And the interior on said boat still looks like cheap, tacky poo poo with crappy looking LED lighting, cheap downlighters, 90s as gently caress chrome-grilled circular speakers wedged in the ceiling. I like how all the furniture is that wipe clean vinyl stuff, presumably because boat and water yet the control setup for the thing is mostly touchscreen (with a UI that looks crap too).

You’ve clearly never been to Fort Lauderdale (or Naples, to a slightly lesser extent.)

The only place in the world where people with 27’ twin-engined center consoles are the poor kids.

I live in St.Pete right on the coast so yeah I see it all the time.

Every year for the St.Pete Grand Prix, Roger Penske brings his giant loving yacht to the marina next to the track to show he has the biggest yacht cock, it makes all the other yachts jealous and the poor people weep I'm sure he loves it.

I know one of the "poor kids". He was juuuust smart enough to stick with a 27 ft. twin-engine center console. He's one of those people that knows everything and always has something to say. He drops that attitude immediately when the boat is involved. You've never met a more patient teacher or one happier to see you learn than that man on a boat. Instant dad, just add water. Total cream-puff vessel, too. Custom built with plenty of storage and painted in a beautiful two-tone turquoise pastel and white.

"Wouldn't you like one of those big boats, Ron?"
"Lol, no matter how much money I make I can barely afford this one!"

Thank you for attending my TEDTalk.

I mean, assuming that 0.4mpg figure is in the right ballpark, that's only 600 miles of range. I'd guess that there's more of a need for a large margin of error on boats ... can't exactly call AAA (or can you?) in the middle of a lake.

There's living quarters underneath.

My wife's boss (owner of a multi million dollar commercial roofing business) has the same type of boat (giant center console) and he hires captains to take it to the Bahamas, Belize, etc and he flies out to meet them and go fishing. The living quarters are basically for the captains to crash while the owners stay at the resort where the boat is docked.

OK, that makes more sense. I had to dig through the gallery to find pictures of the cabin.

It's definitely a racket in Florida, not sure how they managed to maintain the monopoly for so long, but I wouldn't be surprised if "cracking skulls" or some other kind of corruption had anything to do with it. That and probably ridiculous insurance rates and licensing to keep the little guys out of it.

Yeah, I mean.....I think most of us know how scummy a lot of tow operators are. Now add more money and the risk of drowning if the issue isn't handled in time. And being in places where nobody can hear you scream and the wildlife will make quick work of the body.

In Australia we have the Australian Volunteer Coast Guard which is nothing like the American idea. Ours is AAA of the seas. Each Flotilla is staffed mainly by old boaties that want to tool around on bigger boats than they can afford, while playing Navy. I was a volunteer maybe a decade ago mainly because I was going for a bunch of licenses and if I was a volunteer they were free/subsidized. (plus free tows).

I think the going rate back then was Maybe $100-$200 a year membership and that got you a good park for your trailer and vehicle at the harbour when out on the water, and 24/7 free towing/fuel drops. There were limits of how many times you got a rescue naturally, but if we were out and about on the water anyway - the old Aussie 'carton rule' applied.

https://coastguard.com.au/marine-assist/

The money was made on cheapskates that didn't think they needed coverage. Hoooo boy didn't they get fingered for the tow/fueldrop/rescue

I got my boating license well before I could drive. I remember in the early 90s you had to take like an 8 hour course then a written test. Some friends finally took theirs like 5 years ago and it was all online and much shorter.

From what I gathered by sitting on my uncle's boat in Wisco, there you could drive a boat on a regular driver's license, but could take a class for a boating license if you were younger than 16 (which he made my cousins do). Small boats on a lake, and all that.

From experience, you also needed to have a stocked cooler full of beer to operate.

My thought that lead me to post that was "I bet you don't even need a boating license in Florida", so I looked it up, and nope, you don't (you only need to take a boating safety course if you were born after 1988). I assumed it would be the same all over the US, but I should have guessed Florida is it's own special thing.

I went to high school in central Florida and we all knew who the cool rich kids were who we could get to invite us over and let us take out their parents' boat, because all the rich people there live on a lake anyway. I drove a bunch of motorboats without anything more than a quick "these are the controls" from my friends. I think there are ostensibly patrols in the lakes but it's so easy to find isolated spots to do whatever in the huge chains of lakes. I remember thinking that there were probably a lot more rules about driving boats, especially for teenagers who might have alcohol, but nothing ever really came up. The dumbest things that happened were running out of gas and getting stuck in the swampy reeds.

On inland lakes in Michigan you have to TRY to get pulled over. The baseline level is 12 people doing kegstands on a pontoon; as long as there are 12 life vests and one person has a drivers license and can still speak the cops don't care.

No licence required to operate a recreational boat here in NZ but legally you’re supposed to have a operators certificate to operate a marine VHF radio (NZ$90 online course) and the Coastguard recommends you at least do a Day Skippers course (NZ$170 online). Coastguard membership membership is $115/yr or $1725 for life and gets you $100 off the day skippers course and other discounts, and free fuel or tow assist within coverage areas, which is 99% of the places recreational boating happens. Beyond that maritime search and rescue becomes a government thing, our SAR area stretches from the near the South Pole to beyond Tokelau and from halfway to Australia to halfway to Chile, some 30 million sq km. Note our coastguard is more like the UK’s RNLI than America’s Coastguard.

Fun fact, after the America’s Cup is finished, the 26 chase/support boats are being refitted and donated to coastguard units around the country.
