Elba was in the dogshit Dark Tower adaptation, he is definitely not above this.

I initially misread this as Elba BEING dogshit in that film and was gonna object, he's the best part (McConaughey is surprisingly bad as Flagg, in all honesty) but good god was that movie a classic case of Hollywood trying to pick a brand name and batter the square peg into the round hole. They clearly wanted to chase the YA, Hunger Games/Harry Potter crowd and that's not really what the Dark Tower is.

I mean, gently caress, one of the most well-known lines from the series is "The man in black fled across the desert, and the gunslinger followed." The film has that line done in voiceover... over a shot of FLAGG CHASING ROLAND.

I think a problem with doing a young Constantine series is that he needs that background where he knows everyone and everyone owes him one for some event or other. Actually watching him have to build that network seems like it would be boring.

It's about time for my once per decade ban for being a consistently terrible poster.
Being white actually helps the entire point of his character, that of being a privileged monster that skates from pretty much all consequence while everyone around him gets burned to the ground. The specificity of his appearance as, you know, Sting is much less crucial. Same with the punk rock roots now that it's not the 80s. So hey, minorities should get the chance to play more nuanced villains in cinema, so I'm all for it.

Making him young does scream this adaption is going to be dogshit though, yeah.

yeah, that movie didn’t deserve Elba. I remember being over the moon when his casting was announced. I was totally on board, and then the actual movie came out and welp.

Like I said, McConaughey is the one you can argue underperformed, although it could just be bad direction. But Flagg's supposed to be this charismatic devil figure, this magnetic showman who corrupts all he comes in contact with and he plays it with this... apathy that just sucks your interest away from him in every scene.

tbh i don't actually care about a constantine show, but on the hand it's crappy that matt ryan is not gonna get to reprise his role, on the other i really like him being on the legends. on the other other this news may impact whether he continues to want to be on the legends

Here's a fun fact, the original Hellblazer comic gives his birthday as May 10th, 1953. So if his comics ran in real time he would be 68 this year.

Orca lady?
How about John Boyega?
Hell do a crossover with legends and the keanu flick and get Sting and Emma Thompson in there and have just reveal that in every universe's John looks like a different famous person.

Ryan has been Constantine for 7 years now. It's okay to replace him for this show, especially if it's not connected to any of the other stuff.

I've seen shit you people wouldn't believe. Cop cars on fire off the shoulder of I-94. I watched search lights glitter in the dark near the Ambassador Bridge. All those moments will be lost in time, like piss in the drain. Time to retch.

Yeah it was a miracle he got a second and third shot, and he nailed it but HBO Max is (or at least should be if it's meant to compete with the Disney+ stuff) the big time, they gotta pull a big time player. We're fully in the era of streaming now, almost no one is "above" starring in a streaming series.

Plus if they wanna do a stunt later you get Ryan and Keanu in there as a multiverse thing.

It's the racism of low expectations to think a POC couldn't both make a bunch of friends and then betray them spectacularly by their mid twenties as well as a white man.

He was aging in real time back in the original series. He turned 40 and 50 in the comic and then they clicked things up to put him back in the regular DCU.

The comic was strong enough even before she got her power to literally break the fourth wall!

... but admittedly, having an encyclopedic knowledge of the MCU isn't that useful when the characters are keeping so few secrets to begin with. Maybe she could walk between sets and also steal things from the prop department.

Some teeth long for ripping, gleaming wet from black dog gums. So you keep your eyes closed at the end. You don't want to see such a mouth up close. before the bite, before its oblivion in the goring of your soft parts, the speckled lips will curl back in a whinny of excitement. You just know it.

Wanda referencing quarantine is a cute gag but it raises so many stupid questions. They had COVID-19 in the MCU? Is it COVID-23 there? Tony invented nanotech before he died, how quick did they get a vaccine out? Is that why Wanda -- who was alive for three weeks before the show started -- knows about quarantines but we don't see anyone wearing masks or anything?

I'm nitpicking for the fun of it, but at least these are amusing questions to consider.

There definitely has to be someone whose entire friend group just didn't die minus maybe one person, but they weren't very close so him just dropping off the planet isn't too surprising.

I always thought it was a smart move that Marvel explained the crazy level of crime in NY as a product of the city getting hosed all to hell by a major alien invasion. Most people who could afford to leave probably did, leaving a lot more desperate and traumatized people to live in the blasted shell of the city, with a black market of salvaged alien stuff and shady real estate projects creating a new avenue for people to survive or even get a leg up. It's something that the Netflix shows (and Spiderman Homecoming) did a great job of layering in. In aggregate, it painted a picture of a place that still had good branding, but was boiling under the surface with WMD level weapons dealing, corrupt political strong-arming, private military contractors run amok, and various criminal and occult organizations jockeying for power in the newly upturned city. This doesn't even get into the subtextual likelihood that SHIELD(HYDRA) could have been behind any number of these endeavors in order to justify political goals, like how the Reagan era CIA dumped crack cocaine into urban centers to fill off-books budgets and justify increased anti-gang, anti-black, anti-welfare policies under the auspices of being tough on crime and escalating the War on Drugs.
