My general understanding is that most pipe infrastructure in the country is buried between 4-5 feet underground, below any potential freeze line, in any climate with freeze/thaw potential. Texas buries their lines to about a foot, partly because under that first foot is a shitload of limestone. Most utilities house their equipment indoors because of that freeze/thaw potential, Texas puts all their poo poo outdoors so it cools off faster in the summertime. Their entire system is built for summer.

Now you can mitigate that risk with winterization, stores of natural gas/oil, and connecting yourself to other grids. Most of Texas did none of that because it costs money and/or stops you from owning the libs. El Paso has been fine in all of this because they put in the money since 2011, are connected to the national grid, and just generally have their poo poo together.

Texas, being a one-party Republican state that loves to gently caress with the blue cities, basically decided that it was more important to own the libs than to prepare for 5/10 year disasters.

This has happened like 2 or 3 times in the last decade and federal recommendations were the same and ignored every time.

I'm actually surprised by the lack of a load shedding plan by the utility though. Thats just extreme incompetence. Like actual trying incompetence.

The cooler rugs at Bagram in 2012 also had drones and AKs in rings around the towers.

Now, the better part of a decade later, I wish I had bought enough for a lifetime of Secret Santas.

Instead, I bought bootleg DVDs of the then-new Dredd and the whole Neon Genesis Evangelion series. Wasn't a bad use of my money by any means, but it also wasn't a sick 9/11 rug.

That sucks. The last time I went through a customs that gave any poo poo at all about bootlegs, the rule was only one bootleg per media, so you could have ten movies if they were all different movies, but it would get confiscated if you had ten copies of one movie.

One copy: "Gee, I didn't know it was a bootleg." is plausible.

29 copies: less so

Watching the last couple of Eva episodes had been my plan for the flight to Manas. I just remember standing in front of the amnesty box thinking "Well, I guess I get hosed one last time before I leave"

If I'd known in advance that the Army even had customs at the Bagram pax terminal, I would have put the discs in an unlabeled case, but by that point I'd already been stuck at my fob for an extra month past my projected rip/toa and I just wanted to get home.

Edit: so instead of then spending three days in Kyrgyzstan watching movies and anime, I spent the entire time eating candy at the chow hall. Like, almost every single minute I wasn't sleeping or turning in gear. I'm amazed I didn't give myself diabetes. I just sat there and ate. They had kit-kats and reese's peanut butter cups for the taking. It was amazing.

Back in 2008, they tossed absolutely all of our poo poo on the way out of theater. A couple guys had a spare round on them. I watched a soldier throw multiple grenades (pin-in) into the amnesty HESCO.

That one led to a MSG pulling him aside to say that while he had amnesty, maybe rethink his whole life if he flew down here with grenades carefully tucked away deep in his pack and only got rid of them after the threats of the customs brief.

If people don’t riot over this Texas thing then you can probably put a nail in the coffin of the possibility of us ever doing anything about anything except bending over and taking it.

They do this poo poo because we let them. And they’re going to continue doing it forever.

BECAUSE WE LET THEM

I’m going to maybe victim blame now: we are tacitly okay with everything that happens because all we do is bitch online. As long as we have internet, they have us corralled.

It's this, but: our politics has degraded to "lol, you owned the libs" and "lol, you owned the cons". Our cold civil war has left us in a state where half the country cheers whenever something bad happens to the other half of the country (I know it's not this stark, but let me have artistic license here). And some of that is real. It's hard to sit in a multicultural urban area where your rent is now 2/3 of your salary and give a rat's rear end about whatever Chuck Grassley has to say, just like I'm sure it's hard to sit in a burned over meth/opioid hellscape small town where the farmers all need second and third jobs to feed their kids and and give a gently caress about whatever Chuck Schumer has to say.

Maybe once upon a time there was an American identity, and maybe we were like a WWII movie where the guy from Brooklyn was interested in the life of the guy from Iowa and vice versa, but those days very much seem to be gone. And I'm pretty sure whatever fabled American identity there was only applied to those that pass the paper bag test.

And so we're left with tribalism and politics driven by "owning" the other side, where memes are about as deep as most people go. And where the conservative side is deliberately being feed insane propaganda to the point that 1 in 5 of them think that obvious bullshit like Q-anon is real. I'd love to both sides this, but there's nothing comparable on the other side.

So how the gently caress do we move forward with this?

How do we get a farm family struggling to get by to connect with a city family struggling to get by and realize that they really just want to have some security and feel like their kids have a future? How do we get them both to realize that both Chucks can go gently caress themselves and that the real fight is the people vs the wealthy, and that there's 99 of us for every 1 of them?

Personally, I think we're too far gone into our tribes and into a blue/red, urban/rural to come back. The US was too big/diverse to be governed well by adults, and the adults left the building a while ago. But man, would I LOVE to be wrong.
