How is the game on Steam? I've been considering buying this game but I'm not sure if I want to buy it on Steam, PS4, or Switch.

Oh wait maybe this answers my question.

I just got a crash an hour in and lost thirty minutes of progress (which I guess isn't a lot, but still more than I'd like, especially since it happened so soon) so now I'm debating refunding on Steam and getting it on a potentially more stable platform. Of course, it could just be me.

On that note, has anyone else playing the PC version gotten crashes? I'd prefer to keep playing on PC but not if crashes will be regular (especially since the game doesn't autosave).

Ugh the part of the game when you go to the beach at Okinawa (the fourth jail town, spoilered just to be safe) got me realizing how much this whole 'road trip with friends, hanging out eating delicious food and stuff' plot has me seriously missing doing that this past year. Uggggh.

pretty wild how that aspect is the biggest form of escapism in the game at this point :(

I've only just started playing, but Ryuji's english VA has been knocking it out of the park, I don't remember him being this good in P5. Though I dunno if it's just me but sometimes the bgm during the cutscenes drowns out what he's saying, like he's trying to speak under his breath and doing it TOO well.

I can confirm from my recent P5R playthrough that Ryuji's VA is extremely good there, too. Max Mittelman does good work.

I've heard there were COVID-related dubbing difficulties with Strikers and some of the mixing might not be quite right which could be why Ryuji sometimes sound quieter than he should.

The mixing is noticeably bad and it happens all the time with lines from other characters as well.

Yeah P5's cast is pretty star-studded (Cherami Leigh, Matt Mercer, Erica Lindbeck and Cassandra Lee Morris are all pretty big VAs) but as someone who hadn't even heard of Mittleman before P5 he's still far and away the star of the cast. I mean everyone is good, but he really stands out.

Mittelman also plays Red XIII in FF7 Remake and knocks it out of the park. Looking forward to hearing more of him in part 2 whenever that is.

Yeah, to me this is the best part of the game by far. Going to towns and seeing the sights, hanging out with bros. the plot/gameplay are auxiliary. Perfect timing but also sad

That's disappointing, I was hoping using headphones or something might help. At least the subs/dialog boxes are easy to read, tho the in combat chatter is nearly impossible to follow. I wish more games had seperate volume controls for bgm/sound effects/dialog.

After struggling through the first "real" miniboss (I won but had to use a lot of items) I get the impression that you're supposed to use a lot of those melee combos that end in elemental attacks to exploit the enemy's weakness (since otherwise you run out of SP super fast)? I also had some trouble with dodging attacks. Some were clearly telegraphed, but I couldn't figure out others. It's kind of hard to keep an eye on what the enemy is doing while you're executing combos that cause you to move around a bunch. I'm wondering if it might make sense to be more passive and just wait for the bosses/mini-bosses to do attacks and then get in some of my own afterwards.

I enjoy Makoto's thing where she drives the bike into enemies.

I'm still at the "find clues" segment of the second dungeon, but yeah, this escapism rules. If the dub hadn't been delayed and this came out in like April 2020 then it would've combo'd beautifully with Animal Crossing.

I'm nearing the end of the game (I think) on hard mode and I pretty much only straight-up use raw persona abilities for either crowd control, interrupting, or an oh poo poo button. I usually bounce in by following up gunshots and take advantage of the fact that an aerial combo will always end with an elemental persona attack if you end it with special, and then I dash away and repeat. Some fights take a while but I've only game-overed to a "protect futaba" sequence or to optional bosses so far.

Again a very likpatous story
I bought this game and haven't played Persona 5 at all. I'm not too lost honestly, though some things took me by surprise ("This loving cat just turned into a car") and I am still sort of unsure how much Sojiro knows, he hears them talking openly about being Phantom Thieves but at the same time he's all "Gosh who knows what these wacky kids are up to."

Here is my opinion of the characters, from me being halfway through the first Jail. Er, opinion of them as characters, not opinion on how they play in battle:

Awesome, the best: Futaba, Ryuji

Like them, but haven't been too impressive yet: Yusuke, Ann

Oh yeah, these characters exist, I guess: Makoto, Haru

Morgana doesn't rank because he's a weird mascot thing, and Sophia is cute and I like her scenes but she doesn't have a lot of character yet.

I'm enjoying the game so far but keeping track of other party members HP/SP and any potential status effects in an action combat game is rough. I actually haven't changed my party members either so it's still Ryuji/Morgana/Sophia at the moment, I haven't even touched the others. I'm sure that will change when I get to minboss/boss characters with specific weaknesses that I'll want to swap to other characters for, though. I also find myself basically just always playing as Joker. Finding out his moveset varies for every Persona he can equip does feel like a bit much though, so it's already kind of like I'm playing multiple characters.

And while the original battle music is good, I can't help but change it to the Revelations: Persona battle track. "Dancin' crazy, Joker!"

I kinda wish there was just an option to directly restore your HP/SP from checkpoints. That's predominantly what you use them for anyway, would be nice to skip a couple loading screens.

I imagine it's because jumping back into the Jail also resets your Showtime meter, respawns enemies and gives you the chance to turn in requests. I get that it's a 'well it really does nothing, doesn't it', but it's just a part of the system that's gonna have to be handled.

That could have easily been handwaved with a couple lines of dialogue about how the checkpoints can revitalize the party, but they do so by revitalizing the entire area, so all the shadows will be back and your meters reset. It's not a huge deal but it would have been a nice QoL addition.

The bigger encounters absolutely wreck face, huh? The boss by the third prison cage in the first dungeon dropped Joker in under a minute and I had to do hit and run with Morgana to win. I guess that's one way to teach you need to actually dodge.

e. Haru's "gently caress the police", to a police officer, with a smile on her face. :allears:

Game has politely informed me that i've reached the point of no return.

Honestly my biggest gripes with the game are pretty much the warden fights. That's not to say that there aren't other design choice issues that are loving annoying to deal with, but the warden fights are straight up the only thing that made me actively not enjoy the game.

Items in the first dungeon are a precious commodity, especially revival items since Morgana and Sophie don't learn Recarm til towards the end of the second dungeon.

I think at some point I got a Recarm skill card and slapped it onto Arsene.

I really like Yusuke a lot, I'm just waiting for a moment where he goes from "This guy is pretty cool" to "This guy is my bro." People here seem to really like Haru so I'm glad she'll get to be cool soon! And hopefully, at some point, Makoto will develop a personality of some sort.

The only really annoying thing I've found about leaving the dungeon partway through is you can't leave the area Cafe Leblanc is in, so you can't go to the stores in the city. And unless the vending machines by the laundromat refill when you go back to the dungeon, that means you can't buy any SP restoration items. I mean, yeah, the sodas are only an effective 20 SP restoration, but that's still better than zero.

ApplesandOranges
Jun 22, 2012

SP restoration is definitely your gatekeep for the first dungeon (that and revival items). It gets a little easier after that.

Haru mostly suffered in P5 by being a very late addition to the party (so she doesn't get as much fleshing out or group scenes) and she had some kinda overused lines that could get a bit grating (maybe it's just me but every time she said 'my father' in P5 it just twigged something in me). She's still pretty cool though and since she's available from the start here it lets her character breathe more organically.
