I don't know if the whole thing was just procedural random chance, but I was exploring in the Black Forest and some skeletons tipped me off to a slightly hard to see Burial Chamber that had a big rock perfectly blocking the entrance. I pickaxed the rock out and went in, and there were 18 surtling cores inside! The richest chache I've found by nearly double. I'd like to think it was extra juicy because the rock was hiding it, but who knows.

Thanks for the details. Some of the hardware specs I've seen call for 4 cores but that seemed like a lot for a dedicated box. I couldn't find anything official.

I usually use OVH. It's a really good French cloud & generic hosting provider, they have a worldwide datacenter presence, they don't bill for bandwidth (in OR out), and they've been around for like 20 years. I have several servers with them, I highly recommend them. For a while they were super popular for seed boxes but they kind of culled that.

Their VPSs are here: https://us.ovhcloud.com/vps/compare/

At the same time, Nitroserv goes for the same price (but you don't have root access) so I ended up going with that because it literally took 3 minutes and I can afford 2€/month (we're sharing the renting price 5 ways).

You need them to build portals, wards, and to make frost resistance mead later on.

Honestly, though, you'll end up with way more than you could possibly want of the drat things, and the frankly insane greydwarf spawn rates make it easy as hell to get more of them anyway, so feel free to pollute the sea with them.

Honestly, you don't need all that much fancy stuff to survive there, and once you have the item from the third boss, you can quickly start gathering the ores needed for the mountain tier weapons and armor. I'd suggest going there as soon as you have defeated Bonemass, and made some frost resistance brews.

However, and you are getting this in bold because it is kind of crucial: Do not go into the mountains without the Well Rested buff. And if it's about to expire, start planning a way to a resting place asap.
Stamina is twice as important in the mountains than any of the other biomes, the mobs there will rip you apart in seconds if they catch you out when you're exhausted. It also lets you climb some surprisingly steep slopes, but if you run out, you're sliding down all the way in an instant.
Other than that, it's probably my favorite biome in the game. Most of the mobs you'll face are deadly, but not very tanky, so you're rewarded for quick reactions, and it's fun to jump around and look at the views.

I think the main trick for that fight is playing peek-a-boo around the altar. Bonemass is slow as gently caress and as long as you don't get too close to him or stay in his line of sight for too long, he won't spew poison or chuck out his adds. So you can just stay on the opposite side of the altar for as long as it takes to heal up/regain your stamina without having to worry about running around clubbing skellies and blobs as well. It makes for a slow, gruelling fight if solo, but it worked for me.

I've also heard some people bring a hoe and level the area near the altar before the fight, so that you don't need to trudge through so much water. Might be worth a shot (although in my case, the area immediately around the altar was solid anyway, so that was enough for me).

Better food is definitely important, though, yeah (I think I went with sausages, jam and roast meat). Also make sure you've got a portal nearby so you can get well-rested at your base first.

DreadCthulhu posted:

Getting tin is actually not that bad, since you don't need that much of it compared to copper (bronze is 2 copper + 1 tin), and it's reasonably abundant. It can also be gathered quickly since each deposit can be mined in just a few hits and will always give you several ores.

Copper, on the other hand, sucks rear end, no two ways about it. You have to hit it a lot to break through, and often you'll only get stone for your troubles. One way to make copper mining a bit more fun is to aggro a troll and have him bash the poo poo out of the vein for you (sidenote - it'd be great if they added a way to 'tame' trolls so you could put them work doing exactly this). Just make sure you're not included in the bashing. Also, an important thing to note about copper veins is that they extend for quite a ways underground, so what you see on the surface is usually not the whole thing.

Can I just skip the swamp?

I've got enough iron for tier 3 iron armour but I still don't know where the boss is and am getting kind of tired of swamps.

Took some frost potions to the mountains and found 2 mountain boss locations but no silver, sniped some plains monsters but can't refine the ores. Am I locked out of higher tier gear until I find the swamp boss?

Swamp boss spoilers: The item he drops is what allows you to find the silver underground in the mountains and other treasures. TECHNICALLY you could level the entire mountain biome looking for the silver but.... I wouldn't recommend it

Look for the green torches but I had to search 5 swamps before finally landing on the one that had crypts in it. I think these zones are just more likely to spawn in smaller areas, at least that's how it is in my seed.

You could always just console cheat yourself the wishbone, the thing you need in order to find silver, but that could be a difficult door to close once open. Honestly, if I went the console route, I'd probably just skip to the end of the whole process and spawn the actual gear itself.

There's a lot of weirdness with crypt placement. Sometimes you'll find a vast swamp biome with none at all, and other times you'll find a tiny little swampy island with about 5 practically piled on top of each other. Just keep looking and you're bound to find some eventually. Like others have said, look for glowing green torches in the distance as this usually signifies a crypt (not always though - sometimes you'll see them next to sunken structures and other kinds of ruins as well).
