There is at least one band that used a (modified) procedurally generated image for their album cover. (Realign by Red Vox) Also, Steve Wilson had some deep fakery in his latest music video. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UroVey4fJ_g

A few recent procedural experiments that I've made in Houdini. A logo for a jam band where I play: https://twitter.com/antti_tiihonen/status/1362760940018622464?s=20 Using simulation inspired by Physarum slime mold for terrain generation: https://twitter.com/antti_tiihonen/status/1365257995324706816 I seem to like things that are squiggly!

Oh sweet, that's some really good stuff! I especially like that the band logo has built-in visuals for being displayed on a music video or whatnot, haha.

That slime mold would make for an amazing screensaver, or music visualizer maybe. It's very relaxing to watch it... slime, I guess.

# ? Feb 27, 2021 14:21 |

Is there any way you can hack that logo to become a visualizer? Because it would be amazing to see it pulsate to the beat in real time.

Thanks! I continued to work on the slime mold waterbody/terrain system a little so it’s a bit more, uh, terrainy and varied. https://twitter.com/antti_tiihonen/status/1365643467280568322

Not bad, honestly. That reaches some states that do come across as a pretty believable archipelago... and one that looked uncannily similar to the coast of Great Britain plus Orkney Islands, for some reason. The tendril-y version was more fun to watch, but I could imagine a game using that to generate the layout of its progcen overworld map.

Yeah. I suppose the first one could work for a speedboat racing game or something but with the last one the structure is getting more interesting. Running an erosion sim on a snapshot of that terrain should make the land bits work much better as well but I still wanna play around with the physarum stuff before I start ”cheating” more.

# ? Feb 27, 2021 14:54 |

A speedboat game where the terrain is constantly shifting and changing like the second one where you'd need to gun it to make it through a narrow channel right before the gap closes would be rad.

Heh, I like that idea. It doesn’t sound super tricky to implement either if the simulation is cached ahead of time (for a limited number of sim frames) as a 3d texture or texture array which is then applied to a height map in real time (with interpolation between sim frames). Time travel powerups, like slowdown, rewind or ”future prediction vision” or something should be possible too. If I want to populate the terrain and water with props then it gets more complicated but not impossible I guess. I’ll have to think about this, could be a fun side project.
