The answer is, mate, because I want to do you slowly. There has to be a bit of sport in this for all of us. In the psychological battle stakes, we are stripped down and ready to go. I want to see those ashen-faced performances; I want more of them. I want to be encouraged. I want to see you squirm.

Also, I don't know if anyone else has experienced this but sometimes easy AI settle an island even when you tell them not to. I figured out it only happens when you're viewing a session other than the one in which they are trying to expand. So when you get the pop-up asking permission to expand, click the button to view the island first. It'll take you to the right session and then when you decline they will actually stop.

I've had this too, but I figured it was related to the AI being repeatedly told no - eventually they just start ignoring you. But I could be wrong

Imagine playing Anno 1800 without the sound of Margaret Hunt's cackles echoing through your burning cities.

Imagine not hearing Alonso Graves threaten to shove a feather up your nostrils.

You are clearly blatant Wibblyists, and I will hear no more of it!

Seriously though, 3 copper on the whole map? Did you play on expert or something? They returned how map generation works in one of the recent patches to prevent that sort of thing. Still... only 3? That is insane. You can get some trade union guys to pump up your numbers if possible.

My NPC Cadre is the pirates for awesome trading opportunities, and then Hugo Mercier for his unique items plus Beryl O'Mara and Artur Gasparov. Beryl likes propaganda and doesn't react too bad to how I play the game, but she expands fast and if you don't keep up with her she will take over. Gasparov is entertaining and usually minds his own business but will occasionally just declare war for no reason.

The trick is to be constantly doing missions for the npcs. It gives reputation and good money for the early game. Then you can trade with them to not have to do missions and keep up reputation. Never ally though or they will drag you into stupid wars. Trade is good, though.

In all my recent games, hugo zooms off the the land of lions at breakneck speed. He is there before everyone and it is really immersion breaking. I hate him. At the same time, he helps automate my poo poo, so I need to use him. He heavily favors Ketema over the new world, leaving it ripe for the for beryl. The devs said this is intentional behavior but I think it is silly. I'm not sure what I could do to force him into the new world. He might just focus on land of lions regardless of what the player does.

Gonna start a new game on Tuesday and build them docks.

AIs are really not annoying to have around unless you go with three stars. Like play how you want and all, but more folks to trade with and receive missions from can be nice.

Yeah, 3 stars just want the player to lose and do a good job of helping that along. I've never played too long with them. I tried and it was too brutal. Lady Hunt has the most brutal AI and she uses a bunch of tactics to kill you and sabotage you. Di silva just expands a bunch and has a huge military. Graves is just nuts and will declare war at any time.

I wouldn't mind a season 4 with some new AI opponents. I hope the next anno has AI that dont cheat as much or at all, but I think they have a hard time programming that.

I would have if i knew i could disable them. I swear i clicked on their portraits and what not but it never disabled them like it does with the pirates, so i figured i HAD to play with AIs. Once i read you CAN disable them i had already spent about a month of game time and almost fully colonzed old world/new world. There is no way i was going to replay all that so i decided to continue playing with AI. I am not a warmonger so i didn't really want to blow them up but its infuriating how they could start to colonize in Enbesa seconds after i get the first island, considering how Enbesa docks requires resources only found in Enbesa, so i have had enough of the AIs and am going to build some ships and blow them up.

I have found resource distribution a bit unbalanced.
In the old world i have zero saltpetre, it only exists on 2 islands (out of like 20?) and both are AI starter islands (afaik, its their largest islands). There are copper on other islands, i meant that my islands have 3. The 3 AIs have a grand total of 2!

In the new world i have 2 out of the 2 islands with pearl abundance. Just by chance as i just land grabbed like mad and didn't pay attention to all the resources.

In the Arctic i don't have a single island with seal skins. I grabbed all the big islands, having prepared my ships with trade post building materials so i could immediately go there once it unlocked. I did ignore the itty bitty tiny islands though and it turns out that all the seal abundance is only on those islands.

In Enbesa i almost missed out on lobster, a fairly fundamental resource. It only exists on 3 islands and those 3 islands were the islands the AIs tried to grab seconds after i got the trading post on the NPC island. I accidentally hit decline when one of the AIs asked to settle on the island so they went and settled on another one. Had i clicked yes i would not have had lobster at all. (Kinda weird that neither lobster, indigo or bee's are on the starter island, all 3 are needed to grow the houses)

Saltpeter is only used for heavy weapons, one of the most useless supply chains, so at least you can ditch it almost entirely.

Yeah, sounds like you got screwed by a bad map unfortunately. It sounds like you intentionally let the AI expand, though, which you don't have to do. There are no negative consequences from declining expansion aside from -rep which you can easily counteract with flattery, gifts and quests.

The lack of saltpeter is going to be an issue for making your own battlecruisers but you can just build ships of the line instead, they are arguably better anyway. Ships of the line have more guns but are a lot slower than battlecruisers, so SOTL for harbor bombing and battlecruisers for hunting enemy ships. You can buy saltpeter/heavy weapons for some battlecruisers if you want by setting your harbor(s) to buy it through the trade menu.

I feel a lot of people stuggling with Anno dont take advantage of the items.

Take for example the Actor, shes an inexpensive item that is frequent at the prison and quest rewards. But her benefit is absolutly huge, providing both Rum and Canned Goods to residents in range of a Variety Theatre.

Use the asset viewer people. Look for items that can solve your problems or at least make your life easier. Yes, Chef Michael is one of the best items in the game. But depending on your island, you may not even need him.

Precambrian Video Games

In the late game I frequently get legendary ship items from sinking Anne Harlow's lovely gunboats. Sadly, the last time Chef Michel was available on Eli's I was short of cash.

I can sympathize with people finding playing the item lottery tedious and annoying, considering that it mostly takes time away from the more fun aspects like almost anything else.

Also really annoying: the items that increase the number of modules you can build next to farms (like fertiliser). Yes, they're very good, but if you've already closely packed your fields you have to trash them all and start again (something that would be more tolerable if you could do it while paused and/or just autofill a huge area at once).

Lots of good poo poo here, especially for UI/QoL stuff. Though I think people will especially like this for cosmetics:

Open water buildings and Quay Street
You can now build harbour buildings in open water. To connect them with the land and with each other if needed, we introduced a new quay street. Simply drag a regular street out on the water and it’ll automatically turn into a quay street.

started a new game, I thought the legendary guy from my last game who causes my sowing machine factory to spit out steam engines and heavy weapons was op, but honestly the guy who makes my brick factories produce steel beams while also cutting their manpower usage to 10 is broken in a much more immediate way

yes I could use 400 workers for 1 beam a minute, or I can just skip the whole thing and make more for only 10 workers a pop lmao

Then I set up the docklands to sell my absurd brick surplus in exchange for other poo poo I can use

It's only "broken" at end game when you have every specialist you could ever want pumping out bonus end game items.

For low level its a great way to either get a lot of base materials or just completely ignore an entire production line.

It's an 1800 DLC. Which of these wasn't broken:
-Bright Harvest letting you vomit out fat stacks of farmer-tier products with reduced farmers so you can now upgrade more to workers and beyond?
-Seat of Power letting you create a massive palace that vomits out more and more powerful effects as you go.
-Botanica which is basically an extra zoo/museum but with super-duper powerful effects
-*Waves wildly at Land of Lions* loving everything THIS does?

Of course it's broken, it's an Anno 1800 DLC.

You forgot Crown Falls which trivializes any difficulty setting just by existing.

Anno games aren't designed to be challenging in that way. The people complaining about it don't make sense to me. Maybe you could argue some of the very old games were challenging, but even those games mostly made you sit around and wait rather than providing actual challenge. Anno is good to just kinda chill and build up an insane empire.

There are mods for cosmetic stuff and increasing dock building area. The game has a few mods but I haven't used them much.

As far as getting good items goes, sail to the prison island and check out Eli's inventory. You can hit the dice button to reroll what he has. This becomes very expensive very quickly, so I usually wait until I have a few million coins before I try it. Nothing worse than rolling a couple of times only to get the person I want but then not be able to afford them.
