Granted, a lot of it is the STF covering their rear end, because granting this Habeas Corpus makes all the other requests that were based on the vaza jato revelations moot (this one was that Lula should have been tried in Brasilia not Curitiba, all the other ones were about the abuses revealed by vaza jato).

And then there is also this:

O Povo Brasileiro (The Brazilian People) from Darcy Ribeiro (a hardcore socialist) is the Big One of Brazilian Anthropology and will make you know more about the culture of the country than most of its "intellectuals" in one read, lmao

Formação Econômica do Brasil (Economic Formation of Brazil) describes the establishment of the Brazilian economy since its conquest by Portugal. The author is a social-democrat but doesn't shirk away from using Marxist ideas if necessary

Olga by Fernando Morais is the story Olga Benário Prestes, the wife of Luís Carlos Prestes and as much as a historic leader of the Brazilian Communist Party as he, detailing her side of the story about the fight of the PCB against Vargas, their exile and ultimately her capture and death by nazis. It's literary journalism so it is pretty easy to read in comparison with the others

Casa Grande e Senzala (generally translated as Masters and Slaves) by Gilberto Freyre is a foundational work of Brazilian sociology describing how slave-driven patriarchalism was the cornerstone of society, going against the notions of "racial character" and general racist/colonialist idiocy in vogue at the time. Freyre is not a socialist but was one of the earliest thinkers interested in looking at Brazil through Brazilian culture, so he does hit some nails of materialist analysis in the process

Os Sertões (The Hinterlands) by Euclides da Cunha if you are feeling up to the challenge of a modern epic. It is a masterwork of sociology, geography, history, journalism and literature all rolled into one book describing the Canudos Uprising in the state of Bahia. Da Cunha is a brilliant, excellent writer and the book has plenty of powerful turns of prose that are quite memorable. It is a multidisciplinary book because he divided it in three parts: "The Land", a geographical and historical account of the Brazilian Northeast, the backdrop and stage of the conflict; "The Man", the anthropological and sociological considerations of the Brazilians living in the Northeastern Hinterlands; and "The Struggle", the part where Euclides properly narrates and describes the conflict as an observer and reporter, culminating with the Battle of Canudos. In terms of popular history, it is one of the books that can teach the most about how Brazil fundamentally works even to this day

Yeah, this is a bit nerve-wracking. It was a gamble by Fachin to save Moro's bacon, that vaseline "ok, give a bit to each side so no one can be TOO mad at us" kind of wrangling. Though it seems Gilmar isn't buying it and will go after Moro anyhow, to stamp down on thw wave of 1st-court judges running wild and dropping crazy poo poo at the feet of higher courts.

I'm happy and all because it was an obvious hit job, but it also means that our press and institutions will instantly drop their "Let's save democracy, everyone except bozo!" act in a flash. Dória must be sighing in relief now; conservative media had been punching him nonstop, since he was the 'natural' rival to Bolsonaro. Now he might as well have fallen from the face of the Earth.

I find that very unlikely to happen, every single officer is irredeemably reactionary and so is every PM. No way this kind of purge can happen in a peaceful transition lol.

very mixed bag in the army at the lower ranks (imho) since most conscripts are poor after all. tbqf, Lula would be the guy who could carry out such reform

(also a significant chunk of them become riflemen for narcs, far better pay and job security lmao)

now if Lula runs again by god someone in the workers' party get this man a coach to yell at him about all the hosed up poo poo they talked about his dead wife to get him in the proper mood to gently caress SOME REACTIONARIES UP FFS

"Lula-lá" was his campaign jingle. "Lula-lá shines a star lula-lá hope comes", with one of those awful harmony arrangements that your ears tell you it is awful but insanely catchy

https://theintercept.com/2021/03/11/lava-jato-mentira-de-internet-prender-lula-em-flagrante/

Dudes, dudettes, gender-neutral people, this one is great.

For the gringos, a quick summary: The Lava-Jato people were SURE they had a smoking gun against Lula, a crucifix made by a famous Brazilian artist, which supposedly belonged to the State and disappeared after Lula left office, that was later found in a safe in his wife's and son's name amongst other gifts Lula received as president - which would be larceny, pretty much...

...except everything actually belonged to Lula himself, and they assumed it was state property because of an out-of-context picture featuring a former Brazilian president that would date its presence in the Planalto to the 90s. Basically, Dallagnol fell for a fake story and wanted to believe it so bad he couldn't be bothered to do a quick Google search, since the hoax was disproven by a major Brazilian publication five years before this whole mess.

Ah, and it turns out even the other gifts Lula received legally belonged to him because they were his personal belongings, not state property, despite him receiving those presents while being in office. So they didn't even get that right, because the Lava-Jato folks are not only malicious but also very incompetent.
