they mentioned modding support in the pc gamer interview:

quote:

Modding: There are 20 years of Diablo 2 mods out there at this point, and Diablo 2: Resurrected will still allow modding. But it won't work exactly the same way, since modern Battle.net is stricter and more secure. Gallerani pointed to .DLL injections as something you could do with classic Diablo 2 that you can't do with D2R. However, he also said that many parts of the game that once required those kinds of invasive mods to modify have been shifted into easily modifiable data, so modders will still be able to access them despite Battle.net's tighter security.

but that's vague so I'm not expecting much

my wishlist item is an option for multiplayer loot assignment so it isn't a free-for-all clickfest or pickit script contest. it'd be cool to join random pub games and still have a chance to see drops without being hypercompetitive about it. also the stash changes are nice but you're still gonna need mules if you seriously get into farming stuff. I've been spoiled by plugy

I think the modding potential depends on just how much stuff that used to be hardcoded is moved into editable data. If it's good, hopefully it'll reinvigorate the modding scene. I imagine the big ones like path of diablo and project d2 would try and port over if it's easy enough. Not so sure about something like median sigma though.

I've been playing Diablo the Hell 2 and quite enjoying it, it's a nice change of pace especially after playing path of exile.

If you aren't committed to 1.14d and are willing to play 1.13c, slashdiablo's launcher can auto patch down, apply hd mod, and comes with a maphack+loot filter if you want it. I don't believe 1.14d actually does anything if you're playing single player. I'm not sure how plugy support is in 1.13c.

If you are committed to 1.14d you can just play in 4:3 but bigger: you can play fullscreen which is awkward, you can double click the window title I think, you can use glide wrapper which will cause your mouse cursor to jump when you open/close windows, you can use autohotkey to resize the window (best option imo, I'll post the script I use if anyone wants - it adjusts mouse sens when tabbed into d2 to match desktop, can lock mouse to window, and auto resizes d2 windows to a set resolution. also lets you hotkey specific d2 windows if you're a giant nerd), you can play in a virtual machine (not a good option anymore because virtualbox devs broke the sound driver and the working old version doesn't work on windows 10 since last summer).

Other good options are playing ProjectD2 or Path of Diablo. Both are like second expansions rather than total conversions. Despite the latter's name, it's not like PoE it just steals a few things.

after their recent fiascos, esp. the warcraft 3 reforged turd, i'd set the bar very low and take a long wait and see approach to the whole thing.

It's interesting how you can see bits of path of exile in each of the big d2 mods, but it's almost always just fun little gameplay bits and not all the 5,000,000 bits of poe bloat you get with actual poe.

They're actually not bad they just scaled them without respecting aspect ratio on the preview site for some inexplicable reason. It's really obvious on the sorc & druid.

Druid example:

The site is on the left. Unbelievable that this is the first impression they want people to have when the assets are legitimately good.

They're still pretty bad, I get that 2020 was a rough year, but man, they all look 20 years older now. These characters should be younger, simply put - be in their prime. 40+ is retirement age for anyone doing actual combat.

This to me what what they should aim for, also probably one of my favorite artworks for the game.

And for shits.

Amazon: (Was 25, now 45.) Is definitely the worst of the lot. Aged poorly, looks like she started smoking and drinking.
Assassin: (20 to 40) Apparently changed from Eastern European to Asian, but at least she has a better skin tone now, before she was pale as a ghost. Seems unnecessary.
Necromancer: (50 to 70) Actually looks not bad, but I don't understand why he needed to age 20-30 years...
Barbarian: (25 to 45) Needs more muscle. Changed from Mr. Olympia to an out of season bodybuilder that started eating pizza and drinking beer and still trying to remain relevant...
Paladin: (30 to 50) Looks okay I guess but needs to be younger, but whats up with changing the hairstyle from the original, etc... Unnecessary change.
Sorceress: (15 to 35) Actually looks the best from the sorry lot, kinda like that she looks more mature (in a better way than the rest). But again these are changes that were not needed.
Druid: (40 to 60) Looks like he's seen some poo poo, apparently the homeless hobo junkie look are in for him now.

Already seen some much improved fan-made photoshops.

Amazon is the worst, she looks like that one older lady from Glee, or maybe someone that has spend the last decade of her life chain smoking in a Vegas casino
Barb has like, no muscle definition anymore which is odd for a Barb. Needs to be more Conan, less rowdy football fan.
Assassin is alright I guess, I can't remember if she was always supposed to be Asian or not though
Paladin would be good if he got a haircut, any maybe fixed his nose because it almost looks broken.
Druid looks like a homeless Irish man, but then again he is a Druid so it kind of works.
Necro and Sorceress look pretty great though.

I like the Barb look because he has Butterbean's physique, which is what you'd have if you were physically strong. The Mr. Universe bodybuilder look may look more impressive but if you look at lifting competitions, the competitors all look like brick shithouses and not like Arnold.

I think they all look fine. All those fan changes have major "clean faces in Skyrim" and "light skinned Redguards" mod vibes and I hate them.

It's not so inexplicable, I think: the reason is that they're all cropped from the shot where they're standing in a row, so the ones at the edges are subject to more rectilinear perspective distortion. So Druid gets it worst for being way on the right.

... Insert something brilliantly witty here.
Whole lotta unpleasantness (including some stuff that's really starting to go transphobic) about the Amazon look. Guess people can't cope with an older-looking woman in the game representing a class, everything must be eye candy.

(Edit: I've actually thrown up diablo 2 quickly on the intro screen, the amazon actually reads pretty obviously as an older woman on that as well!)

And yeah, I'm pretty sure the assassin has always been Asian-coded, with the original having a somewhat unfortunate literal-yellow-tone to skin. The new design is a lot better.

Yeah. If you look at the in-game shots of the barb in the deep dive, for instance, he just looks like an actual big fighter. He'd wreck someone's day.
I think the thing throwing people as well is that on the website version, the lighting is actually pretty harsh and severe.

The right hand side image is a pre-rendered model. They did right by showing the ingame model. Pre-renders can have insane fidelity.

You could still be right about the aspect ratio. In this example, it's hard to tell if it's off or if the ingame model has different proportions from the concept art.

Olpainless

One thing I will say that's genuinely impressive is it seems that they internal game logic is still going to be based off the 2D game, but literally re-render that as needed to the new 3d version. That's a pretty cool technical trick. And the sheer amount of love that's coming from the art team is really, really nice.

Yea, the art and characters look fine. And regardless of these character’s actual age they all partake in a lot of manual labor, meaning combat, in a variety of climate conditions. If you’ve ever seen a 28 year old roofer, he looks 45. Plus it’s such a petty complaint that feels like complaining for complaining sake.

I like the footage they’ve shown because it looks really smooth and the lighting looks phenomenal. Lastly, we still have the classic versions to play if folks actually hate it.

The Amazon shouldn't look overly feminine, IMHO. Design-wise, Blizzard's females have often had plenty of androgenous features. And "Amazon" has obvious and long-standing connotations of female masculinity. She's supposed to be physically powerful and not some delicate young thing.

I don't think the thread police ought to be palming their digital nightsticks quite yet, though. No one wrote anything outrageous or deliberately nasty. At least that's how I see it.
