling you what to do versus a computer doing it itself? computers arent actually that smart and chess playing computers dont use artificial intelligence as we understand it they base their decisions on the outcomes of previous chess games with identical positions they easily get confused and make weird incomprehensible moves if faced with unusual board positions a human player or team using computer tools is much better at grasping the context of an individual board layout and building a long term coherent strategy that makes sense as opposed to just focusing on the best possible short term decisions basically when anyone says that movie like artificial intelligence is probably beyond our lifetimes this is what they mean data on its own can do amazing things but machines arent very good at analyzing anything with a great deal of contextual complexity and people misunderstanding this is how we get amazing fuckups like the hillary campaign trusting the algorithms so hard they ignore the actual canvassers
