Is there something I'm missing about the combat in Moss? The rest of the game is delightful, but whenever I get to a combat arena it just turns into a slog. I'll grab a beetle with my hand, but as soon as I hit it, it breaks the stun and often immediately counter-hits. It feels like they have a weak spot under their wings that I could reveal and take advantage of if I knew the right gesture, but I don't.

Do I just need to be dodging more and using my hands mainly for crowd control or something?

Yeah I just checked in on the vapelifeyo guy and he's grinding for XP rushing through war-mode lobbies calling people bitches for playing the game mode the way it's meant to be played and he is deriding any new players getting wet with the game because they're impeding his progression towards a gold skin for something?

I will also say they really nailed the gameplay loop in Pop1 more than any other VR shooter I’ve tried.

The noise that plays when you hit people and the sound effect for a kill, the fanfare when you win, the glow behind the scoreboard for a win, it’s all designed to hit those serotonin boosts that Call of Duty does so well, and dammit, it works!

Skip to 6:00 for the good stuff. I was recording this on the quest so there is no mic audio from me, I’m not being a psychopath and ignoring my team :shobon:

https://youtu.be/Lwu4yaICgVk

E: on the toxicity front, actually playing the game
It’s really pretty chill. I play at night so I mostly get other adults and no one gets worked up. Enderzero and I did get a lobby with a racist 9 year old in it, but he wasn’t in our squad and that’s honestly quite rare. The worst that usually happens is you get some wide-eyed kid who’s just happy to be there but you have to revive 30 times lol

Vape is the Ninja of Pop1 basically. A big personality, a skill set to back up how he runs his mouth and a gaggle of people coming for the crown. Doesn’t excuse his poo poo behavior though. It’s unfortunate that he is the first streamer most experience with Pop1, simply because he’s the most popular and at the top of the list when you pick Pop1 on twitch.

I eventually refunded Pop1 because there was no Solo mode and I'm socially inept enough to not really want to talk to a group of randos. I feel like a liability when I jump in a squad without voice chat and have no idea what I'm doing. These are all standard BR problems but I do like when I at least have an option of going in solo to get a feel for things and learn without having to also account for what everyone else on my squad is doing. I know that dude in that video isn't indicative of the Pop1 experience as a whole but the whole getting pissed at new players for not playing right or whatever is always what inevitably turns me off from interacting with pubs in games like this.

There's people itt who love it and have no issues with it but the game made me super sick. I think it was just the perfect intersection of muddy textures, fast motion in a car while sitting perfectly still in a chair, and my proclivity towards getting into accidents in this game that really did a number on me. I'm not speaking for everyone who has played it but my experience was not great. The game itself rules though if you're looking for a fun, rear end clenchingly tense racing experience.

On the other hand I have no issues with it, if you do get the bundle I would say pay the extra few bucks to get all the DLC as well. It adds in all the content from Dirt Rally 1 as well as a load more cars and rallycross tracks. Plus the Colin McRae pack which is really cool to play through.

I dunno, I’ve had people literally apologize at the end of matches and I’ve never seen a bad response. I got completely carried to a win the other day (I had 0 kills and we still won) and I thanked them for carrying me and everyone just laughed.

I think people get more self conscious about it than they need to. It’s a battle Royale game, which automatically means you won’t win all the time, people get that.

Yeah, hands are more for cc rather than attacking setups. The combat is pretty light (it's meant to be a chill game, really) and actually gets a bit easier as you progress. Once you get one sword upgrade the basic enemies take one basic combo to kill and it's more of an endurance item after that.

Let's be honest for a moment: Moss is liked because the lil' mouse is cute and it has a pleasing fairy tale atmosphere, it's fairly polished, but... that's pretty much it. The platforming is very average, the puzzles aren't very imaginative and the combat is eh, bordering on mediocre. It isn't a game that people recommends thanks to its tight gameplay.

Yeah, I have the sword upgrade now and stuff dies faster. Just felt like there was a little something missing early on, which could have bitten me if there was a whole mechanic I was ignoring by brute forcing the combat.

I get where you're coming from, I generally hate forced voice interaction with games, especially FPS's. For some reason VR feels different for me, maybe it's cause by definition everyone using a VR headset automatically has voice? In any case I have been incredibly surprised with how people handle themselves. I"ve played with girls and little kids on the same team along with adults and no one belittles each other or does anything except try to help each other out. I've also had a few matches with weedlordbonerhitler types but they generally cash out quickly since they're also lovely at the game.

The only real 'upset' is whether or not to hot drop each game, but people are definitely learning to stay together more which is nice to see.

I should mention there is a solo mode, you can play with bots, and even do co-op with bots. Definitely recommend this to understand how each gun handles.

Beve Stuscemi
Jun 6, 2001

The bots have gotten better during one of these updates too. They used to just stand around dumbfounded by your mere existence and now they at least run and shoot.

It’s still not any kind of replacement for real humans but they are good for learning how to snipe and get used to the various guns

Replayed the game start to finish and boy does it hold up on a second playthrough. Really magnificent. Jeff was not scary this time around, which is kinda funny because he was the most terrifying gaming experience of my life the first time and I had nightmares afterward. The part in the Jeff chapter where you open the cabinet to get the power cell and a bottle starts slowly rolling towards the edge is so simple but so effective and is the kind of game design space where VR truly shines. It's a unique bit of gameplay that they don't have to telegraph or tutorialize at all. You just know you have to catch it, so you do.

I actually failed to do that the first time around, and it's an achievement, I got it the second time though.

But yeah that whole chapter, the kind of crazy subtle finesse movements you're doing. I want more gameplay like that in games. Manipulation on a micro scale. It's funny we have this new medium basically and a lot of gameplay is still kind of in a controller/mouse and keyboard mindset, there's so much intricacy we could have now. Not that bashing and shooting dudes isn't fun. I've also still only scratched the surface of VR gaming, too, so I'm sure there are plenty of games that scratch that more subtle itch that I haven't explored yet (I was really impressed with Lone Echo, for example).

Spent an hour dicking around in NomaiVR, the Outer Wilds VR mod. It's insanely impressive for something that a fan hacked into the game. You use your gadgets by retrieving them from your toolbelt with motion controls, and the spaceship UX is reworked so that the landing camera is just another instrument panel that you can look down at after you turn it on. Overall, it's a higher effort VR port than Resident Evil 7, and it's a handful of QOL and control fixes away from being an experience I would recommend to anyone. Anyone who has really strong VR legs, anyway.

The main two things that were problematic for me were the jetpack controls (especially in zero-G, where forward is oriented based on your suit rather than based on your look direction, but there isn't really anything to orient you with that other than discovering that you're not going where you wanted to, and spinning around until you are) and the weird use of the grip button as a modifier for a bunch of things, which works really poorly on knuckles, but at the same time I couldn't figure out any better thing to bind that to without breaking the rest of the control scheme. It's one of those rare games that I think would be better on Oculus or Vive wands.

It also suffers slightly from issues of scale because the game wasn't designed for VR, so everything looks *huge*.
