To remove the racial aspect (which you shouldn't at all, but makes it easier to explain) On camera talent is generally paid more than the people behind the camera, it's not great but generally if you have a hit show losing some on camera is a lot worse than losing someone behind it. Bon Apetite asked/forced their behind camera people to also appear on camera without paying them extra. Which alone is severely hosed, we hired you for one job, but now we need you to do this second job, that is usually paid better than your first job, but we aren't giving you any extra money, and we still need you to do the job you were originally hired for. That alone is a bad situation. And then you bring in the fact that everyone asked to do this was a PoC because everyone making On Camera money was white and well...

It's been a long time since I watched it, but I always thought it was very diverse (loved Sohla and her father a LOT) - oh and Gaby is always a delight!, but yup Corporations gonna Corp. I was under the impression the whole channels staff were on big stacks making content in a New York City highrise commercial kitchen. Please don't tell me there's a photo of Brad in a Nazi uniform.

Skwirl posted:To remove the racial aspect (which you shouldn't at all, but makes it easier to explain) Yep. It was a situation that was not at all surprising if you have worked in production. They started off doing their YT channel as a side aspect of their business, so lots of the people on staff were excited to be a part of it as a fun way to get some on-camera exposure. But then the YT channel took off, and the benefits of that only were spread to the marquee names, mainly Brad and Claire. And to be honest I doubt there was that much benefit for them either, I am guessing that is why Claire quit and then re-negotiated. But after the CEO was shown to be a racist dick, the inequality between the (white) big names and the (not all white) side characters on the shows took on a more sinister cast than it might have otherwise. I think that no one there was prepared for their success, and when the bigger money started rolling in it was not distributed evenly (like every production ever), and because of the CEO and his reluctance to promote non-white people, none of those people enjoyed any of the windfalls that did come. The thing that made that channel fun, which was the on-the-fly, winging it, hanging-out-in-the-office feel of the shows, was also what made it unable to scale successfully and why it fell apart. I was under the impression the whole channels staff were on big stacks making content in a New York City highrise commercial kitchen. It seems to have been a racist power structure problem rather than a "problematic on-camera people" problem, if that makes sense. Claire, Carla, Molly and some others left and started their own things, which are fine but don't have the same charm. Brad stayed and pushed for a new, more diverse staff, but his show has lost its magic as well, probably because they fired the editor (Hunzi) for speaking up about inequalities. It is a shame, it was a fun channel and I liked the personalities a lot. But it was built on the (racist) sand, I guess. Ishamael has a new favorite as of 13:55 on Feb 18, 2021 |

The fact that the production was actually unequal as poo poo should be extremely unsurprising. Neoliberal spaces should be safely assumed to be "like that" unless very very thoroughly proven otherwise.

I find Babish pretty obnoxious—is her show different in vibe? The guy started out good but then began buying into his own hype and got real cute with his content and I had to bounce.

I mean, cooking-wise probably, but I felt like it was pretty entertaining when he was just making bad foods from movies and TV. But he pretty quickly ran out of good ones and without the novelty factor we were just left with his bad personality. I'll check out that other channel though. Warbird posted:Idgaf about that channel/company, but is the lady that makes fancy knockoffs of junk food still cool? e: Claire's new channel is fun but lacks the "challenge" competition show feeling of her junk food show. He’s been doing a now long running series on “basics” that’s actually been fairly helpful for ideas or filling in gaps in knowledge. Not saying it’s must watch programming but it’s entertaining enough and vaguely educational. Pretty sure he’s running out of subjects though; we can’t all be Alton Brown.

What's dumb is that BA had a textbook 'Friends' scenario. Matthew Perry and Courtenay Cox may have been the A-tier stars, and the others not so much, but they paid everyone equally because it was the ensemble that made the show. So sure, Gaby wasn't the one making 5-million-view videos on Oreos, but without her popping up, the kitchen is not the same, the videos aren't as fun, etc..

I think the biggest issue with her new stuff is that she is focusing her videos only on recipes from her recent cook book. That type of content is kind of dry and is at a basic level instructional content. The gourmet makes stuff was mostly entertainment focused on how she dealt with the challenge with instruction sprinkled in.

The criminaliztion of horny distribution only supports the unethical production of horny while doing nothing to curtail the demand for it. Only when the production of horny is collectivized in the hands of the workers can there be truly ethical horny.
