I suspect Nintendo is against the idea of permanent ownership of any of its titles and operates its books on something similar to the old Disney vault idea, where they want to be able to guarantee fairly constant income for its back catalog without really having to do anything with them. It's also why you never see them discount any of their titles, so Breath of the Wild is still a full $60 game (and at its cheapest I think was only $40 for Black Friday) whereas God of War, a considerably newer game on PS4, is $20 as its baseline price and goes on even deeper sales than that (down to $10 I believe?), and the vast majority of Sony's catalog more than 6 months old has been on sale for below $40 at some point by now. It's just how Nintendo decided to operate, and it works for them so they have no real incentive to change. Their Switch online subscription back catalog was the best way for them to guarantee anyone still wanting to play Super Mario Bros. 1 would be paying them something for the privilege.

It's exactly this. Nintendo doesn't have any specific aversion to BC, they just have Disney's aversion to devaluing their catalogue, and their decisions flow from that.

As of today Codemasters now belongs to EA. Given that they have some great IPs I really hope they don't get tasked with just making Need For Speed games but if they happen to go on sale again sometime soon, their most recent releases prior to the acquisition that I would recommend are Dirt 2.0 (hardcore rally sim with a lot of DLC, so definitely worth waiting for a sale on the super ultimate mega ultra edition or whatever it's called) and the GRID reboot which is by no means perfect but does scratch a particular itch if you miss old Sega arcade racers, with the game feeling quite like a modern version of them.

There is also the separate DIRT series (more arcade-based compared to the sim-heavy 1.0 & 2.0) with the most recent release being DIRT 5 but I think those games have lost their way personally, although DIRT 2 & DIRT 3 are great games and I think the latter is available via BC?

They were bought because they have all the big racing assn licenses and ea wants more cheap yearly games with built in audiences
I doubt they get changed very much unless their niche dries up

I said come in!

The one plus side to this is that all Codemaster games will be on EA's gamepass.

Unless the audience for their games has endless growth they will definitely get interfered with at some point.

I used to love that NES game, but I don't remember much about the brand that wouldn't be just "Forza but Small."

Also, it's mildly distressing to realize that the Micro Machines game came out 30 years ago

They want F1.

That's literally it.

Expect everything else to die on the vine.

Edit: this is going to be weird to see Codies die because it's been a joke for decades in the UK games industry that everybody - and I mean everybody - that goes through UK game dev scene has or will work for Codemasters at some point. Except me because I turned them down at the start of my career to work at a shovelware shop making DS and Wii games because of the work/life balance. Our games loving sucked.

I really loved that multiplayer map in the villa, where one team starts on the roof and the other in the garage. It would be great seeing more vertical design like that in multiplayer games and a nice refresher after years and years of three-lane design philosophy.

I think there was talk of a true sequel to Bioshock rather than infinite.

yeah honestly both vegas games are good. I mean full disclosure back in the day I bought basically every one of the tom clancy games when they came out because I'm stupid as gently caress. but they have that weird rear end mid/late-2000s syndrome where aiming or looking around feels like you're cranking a tank turret by hand and every action has 3 seconds of input delay for absolutely no reason. also aiming sucks in all of those games and you just end up strafing around entire city levels hipfiring at people and ordering your squad to go stand in the middle of the desert because they just won't get the gently caress out of your way

playing them today makes me sad that we won't ever get another SOCOM game

Bioshock 1 was a significant game for me, but I didnt get around to finishing 2. what made it better in your opinion?

i didnt like infinite much but I did finish it, although got a bit fed up with it and was just rushing through to complete it rather than getting all the collectables.

2 had the killer feature of being able to use plasmids and guns at the same time. Once you do that it’s really hard to go back to the first one.
It’s also not drawn out endlessly like the first game. I think the writing in 2, especially the DLC, is better than 1 and light years better than Infinite.

I loved bioshock one and two, but I played infinite and just instantly hated it. I checked the reviews which were all really positive as I remember, I felt like I must have been suffering from under-sea nostalgia - because I really couldn’t get into that sky poo poo. One of the only times I’ve ever played a well reviewed game and found absolutely nothing of value in it at all.

I was considering buying the remaster (for the first 2) but I checked out some videos and it looked worse than the original. Anyone play them, and Is it worth it? Seemed embarrassingly low effort

Bioshock Infinite is a very weird game when you think about the insanely high reviews it got (I think it had something like a 93 or 94 on Metacritic) versus what the totality of the game is like.

It STARTS insanely strong in terms of world building and potentially making you feel like you're potentially playing the then-greatest game ever but it goes to hell once the shooting starts and hoo boy does the story line get really gross as the game goes on.

It was also one of the first high profile games which had an invincible NPC escort and given that other games of that era frequently had NPCs that would get themselves stuck or killed leading to a fail state made a bunch of gamers (and by extension reviewers) really happy, although if you stopped and looked at how Elizabeth is portrayed and all the storyline surrounding it it's intensely hosed up.

It's possibly the only game where you can shoot lightning at a teenager's menstrual blood.

It's secretly possibly the game that best highlights many of the worst aspects of video games, which is especially impressive for a game with no online multiplayer or microtransactions.

Bioshock Infinite was really disappointing because this gameplay trailer looked so fun with that huge combat arena and ziplines but I played a good chunk of the game and never encountered any of this content or anything remotely like it which was such a disappointment. I don't know if maybe it was a level late in the game? I just remember being disappointed and eventually giving up because this looked awesome but the final game was nothing like it:

I haven't played the game since it was new. I THINK that was in the game but it's not really a very interactive sequence, it goes into rail shooter mode which you can kind of tell if you look for it. I think all the jumps etc. are pre-determined and you can't deviate from them.

I'm pretty certain there were at least a couple combat arenas that allowed for a lot of the zipline action, sort of like Doom/Eternal with the jump pad arenas where you're just constantly on the move from one spot to another.

The PC versions had all sorts of bugs and inconsistencies at launch to the point where even years later people where telling me to just play the original version. I’m not sure the remastered versions really warranted existing anyway, beyond just being a re-release for next gen consoles.

That particular battle wasn't in the game at all. There were a few relatively small arenas you could zip around in, but ultimately the scale and variability you saw in that video was nowhere to be found.
