Such a thing is impossible. We can't prove that we exist, nevermind that other people do.

As regards DnD talk I once made the profoundly stupid decision to try and run a DnD game for 9+ people who were learning the system over facebook chat. It was an absolute pissing disaster.

This is a weird post.

I'm hedging my bets by being in arrears with Labour while still paying my dues to Momentum. When my Labour membership expires (6 months people are saying? Haven't checked) then I guess I'll have to quit Momentum too. Or if a leadership challenge happens inside that time I can still pay up and vote for whatever half decent candidate.

E: I'm more optimistic than most of this thread about electoralism but still pretty drat pessimistic. I hope the SCG does a Pasokification

To be fair, sometimes it's the rogue.

I've run/ran several games over lockdown. All over discord + roll20 and it generally works well for us. Groups have varied in size from 4-7 players. There's always going to be a bit of 'oh no you go first' but if the group has good chemistry (even new groups!) usually sort themselves out and get into it after a few sessions. I've found video chat to be more effort than it's worth, to be honest. Loads more issues than just voice chat.

CoolCab posted:

oh christ do not try to run dnd via video chat. discord, because it has clearer ways to minimize crosstalk (which like you say is your #1 priority) and roll20. no more than six players, ideally about four. and be prepared to have some kind of, gentleman's agreement or quasi metagame thing where you all agree to share and rotate DM attention and talking time even out of combat.

Systems where there's a bit of a turn order help for this. Fellowship has the Spotlight system where the DM turns focus to a certain player, works well for keeping everyone engaged even online

I had been a member of the labour for most of my adult life and it honestly breaks your loving brain. I've stopped paying my dues but every now and I then I'm like "maybe I should stay, maybe this time I can help change for the better". But it never happens because it's a fundamentally broken instruction gummed up with dickheads who base their entire identity off enjoying the west wing and reading the observer.

The tabletop rpg talk is pretty timely for me, one of my friends has started a game and yeah, we're hitting a lot of the stumbling blocks others have mentioned doing it over discord. He's never DM'd before and didn't want to leave anyone in our gaming group out so he's running a game with 7 people who have a pretty varied level of experience with playing these sort of games so he has definitely chosen hard mode.

Yeah, every now and then I'm like "maybe I should re-join and go to meetings or even run to be a councillor or something and be a small vehicle for grassroots change in the party" but then another story drops about the tidal wave of poo poo that prevents anyone from doing anything good ever and I realise I don't have anything like the energy required to fight against that.

I think it's genuinely worth remembering how organisationally crippled Labour is as a vehicle for any of the purposes of a political party, let alone a left-wing one. Kinnock and Blair destroyed its functionality, destroyed the tools necessary to rebuild its functionality, and essentially turned it into a machine for petty middle-management bigots to be paid to bully people. Most of the left's victories over the past thirty years have been despite Labour as an organisation, not because of it, even when those lefties were members of Labour. It desperately needs to go the way of the Liberal Party if we want some shot at political representation.

Like, seriously, I'm on benefits due to chronic disabilities. In 2015, the Labour Shadow Secretary for Work And Pensions (the public's leading democratic representative against the government in matters related to welfare) said that her party should and would not represent people like me in the upcoming general election, at a time when the UK was facing international condemnation for human rights abuses against us. She's now the Shadow Cabinet Secretary, one of the leadership's most visible and prolific spokespeople. Labour is built to serve the same institutional purpose as the Guardian - to absorb and crush upsurges of progressivism and lend an air of bipartisanship to systemic bigotry.

I left after Kinnock and Blair removed power from party members, but then rejoined when OMOV for the leadership gave members a single route to power. The trouble is that it takes a left leader a few years to get control of other party bodies, so a leader who resigns after four years is effectively useless.

I'm staying while the potential for Labour to elect a left leader is still there, but we really need a younger and more determined candidate.
