Haha I remember kinda-sorta wanting an IOmega zip drive way back when, but it seemed way to expensive for what it was even before CD-Rs were common.

Also I can smell the cocaine coming off that dude in the opening clips.

Yeah, they were pretty cheap and super useful if you were, as I was at at the time, an on-site tech. I used to carry 2 of them because of the whole click of death thing. They were horribly cheaply built.

The expensive ones were the Jaz drives. Those would break if you looked at them funny, so forget putting one in your tool bag.

Brewery near me held a Black Mass with the Satanic Temple of Houston as a launch for their cult ($666 for $3 beers for life, bad with money on their part). Catholic Church weirdos are out every other weekend across the street protesting.

I had an internal Jaz drive in a PowerMac 9600. It ate the one Jaz disk I had, so I replaced it with an internal SyQuest 270 drive I got from God only knows where.

Good for you because, like the zip drives, a click of death drive will destroy all other disks it touches! And, a click of death'd disk has a good shot as destroying any drive you put it in too.

Those were fun times.

Plugging that POS into a parallel port, slamming a boot floppy and running guest.exe just so you could get the Compaq microchannel config tools running because you were installing a lovely new token ring card..........

It was better than playing games with jumpers to find a free IRQ and at least TWO ranges of base IO addresses for loving token ring cards. But not by much.

Yes, I was a front line tech in the mid 90s, but in rural eastern NC which was still IBM-land so I dealt with some poo poo. Token ring was the easiest of the weird stuff. I was mostly dealing with AS400s or larger and trying to make the lovely PCs of the time interface with them. Yay SNA server!

Jim Cramer talking about how there wouldn’t be communism because rich people make lots of money on the market is very on point for him. That man does not see anything outside the world of finance. Also hilarious to see him just yelling numbers around on what to buy. I’m sure all of that is based on extensive research on the companies he’s buying like a rational investor.

If we're comparing overheated markets in 1997 to now, remember that markets continued to run up for another 3 years after this documentary. You gonna go chicken and pull your money out now and lose years of gains?

No one knows when the next crash is coming, just that another one is coming, blah blah blah.

What percentage of calls were about failing zipdisks?

I'd say in a week or so when I was working 30 hours a week I'd probably get 1-2 click of deaths, it was a problem 100%, but nowhere near the amount of drives that everyoen makes it out to be. Sometimes it was assholes that thought any issue a zip drive had would be a free replacement. click of death drives would be replaced for free at any point, I think we also replaced all disks for no charge either

Generally it was troubleshooting parallels port issues (UGHHHH) and people with lovely USB controllers (Sony VAIO looking at you), and folks with lovely computers who couldn't' keep up with a 4x CD drive. The worst was people calling with loving tape drives, or iomega SCSI controllers with the jazz drives (Remember IRQ's and IRQ conflicts) I could do the basic troubleshooting in probably 10 mins. Reboot comptuer, check bios for working port(s)/ proper settings, boot from that into safemode, and remove the 25 extra USB / PPT controllers, reboot let the port drivers install and install the iomega drivers again. reboot and usually it worked. I was sad that eventually my company lost the contract for support and iomega moved it to India, I was moved to sony support, which SUuuucked, there was no brainpower at all. It was mostly, unplug, replug, nope broken, it'll be $xxx to fix and take 8 weeks, sure you can buy a new one for less but you see your tivo lifetime subscription is tied to the device, I can't guarantee TIVO will transfer it.

Some of my memorable calls:
"How good is the password encryption? Like can the cops get into it.. I'm not storing kiddy porn on it but I do have all my e-mails with a cops wife I"m seeing on there"
"I'm not good at measurin, do I use the side of the rule that goes to 12 or 30?" - trying to walk someone through Avery label printer software for CD burner (we didn't officially support but it was a slow day)
Drive was DOA from store: "Hear me out now, I know that like my car tires are good conductors, but is it possible that because I was driving and had a window open during a lightning storm that could have shorted the power supply?"
